Cats Aloft

Page 15

by Lisa Martin

This made Cecil pull up short. He looked at the moon again, which was bright and full overhead. “I hear the moon is made of green cheese,” he said. “Maybe we could go up there and check it out. We’d have to fly.”

Kitty nodded. “I’ve been thinking that instead of catching fish from the top of the water we should find a way to go down to the bottom, since that’s obviously where they all live.”

“In some kind of underwater boat?” Cecil asked.

“It would have to be sealed up tight.”

Cecil laughed. As they turned away from the sea toward the town, Anton met them along the path.

“What a fine night,” said Anton as he joined his brother and their friend.

“A fine night to be home,” agreed Cecil.

And under the bright moon, the three cats walked toward the town discussing how wide the world was, how varied and fabulous, and how someday they might see more of it.

  Acknowledgments

Once again, our thanks are due to our editor Elise Howard and our agent Molly Friedrich, the first and best fans of Anton and Cecil. We’re also grateful to Sarah Alpert and everyone at Algonquin Young Readers for their conscientious shepherding of the cat brothers as they continue their feline adventures.

Kelly Murphy’s illustrations have been consistently delightful, inventive, and true to the stories. We very much appreciate her whole-hearted engagement in the cats’ point of view.

And finally, we thank the readers of these books, some of whom we’ve been lucky enough to meet in person at their schools and local bookstores, for their imagination, questions, and boundless enthusiasm for the peregrinations of Anton and Cecil.
