  BOOK LIST

It is an unfortunate and only slowly-changing fact that most SF books look alike. Cover art, blurbs, jacket copy—they are likely to be similar whether the book is the worst novel of the decade or a Hugo-and-Nebula-winning classic. This makes it difficult for a bookstore browser with no systematic knowledge of SF to make an intelligent selection. Most SF books, with their garish covers and lurid blurbs, look like sophomoric junk of the worst sort, and, indeed, a good percentage is sophomoric junk. How then tell the good from the bad? The browser needs to know which authors are generally considered superior, and which titles represent their best work. It’s possible that SF is more name-oriented than any other kind of literature. Authors’ names and book titles are of supreme importance in determining which SF book to buy. Often there simply are not other reliable criteria.

This listing is not intended to be exhaustive. A trip to any large paperback bookstore will demonstrate that most of the authors listed have more titles to their credit than those included here and that many authors, not necessarily inferior ones, are not included at all. The listing must not be considered a rundown of all the worthwhile SF ever published. Such a list, if it were possible to compile at all, would be a book in itself.

The list below is intended to aid you in building a basic SF library of some depth, scope, and variety, and to help you acquire the beginnings of an intelligent overview of a complex field. Although none of the books listed here is a failure on its own terms, there are some that I dislike, and some that you will dislike as well. But it is extremely unlikely that our tastes will agree exactly, if they coincide at all. Only by including a wide range of SF can one hint at the incredible diversity and richness of the field.

As a rule, I have not included fantasy, except fantasy by a major SF author or a book that has had a wide impact on the field. Neither have I included sword-and-sorcery, horror, or occult titles, or series such as Perry Rhodan, Cap Kennedy, or Doc Savage. One must draw the line somewhere, and many bookstores now shelve each of these types separately. I have not listed the classics—books by H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, or Olaf Stapledon. These books are listed in many dozens, if not hundreds, of college textbooks and anthologies aimed at the school market and are taught in so many SF courses that it would be redundant to list them here. They are readily available in the bookstores and libraries of all but the smallest hamlets and are therefore the books most likely familiar to the SF novice. For similar reasons, I have not listed the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, or the four-foot shelf of Edgar Rice Burroughs titles. All these gentlemen have been “discovered” by the literary establishment and do not need to be called to the attention of the general reading public. Their books are readily available even in bookstores that do not otherwise carry much SF.

The listing below also has a built-in bias toward the SF of the last forty years, particularly that of the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Most SF prior to the so-called Golden Age (the late thirties and forties)—and even some fifties SF—is long out-of-print or available only in very high-priced editions aimed at collectors and libraries.

There are signs that this situation is changing, however. Ballantine, Avon, and Ace have been particularly active in recent years in reissuing out-of-print books. As a result, there are many books on the paperback racks today that have not been available for a decade or more. There are recent editions, for instance, of once-rare hooks by Dick, Piper, Pangborn, Kornbluth, Leiber, Vance, and many others. My advice is to buy them before they go out of print again, especially if you are trying to collect the complete works of certain authors.

When I have listed out-of-print books, they are usually titles that you are still fairly likely to come across in used paperback bookstores, SF bookstores, huckster rooms at SF conventions, or in most libraries.

Although some hardcover books are mentioned, the listing includes mostly paperback books currently in print. Throughout, the most recent paperback edition is given.

Single-author short-story collections are indicated by (ss).

Omissions are the result either of oversight or prejudice. I apologize for both but cannot do much about either.
