The Time Telephone

“About time.”
She chuckled.
“But before you tie the knot, there’s one unfinished piece of business we need to take care of.”
“Oh?”
“It’s about Mom.”
She sat down in the rocker.
“I think we should have her body cremated and then we should scatter her ashes somewhere,” I said.
She cocked her head thoughtfully.
“It just doesn’t suit her personality at all lying in that graveyard,” I said. “No offense.”
She sighed deeply.
“You’re right. It’s not what she would’ve wanted.” She nodded slowly. “I guess I thought having her buried nearby might finally bring her home where we both wanted her. But it doesn’t, does it?”
“Nope.”
She smiled slightly.
“So, where do you have in mind?”
“I thought we could drive down to Tybee Island. We can walk out on the pier and scatter her ashes in the waves. She can travel the world to her heart’s content – swimming with the fishes, floating with the currents.”
“That’s very poetic, Megan.”
*
I stand on the boardwalk, surf crashing below
On a warm sunny day in May
I remember her smile and the hugs she gave me
The most treasured presents of all
I empty the urn, the dust flies on the breeze
She floats, then touches the ocean
I smile when I think of her traveling the seas
Freeing her - toodle-oo - freeing me
The End
