Cassie closed the door silently and crept back to bed, stung. She cursed into her pillow, hitting it with her fists. She cried. And when at last she was all cried out, she turned off the light and pulled up the covers. Why hadn”t Roy come up? Didn”t he want to be with her anymore?

Was he punishing her by ignoring her? Cassie tossed and turned, miserable and alone.

It was just after dawn when she woke with a start. Roy was sitting in the chair by her bed.

It looked like he had been there a long time. He had been, watching Cassie sleep.

  “Morning, baby girl.”

  “Morning, Daddy.”

She had tried to say it nicely, but all her hurt and resentment broke through.

“Why didn”t you come up last night? How could you watch a ball game at a time like this?” she accused with a huge sob.

“I needed some time, Cassie. I used that time to give our situation a lot of thought.” Cassie”s chest hurt and her stomach ached. Here it comes, she thought, tears welling up in her eyes.

“Having you gone during the week isn”t working for me, Cassie. I want you to come live with me here. I want you to move out of the dorm and make this your home. Your real home.” Cassie was stunned.

  “But what about school?”

“You will still go to school. I want you to get your degree, and I want you to become a doctor, if that”s what you want.”

“But what about..you know? Will I still be your little girl?”

“You”ll always be my little girl, Cassie. I may have to make some adjustments in how I manage things, given that you will have adult responsibilities to fulfill from here, but it won”t change our fundamental relationship.”

Cassie thought about that, trying to imagine how she could be a little girl and a pre-med student at the same time.

“Will I have a choice about when I”m Cassie the little girl and when I”m Cassandra Stevens the grown up?”

  “Do you want a choice?”

  Cassie fell silent.

“I didn”t think so,” Roy said.

“Listen to me, Cassie. I will always be the daddy. I will always be in charge. If I exercise restraint in how and when I exert my authority, we will both still know that I can always, should I chose, bend you to my will and make you do as I say.

“That knowledge will fulfill me and give me joy, even when you”re away at school being independent. And it will support you and shelter you when you are away from me. I want our relationship to be your safe haven, Cassie. Always.”

Cassie”s insides ached with love, and when Roy opened his arms to her, Cassie slipped out of bed and ran to the chair, sinking gratefully against his chest.

“So what do you say, baby girl? Shall we move you out of the dorm tomorrow?” Cassie smiled, pressing her face into Roy”s soft shirt. “Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, please…Daddy.”

“Good, sweetie. I”m so glad,” he said, rocking her in his arms. “Welcome home, Cassie girl. Welcome home.”
