No Room In Hell (Book 2): 400 Miles To Graceland
Page 37
Kaleb skids across the pavement, not reaching the newly formed hole.
Undead shamble from both ends of the bridge. Their moan-howls attract more brethren.
Ethan scoops up his M&P. He raises the weapon. Kaleb smiles at him and rolls into the hole. Ethan hears the splash before he reaches the cavity. In his mind, Kaleb must have relished depriving Ethan of a kill as he fell to his death. He had seconds to consider his choice.
Ethan cradles Becky in his arms. With her one eye, she gives him the glance of a loving daughter. Tears cover Ethan’s cheek. Even in a restored world with full medical facilities he doubts they could repair her broken body.
Before the moan-howls drown her words, Becky speaks through broken teeth and shattered jaw. “End…me—”
It’s all he can do for her. No more pain. Not allowing her to turn. The bullet bounces around in her brain pan ensuring no reanimation.
Ethan checks the clip.
Twelve.
And one in the pipe.
Marching up both sides of the Hernando de Soto Bridge are more biters than he cares to count. They are a thinner group on the Arkansas side of the river, but even if it is the necessary direction he needs to travel there are more undead then even he’ll be able to kill.
He slips a second full clip from his belt, placing it in his mouth, then grips the third full clip in his left hand ready to replace the first once he empties it.
