Ten Days

In spite of my still-pained lungs, my body’s aching throb with each beat of my heart, I couldn’t keep my eyes open and fell into a quick sleep.
The air was much cooler, the sky nearly black with a full, glowing moon above when I finally stirred to consciousness. I slitted my eyes open, jerking back and banging the back of my head against a tree when I saw them.
Eyes. Dozens of eyes, set in narrow, tanned faces with moon-kissed hair streaming in the breeze.
All of those eyes looking down at us.
I swallowed, nudged Marshal’s side. He groaned and blinked a couple of times with sleep-hazed eyes then sucked in a quick breath when he saw the people. Without a word he reached across Hanson’s lap for my hand.
One older woman with thick black hair stood in front of the crowd. Her lips were thin but there was no anger in the way they were set. Her eyes were filled with curiosity. Then she smiled, raised one eyebrow and tilted her head to study me.
And in that moment, I knew the real truth.
We were not alone.
