  Epilogue

They stood before the gateway, thousands of demons in military formation stretching nearly to the city limits. Heat shimmered off the sand, but no one moved as much as a claw. A figure walked through the ranks to stand in front of the gateway. He reached out to touch the narrow strip of light. It expanded, opened, and on the other side was a city with human vehicles driving by, pedestrians on their way to work, and an angel who gasped when he saw what was about to step through the gates from Hel.

The figure turned to the rows of demons. He was beautiful, in a tanned, muscular human form with gladiator-style armor that didn’t hide the enormous scar extending from under his right arm down to his left hip. No helm covered his white-blond hair. His crystal-blue eyes flashed as he surveyed his army. Wings spread from his back—huge wings of leather with sparse, glossy black feathers.

“Advance.” The baritone voice rolled across the landscape and in response to the command, the demons moved, following the Ancient through the gateway and into the human world.

  Acknowledgments

A huge thanks to my copyeditors Kimberly Cannon and Jennifer Cosham whose eagle eyes catch all my typos and keep my comma problem in line, and to Damonza, for cover design.

Most of all, thanks to my children, who have suffered many nights of microwaved chicken nuggets and take-out pizza so that Mommy can follow her dream.

  About the Author

Debra lives in a little house in the woods of Maryland with her sons and two slobbery bloodhounds. On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground. Her only known super power is 'Identify Roadkill'.
