  “Oh, God no….Celeste…no.”

Her presence shines as a globe of brilliant light, her laugh tinkling. She is determined to show me this - reaching out to take my hand. Then suddenly we fall down a shute…a tunnel…plummeting into somewhere horrible, cold, dark and wet. There’s a bad feeling in here…full of anguish, confusion and fear…and so much rage…

Below, the icy chill of stagnant water awaits, the drip-drip-drip of moss-coated stones all around us. Down and down… oh no, plunging into freezing water…it closes over my head, pressure swelling inside my lungs…bursting…silently screaming with fear and pain…something sharp cutting into the palm of my hand. I’m drowning…lungs heaving against my chest wall…exploding…

Suddenly a face swims into mine - eye whites bulging, long, black hair floating all around a bloated, mottled corpse…but there is light. All around, in these murky depths there is light. Celeste is here…she wants me to see…The girl’s hand is unfurling. She is showing me something…a bottle…

Oh, it’s gone black. No…I cannot breathe...I’m going to die…No…

“No, no, I want to live. Let me up, I want to live–”

“Ruby, you’re okay. You’re doing well. Spit the tube out, that’s it. It’s all over. Back in the land of the living, there we go–”

I blink. Unsure. “Where is Celeste?”

  Remember to tell….

  “Yes, yes…”

When I wake again it is into a room lit as starkly as an operating theatre. I have no idea where I am or what time of day it is.

  “Hello, Ruby?”

A woman is standing over me with an armful of flowers. “We brought these for you.”

She floats before me… She has a nice smile in a plump face, her hair tied back. My heart leaps. “Becky?”

She nods. “How are you doing?”

“I know where it is.” These are my first words to her.

  She shakes her head.

“I’ve seen it. I was there. There’s a glass bottle in the well. Tell Harry to break it. That’s what I have been shown. I’m told to tell Harry? Do you know a Harry?”

Her eyes glint and I see she understands whatever the hell it is I’m talking about.

“You’re off the respirator, that’s good. Do you want some water?”

  “Yes. But the message…do you–?”

She nods and strokes my forehead. “Yes, I understand and yes there is a Harry, and yes I will tell him what we need to do. You are amazing.” She has tears in her eyes even though she is smiling. “Don’t worry, Ruby. Anyway, I have someone special here to see you.”

I notice then, the small girl she has with her.

We lock eyes, this child and I. I’ve seen her before, many, many times… In my dreams, in my madness, in my despair and in my fears. She has gazed through her window at the same stars; and she has seen me too.

She doesn’t hesitate. Alice puts her arms around my neck and cries.

  My girl.
