  Smiling, he continued on along the landing. She was an interesting kid; he could see why his father might have asked them to live up at the house. And she called him Gil, not Mr Cardrew. Not much awe there. Gil would probably like that.

  As he reached the bathroom, someone whispered softly behind him, ‘Lawrence?’ He thought he knew the voice.
