Three of the Rolls-Royce state cars, c1960

The Duke has owned a black cab – a Metrocab converted to run on liquefied petroleum gas – for many years and uses it for incognito trips around London. The latest car, a 2002 Bentley, was presented to The Queen to mark her Golden Jubilee. It was specially made a metre longer than normal and with a clear Perspex roof that gives an uninterrupted view of royal passengers. The oldest car is a 1950 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV originally purchased by Princess Elizabeth but still in use today. It is particularly favoured by The Prince of Wales. There are several other features unique to The Queen’s state cars: a solid silver radiator mascot depicting St George slaying the dragon can be swapped between cars; they fly a small Royal Standard and display a shield bearing the royal coat of arms; and they carry no number plates. For her personal use The Queen uses a dark green Bentley Mulsanne, an armoured Jaguar XJ and a number of other cars. There are eight chauffeurs in attendance, all part of the Crown Equerry’s staff.

Over 40 members of staff are employed at the Royal Mews. Not only is it a working mews, with horses being groomed, fed, schooled and exercised daily, carriages and harnesses being cleaned and repaired, and cars being kept in immaculate condition, it is also an enormously popular visitor attraction open on most days throughout the year. Few come away unimpressed by the high standard of workmanship and maintenance of the finest collection of carriages in the world. The horses, the limousines and the immaculate turnout of the staff all contribute to the impressive style that is so much a part of monarchy. The length of service of many of the employees in the Mews demonstrates a great pride in their work and a degree of job satisfaction hard to find elsewhere.
