“Just think, John, we’re going to be grandfathers soon. I’m looking forward to it.” Carl grinned from ear to ear.

“A grandfather. Hell, I’ve been waiting for this for years. And I think it might be wise to pray that the child inherits your side of the family. One stubborn, mule-headed person in a family is enough,” John joked.

“Now, I know you don’t mean that. Kai is the joy of your life,” Carl answered and saw his friend grinning.

They both knew, though, that even if the child turned out to be obstinate and mule-headed like Kai, they would both love the child.

  Chapter Thirty

Kai rose to her feet, a disgruntled look on her face now that the waves of sickness past. Seeing the wide grin on his face, she shot River a belligerent glare. “And what do you find so amusing, Mister?”

At hearing her waspish tone and seeing the filthy look she threw at him, River quickly stopped smiling. “Ah, nothing, honey.” Her mood swings these days went from volatile to weeping, and her constant vomiting didn’t help her disposition, either.

After rinsing out her mouth, Kai threw on her clothes. “I’m getting sick to death of vomiting all the time.” Anger hissed through her words.

River grimaced at the pain rippling through his chest as he swung his legs over the side of his bed. He bent over, swept up his clothing from the floor and started to dress. “It won’t be for too much longer darlin’.”

With a sniff, Kai pulled the brush through her hair. “Oh, says the wise almighty.”

His eyes rolling, River held his laughter inside as he pulled on his pants and did them up.

“I have a good mind not to marry you,” Kai grumbled.

Those mumbled words bought River’s head around. Shoving his arms into the sleeves of his shirt, he glared at her. “Now, you listen to me, woman, we’re getting married next week, and you are not going to change your mind. You belong to me, and so does the baby you carry.”

Kai, hearing the fear in River’s voice, quickly moved over to him. Brushing his hands aside, she did up the buttons on his shirt. Before she could reassure him, the bedroom door flew open, and she groaned when she saw both their fathers standing in the doorway with shotguns cradled in their arms.

River looked toward the open door and softly mumbled a few choice words. Hell, this was all he needed, two irate fathers. Determined looking ones, at that, he grumbled to himself. He turned his gaze to Kai and saw the horror on her face. He could see she’d guessed their intention.

“Come along, you two. It’s about time you made an honest man of my son, missy,” Carl growled and tried to keep from smiling.

“Now, just a minute, Carl. Don’t you think it’s the other way around, and it’s your son that should be making an honest woman of my sweet daughter?” John turned to his friend in mock anger.

“Mmm. We’re both right. They both need to make an honest person out of each other.”

River sniggered over the carrying on of their fathers, but stopped when Kai pinched him. He hastily cleared his throat.

“Ah, Dad, you don’t think to walk us through town brandishing those things, do you?” Kai asked her father worriedly. When she saw both men nod, she turned to River. “For God’s sake, do something, you fool,” she hissed out and turned back to their fathers with mounting concern.

When noticing the rising fear in Kai’s eyes, River shifted his gaze back to their fathers. “Ah, there’s no need to go to such extremes. Kai and I will be getting married next week.”

John snorted. “That may well be, but you’re still getting married today.”

“Yes, there’s been enough hanky-panky going on under this roof, and there will be no more of it until you’re married. Now come along,” Carl said as he brandished the shotgun.

Heat of embarrassment warmed his cheeks and, knowing when he was beaten, River shrugged when Kai looked at him. “Come on, sweetheart, it looks as though we don’t have much choice.”

Even though she might want to protest, Kai could see she didn’t have any other option. So with her eyes shining brightly with anger and her chin notched in the air, she let River lead her out the room.

As they ambled down the street, River could see everyone looking at them and grinning. It didn’t bother him in the slightest that they all knew what was happening. He could feel Kai moving stiffly by his side, blowing out an aggravated breath. He hoped Kai wouldn’t balk at the last minute.

“It doesn’t surprise me it’s a shotgun wedding.” Maryanne’s voice carried to the pair being forced down the street by both their fathers carrying rifles.

Kai stopped and turned a blazing gaze to the annoying woman. “Well, at least—”

River slapped his hand over Kai’s mouth and bent down to whisper harshly in her ear. “No need to affirm her jealous suspicion, sweetheart.” When he saw that she would keep her mouth shut, he removed his hand and, taking her arm, continued walking down the street.

“No need for me to do that. Our fathers are doing a very nice job of it for us.” She turned to look behind her and groaned at seeing not only their fathers but what looked like most of the town following. “Oh, Lord, we’ll never live this down.”

The sound of shame carried in Kai’s words. River swung his head around and turned forward, chuckling. Letting go of Kai’s hand, he slipped his arm around her waist. “They would know the truth anyway, sweetheart, when the baby arrives.”

“I suppose you’re right,” she said miserably.

River lightly squeezed her waist. “Buck up, honey. Just think, after we’re married, we can play doctors and nurses to our hearts’ content.”

“Humph, that’s what got us in to this mess in the first place,” Kai grumbled but laughed softly.

“And if I’m not mistaken, it’s my turn to play doctor,” he whispered close to her ear, his voice husky with desire.

Her insides quivering, Kai hoped the ceremony wouldn’t take long. Already she started to feel hot and needy.

“You’re looking flushed, honey. Can I take it as a sign that you’re looking forward to your examination?” River could feel his own body reacting, but he couldn’t help teasing her.

Kai gulped in a breath and sighed with relief when they finally reached the church. “You know, I heard that once people are married their desire for each other dies.” Her tone tinged with seriousness, she almost laughed at the scowl that came on River’s face.

All humor vanishing, River frowned. He could only wonder if she might be serious about her desire for him disappear after they were married. But when he noticed the bright twinkling in her eyes he grinned. “Well, I reckon, honey, that with us it will never die. I don’t think a day will ever go by that I won’t want you. Now, come on, let’s get this over and done with, and then I can race you home to bed and examine you.”

His statement went straight to her heart, and without another word Kai didn’t hesitate letting him lead her inside the church and down the aisle to stand in front of the reverend.

  Epilogue

Lying on the bed with delirious pleasure swimming through her, Kai cried out as River’s wicked tongue drove her to the brink of madness. Her hips arched as his tongue swiped at the sensitive spot between her thighs.

His tongue curling around her clitoris, River sucked it gently between his teeth. When her body start to tense, he lifted away and slipped up over her. His mouth captured hers in a wild, hot kiss as he slid inside her. Breaking the kiss, he moved up on his elbows and, tossing his head back, he repeatedly pumped himself inside her eager, welcoming body.

“Oh, River, please, please,” Kai whimpered as she strained to find her release.

His breathing harsh, River dropped his head, his mouth hovering just above hers. “Let go, honey. Let go and come with me.” His ragged voice drifted around them. He took her mouth in a searing kiss as he drove himself into her, and a growl rumbled in his chest as they rode the waves of rapture together.

  Kai could feel her
self shimmering as ecstasy rushed through her. Her arms and legs tightened around him until he dropped lightly on her. Her legs slipped down and fell on each side of him. Her hands moved up his damp back and over his shoulders. She suddenly stiffened when she caught his ragged whispered words against the side of her neck.

When he felt Kai go rigid beneath him, all the wonderful emotions inside him vanished. With concern, he lifted away and gazed down at her.

Tears filled her eyes as River stared down at her in panic. She lifted her hand and cupped his cheek. “I thought you only adored me like a puppy.”

The concern vanishing, River laughed. “Ah, honey, I have always loved and adored you. And, believe me, it is far from anything I would ever feel for a puppy.”

Her laughter fell softly between them. “I love you, too, River, and always have.”

His mouth brushed over hers, and he turned serious. “I know, honey. I know, and later you can really prove it to me by examining me, but for now I’ll make do with this.” His mouth claimed hers in a passionate kiss as his heart filled with happiness.

Kai moaned into his mouth as he started to move gently inside her. Knowing that River loved her made her truly happy, and now she didn’t have any doubts about marrying him. She promised herself she would give him a most thorough examination a little later. Now though, she just wanted to lose herself in the pleasure sweeping her away.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I became interested in writing quite some time ago and have been playing around with stories over the years. Trying to be a published author took some time, but I never stopped trying or gave up hope, and now I’m lucky to have several books published. Two of which are now in paperback.

I love reading, and the first author I ever read was Wilbur Smith (When The Lion Feeds). Since then I have never stopped. I still read him and others like James Patterson, Karen Slaughter. However, I love my romance novels, such authors as Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Leigh Greenwood, Rosemary Rogers, Connie Mason and too many more to name.

My husband, children, family and friends have all been very supportive and are very proud of my accomplishments. Now I am about to start a new chapter in my life, very exciting and hopefully inspiring. For the next year or two my husband and I will be leaving our property just out of Perth Western Australia and living in Penang, Malaysia. I hope that the exotic surrounding will inspire me even more.
