But as her limp body collapsed into his arms the reality of what had happened to her - what he could have prevented happening - was imprinted into Edge’s mind. He had ridden off and left her, the safe hiding place becoming a stifling trap. Her fingers, cleaned of flesh, showed how she had struggled. Her features, contorted by agony, revealed her futile fight for life against the assault of stale air. Then, as her head lolled forward, the stench of the long dead erupted from her gaping mouth. A cluster of writhing maggots fell from her half-eaten lips.
