He had a funny feeling. Jake’s face was the tipoff. If Danny was wrong, then so be it; the deputy would never know how close a call this was. But if Danny was right, if Jake had figured it out and was coming after him, he wasn’t going to jail. No way.
“Hey, Jake,” Danny said. Big smile. His hand slinked under the counter, feeling for the chilly steel. “What’s going on?”
