His heartbeat accelerated as he ambled toward her. She stretched her arms out just as he neared, and he wrapped his arms around her and pressed her against his chest.
“How long have you been here, my love?” he asked.
She pushed his hat back on his head. “The whole time.” She leaned in and kissed him, but only briefly. “And after listening to what you told Marjorie, I think I love you even more.”
“I meant every word.”
When she kissed him again, it was longer and more passionate. But standing near the cemetery was not the most romantic place to kiss his soon-to-be bride.
He broke the kiss and set her back on her feet before taking her hand in his as they walked away from the church. She leaned her head against his arm.
“Wyatt?”
“Yes, my love?”
“We haven’t talked about where we are going to live after we’re married.”
“No, we haven’t. I suppose we should discuss that now. What are your thoughts?”
“Well, I’d thought about staying here in Topeka and continuing to work at the hotel, but then I realized that one of these days I want to have your children, and that would definitely be difficult while I’m working.”
He chuckled and squeezed her hand lightly. “You’re wise to think that way.”
“And because you’re a Texas Ranger, you’ll probably want to return to that state.”
“Yes. I do enjoy working as a Texas Ranger.”
“And...” She stopped and gazed up at him with her luminous blue eyes. “I’ve never been to Texas, and I want people to think of me as Ranger Donovan’s wife instead of Dr. Allen’s crazy daughter.”
He cupped her face, stroking her skin with his thumb. “I don’t want people to think of you as crazy, either, however...” He moved closer and wrapped his arms around her. “I hope you never stop inventing your gadgets. You’re going to make that cart perfect and we can sell it to all the hotels in Texas. One of these days, you are going to make us rich.” He waggled his eyebrows. “And I don’t know about you, but that sounds really pleasing right now, especially since we’re going to have a house full of children.”
She laughed and threw her arms around his neck. “Thank you, Wyatt. I love you for loving me enough to accept my interest in making gadgets. And I will make you proud one day.”
He shook his head. “You already have. I’m looking forward to our journey through married life. We work well together, I think.”
“Yes, we do.”
“Oh, and I forgot to tell you.” He dropped a kiss on her cheek. “Your brother told me this morning that he’s decided to become a doctor.”
Her eyes widened. “He is? Why?”
“Because finding a way to rid your body of the poison made him feel as though he accomplished something in his life. It made him feel good to help another person. And,” he bent and rubbed his nose with hers, “I think James and Mary will get married and move to Texas with us.”
Gasping, Josie pulled back. “What about Ma?”
“I suppose she’ll have to come with us, but only if she wants.”
Laughing, Josie cuddled next to him, fitting herself very comfortably in his arms. “Is it any wonder I love you so much? You truly are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“Indeed, my love.” He kissed the top of her head. “We are a match made in Heaven.”
