“Alex?” Ellie said on a whisper. He nodded and she saw wetness in his eyes. She threw herself into his arms. They stayed that way for a while. When she pulled back, she saw Cade wipe his eye quickly and then cleared his throat.
“What are you doing here, how?” She said looking to Cade.
“I did a search and found him. He’s been in the military Ellie. He never joined the missionaries.” Cade said smiling at her.
“I can’t believe it. Why didn’t you come home?” Ellie asked. They moved into the kitchen and Cade moved next to her and draped an arm over her shoulder and pulled her close. Alex leaned against the counter. His dark raven hair matched her own and his emerald green eyes sparkled.
“I didn’t think I could. Dad told me about Leslie and I just…I had to stay away. Cade told me everything. I have a daughter.” He said with a hitch in his voice. She nodded.
“Yes, her grandparents are in a lot of trouble. She is 23 but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t need a father figure. It will take a lot to explain it to her but she has family.” Ellie said. Her brother nodded.
“Will you help me?” Alex asked. Ellie nodded.
“You know I will.” She said hugging him again. Cade stepped up to both of them.
“Your brother has agreed to be my Chief Deputy. I need someone with a military background who can get the deputies in line.” Cade smiled. He leaned down and kissed her surprised expression.
“That’s great Alex. Where are you staying?” Ellie asked. Alex turned and headed for the door.
“At the Cabinn. Allison made a room up for me and I have my eye on a nerdy doctor in town. I met her at the coffee shop and she said she’s the Chief Medical Examiner.” Alex stated, waggling his eyes. Ellie looked at Cade in surprise.
“Seriously, I mean…she’s awesome, you like Megan?” Ellie said softly, smiling at her brother. He nodded and blushed.
“It’s good to be home. I’m sorry about everything that you went through. I’m here now and you have Cade. No one will ever hurt you again Nora, I promise.” He said. He kissed her cheek and pulled back. He held out his hand to Cade.
“Thanks for taking care of my sister. She’s in good hands Sheriff.” Alex said. “But if you hurt her, we are going to have a problem.” Alex stated glaring at Cade. Cade nodded and smiled.
“Good to know.” They shook hands and Alex left. As soon as he was in his car, Cade had Ellie backed up against the door.
“I miss you. Wait up for me?” He asked with pleading eyes. His hands roamed all over her.
“mmhmm…I have a pair of handcuffs with your name on them Sheriff.” She said teasingly. She tugged him back down to her as he took her mouth and she sighed, knowing she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
