“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good. Now, before you say you’ll marry me, I want to be honest.”
He nodded.
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I can’t have children, Jeff. I’m sorry,” she said softly, battling back tears. “I was told that in my twenties. So, if your desire is to have a big family, I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere.”
“That’s not a problem for me.”
She looked into his eyes, seeing only sincerity there. “You sure?”
He bent down and looked at her. “I’m positive. But is it okay with you? Because you know, today, there are so many new fertility methods out there that almost anyone can conceive.”
“I don’t want to be disappointed if it doesn’t work.”
“Okay. I can understand that. What about adopting?”
“Maybe. One day. To be honest, I’m happy with just you, my job at the bank, my position on the Council, Sunday School, and helping out the veterans.”
He whistled. “Wow, when you read it off like that, you sound pretty busy.” He pulled her into his arms. “You sure you have time for me?”
She smiled. “I’ll always make sure we have time for each other.”
He grinned. “Then okay, I’ll marry you.”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “I wasn’t proposing. I was just asking a question.”
“When the question is will you marry me, that’s a proposal.”
“But, I...I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know, but I accept anyway.”
Biting her lip to hold back a grin, she turned toward the bed before looking over her shoulder at him. “Good, because I wouldn’t be sleeping in this bed otherwise.”
“What?”
“I’m not sleeping with you again without you promising to marry me. What kind of girl do you think I am?”
He jumped on the bed, laughing. “The right kind.”
