The elevator slowly dropped down as the Professor’s heart went up into his throat. He plastered himself to a back corner of the elevator as the doors opened in the basement. A huge mob of creatures turned at the sound of the elevator doors. He reached out quickly and pressed the button for the first floor, and tapped the “Close Door” button repeatedly. A moan sounded as one of the creatures shambled toward him. The door closed and the elevator began to move up. The Professor let out a breath, then sucked it in again as the door opened to the first floor.

This time the area around the elevators was clear of creatures – they’d probably all headed outside to engage the aliens. He pulled his gear out of the elevator, put on his backpack and put a chair between the doors. “Wouldn’t do to have a zombie press the right buttons, now would it?” he thought to himself.

He shouldered the RPG launcher and picked up two extra rockets, then hefted his AK-47 and walked slowly toward the front door of the apartments. He could see that it was bashed in, open, and he could see the mob of creatures walking in the street out front. He snuck up to the door and looked out as the line of zombies was hit by one of the alien weapons. It blew several heads completely apart, and a bunch of others were hit hard enough to drop. After a few minutes of the alien weapons tearing through the zombies, the aliens themselves appeared, walking between and on top of the bodies. There were three of them, plus one behind them barking orders. Probably. It held the small gun, and the Professor suspected it was the one he’d shot earlier. As they passed, he dropped the AK on its sling and pulled out the RPG launcher. He walked out of the apartment and slowly into the street. He backed toward the square and the alien ship, aiming the RPG at the backs of the aliens and looking over his shoulder to see if any others were around.

His heart seemed to stop as he saw the alien leader look back.
