Unfortunately, Detective Brogan wouldn’t be so lucky.

Leaning over Jolie, he placed his lips to hers to breathe life into her body. All the while, keeping his hands pressed around her throat to keep the blood from spraying around the room.

When Jolie’s eyes snapped open, she hissed at the pain. Her hands went over Jacques, and she stared at him in confusion. Her senses were being overwhelmed by the smell of blood.

“Jacques?” she rasped. Her throat was too damaged to ask more.

“Mon amour, we were attacked. Flynn saved us, and now we need to save him. I fear he’s slipping away from us.”

Jolie grabbed a towel that Chloe was holding out to her, and she braced it over the gash. In Jacques’s mind, she begged for blood.

Immediately, he handed her his wrist without hesitating. Biting into his flesh, she drank deeply. When she couldn’t take in anymore, she lifted the detective’s wrist and did the same thing, only drinking enough from him to start the process of binding him forever.

When she had finished, Jacques had a silver knife in his hand. Holding out her wrist, he made a small wound for her to feed their human.

Jolie reached into the darkest recesses of his mind, hoping it wasn’t too late.

“Flynn, you need to swallow. Please do it for me. We don’t have much time.”

“I’m too tired, Jolie. I just need to sleep for a little while.”

“NO! I command you to drink. If you don’t listen to me, you’ll be dead. You’re slipping away. I need you to swallow what’s in your mouth, and keep drinking.” Jolie relaxed marginally, as he began to do as she asked.

At least he was fighting, and she would do the same to keep him there.

“Am I going to die?” he asked, in both their minds, as fear coated his words.

“No, we’re binding you to us so you’ll live.”

  “Will I be a vampyre?”

“No, you watch too much TV, Flynn. It is not the same. We’ll explain later. For now, you must sleep beside me. Let go, and we’ll be here when you wake.”

  “I’m afraid,” he admitted.

“Flynn, I won’t let you be hurt anymore. I promise. I need your trust.”

“Whatever you say, Jolie. Are you hurt? I tried to stop them. I’m sorry, Jacques. I was almost too late.” Then, his mind let go, and he fell into a haze, going deeper into the blackest sleep that he had ever felt in his forty years of life.

“Jolie, you need to call death and sleep too. You need to heal.”

“Jacques, he saved me. I would have been decapitated.”

“I know, my love. He saved me too. We owe our detective everything. Now, Jolie, please call death. I’ll watch over you and Flynn,” he promised, helping her lay back on the blood covered bedding.

Jolie immediately curled into Brogan, pulling him to her body as she protectively laid against him. When she closed her eyes, she sent an apology to the man beside her.

She had no choice, and now he was tied to them.

  “What’s happening?”

“I’m dying, and you’re coming with me to heal, Flynn. We must in order to live.” Jolie could feel his panic, and then the calm of death take over his body.

  With that, she followed.

Jacques waited for his mate to slip into death before he howled in a ferocious rage. Chloe stayed in the corner as far from him as possible. Stalking towards her, he fought to remain in control. “How did they get into the house?” he bellowed.

“I don’t know, Master! I’m the only one awake. I didn’t invite them in to our home.” Her eyes flickered with fear and something more.

“Then, they have been here before. It had to be someone who was here last night. These vampyres were invited into our home!”

“I didn’t see anyone, Jacques. I was in the kitchen cleaning up the dishes. I had just brought the detective his breakfast and returned back downstairs.”

  “I’ll kill whoever did this.”

“Yes, Jacques.” The girl stared at the floor.

He knew it wasn’t her fault. Chloe would never betray them. They had been through too much together for that to ever happen.

“I’m not mad at you, Chloe. Your quick thinking saved all of us. If you didn’t wake me, I don’t think the detective would have made it, and the last vampyre would have finished his job.”

  Chloe nodded.

“Please wake Balzac and get him in here. We need to get rid of these filthy animals.”

“How did the detective kill two of your kind?”

“We’re lucky it’s daytime, and they’re weakened, or the slash to Jolie’s neck would have decapitated her. Detective Brogan has excellent aim.”

When Chloe left to do his bidding, he checked on Jolie and Flynn. He could feel a small flutter of a soul in Brogan’s body, preparing to divide itself for the people he was going to be tied to for all eternity.

Yes, he was still alive, just held in a catatonic state. He used his mind to reach into Jolie’s prone form and was pleased to feel her body beginning to heal itself. Soon, she would be sharing her portion of Brogan’s soul. As he closed his eyes, he searched inside himself, and there too was a small flutter.

They were all starting to be connected together. Over the next few hours, they would be forever linked. Soon, Brogan would be half in his world and half in theirs.

He hoped they didn't damn him for all eternity.

“Jacques? What happened?” asked Balzac, running into the room, as he looked around at the carnage. Then, he saw his mistress and the human police officer beside her, curled together in death and sleep.

  He couldn’t believe his eyes.

There was blood on the sheets, carpets, and on Jacques.

“We were attacked while we were dead. We’re going to have to start sleeping in shifts. Someone was here in the house, inviting these animals in to kill us while we slept.”

“Mon Dieu, Jacques! How bad is she?” he asked, looking down at Jolie.

“If it was night, or if the one who hurt her was a stronger vampyre, she would be dead and so would I. They were planning to kill everyone in the society.” He stared down at Flynn. “Our human saved her, and Chloe woke me. Without the detective, we wouldn’t have risen again.”

“He has been bonded to you both?” asked Balzac, staring at the lifeless man lying on the bed.

“We had to save him and had no choice.” Jacques hoped the man didn't plan on arguing. This wasn’t the time or the place. They both owed Flynn their lives, and if anything, they repaid their debts.

“I want the bodies out of here as soon as possible. When Jolie wakes up, I want it to be to clean quarters.”

“Yes, Jacques,” he answered, as he began aiding in the cleanup process.

Jacques scanned the house, ensuring that his family would be safe. As hard as he tried, he couldn’t shake the fear creeping into his body.

He had almost lost Jolie forever while he was resting. She was almost ripped from his life. How would he have gone on? Then and there, he was glad that the vampyres would have finished him off too. If she had to leave, he would follow.

  She was his all.

His demeanor softened toward the detective. He was a blessing in his life, because without him, his heart would have been destroyed.

  Literally and figuratively.

As he sat on the side of the bed, caressing Jolie’s face, he struggled to find peace. All that he was feeling at that moment was the deep need to enact retribution.

It was only a matter of time.

  It would be happening.

  Thursday Late Night

Jolie started to wake, pulling away from the cold hold of death. Her body was sore and achy, but that was to be expected. After she opened her eyes, her first concern was for the man who had risked his life to save them. Concentrating on Flynn’s body, she checked to make sure it was healing properly, and it was, just slower than hers. They both needed to rest longer.

When the bed moved, Jolie knew who approached.

“I’m fine, Jacques,” she said, reading his mind.

“Jolie, the fear will never subside,” he blurted, pulling her gently into his arms as he kissed her face and her throat.

“Mmmmm… much better,” she replied, staring into his eyes. “I need to feed, Jacques. I’ve lost too much blood, and now I need to supply for Flynn, too.”

“It’s all yours, my love,” he said, taking her hand and moving his throat toward her mouth. He twisted the band around her finger as he prepared for her to drink from his body. As her teeth plunged into his throat, and the pleasure rushed through his body, he was acutely aware of Jolie’s flesh pressed to his.

  “Je t’aime, Jolie.”

She pulled her fangs from his neck and pressed her mouth to his in a sensual kiss. He was able to taste himself deep within her mouth, and it excited him. She slowly pulled her lips from his. “I love you too, Jacques,” she replied.

“You better tend to the detective,” he offered, taking one for the team. While the taste and scent of his mate was calling to him, there were more pressing matters.

She leaned over Brogan and lightly ran her fingers over his body. “We need to get him cleaned up,” she said, brushing some of his black hair from his cheek.

“When he wakes later, it’ll be done,” Jacques replied, forwarding the message to Chloe to have it immediately taken care of. From here on out, anything the detective needed was his job to supply.

  The bond was made.

Jolie reached into the man’s mind and searched for him. When she found the spark of life, she called to him.

“Jolie? Jacques? Where am I?” asked Brogan.

“You’re in our bed, healing. I needed to feed you again.”

He trusted them completely, hoping they would hold him to life. When he could feel the sticky liquid dripping into his mouth, he fought not to choke.

“Shhhhh, just swallow, Flynn,” Jolie reassured.

“I’m trying,” he stated, praying his stomach didn't betray him. Finally, he got it all down.

“Now relax and fall back into the void, Flynn. You’ll be healed by tomorrow night. I’ll wake you then and check on you.”

“It hurts like a bitch, Jolie.”

“I can help you, Flynn.” It was Jacques’s voice. “I’ll take some of your pain and share it.”

Immediately, he felt warmth touch his body.

  “How’s that, Detective?”

  “That’s better. Thank you.”

“You’re next my love,” said Jacques, taking her hand and kissing her ring finger.

“Will you wake me if you need me, Jacques?”

“Absolutely. I’ll watch over you both until you’re well.”

“You’re my heart, Jacques,” she whispered, as she laid back in their bed, curling around the man already waiting for her to lead him into the darkness.

“Let’s go, mon ami,” she whispered into his mind.

“I’ll follow,” Brogan said, with nothing but complete trust.

Jolie took him with her, but the entire time she truly believed that they had stolen some of Brogan’s mortality.

  Death and guilt swamped her.

  Friday Night

Jacques leaned over his mate and pushed energy into her body. He breathed life back into her as she took her first breath. From his mouth, the precious energy flowed, filling her and dragging her back to the surface and into his arms.

“Bonjour, mon amour,” she said, after she broke the contact.

“Hello, beautiful. How do you feel?” he asked.

“Completely healed,” she replied, sitting up. “But I’m still hungry,” she added, licking the sensitive part of his neck below his ear.

“We’ll finish this after you wake the detective. We have a great deal to discuss with him. Not to mention, we have an appointment with Medea later at Genevieve’s home.”

“Very well, my love, but I’ll be thinking about what I plan on doing later with you.” Jolie wasted no time, sending the erotic pictures into his mind.

He hissed as his body tightened.

  “Later, Jacques.”

Helping her slide out of bed, Jacques waited for her to head to her closet. When Jolie returned with the silk robe, he was still thinking about her.

Jolie climbed onto their bed and toward their human.

“Flynn,” she called, waiting for him to acknowledge her. When she placed her hands on his stomach, where he was stabbed, there was no more pain radiating from him.

“Flynn, can you hear me?” she asked out loud, leaning against him. “I need you to open your eyes for me,” she called. Slowly, his icy blue eyes tried to focus on her face.

  “Am I dead?”

Jolie grinned, and was compelled to lean down to sweetly kiss Flynn.

“Okay. Now, I know I’m dead. You’re kissing me, I‘m naked in your bed, and Jacques isn’t trying to kill me. Maybe this is a really great dream.”

Jacques laughed and so did Jolie. “Mon ami, can you sit up?” asked Jacques, offering the detective his hand.

“I think I can,” he replied, letting the vampyre help him into an upright position. When there wasn’t any pain, he took it as a good sign.

  “We have to talk, Flynn.”

That scared the hell out of him. “Whenever anyone says those words, in that tone, it is never a good thing,” he added. “Shouldn’t I be dead?”

“Well, mon ami, that’s what we need to discuss with you. In order to save you, we had to bond you to us,” answered Jacques, his face completely blank.

“Am I a vampyre?” he asked, cautiously. “Did we have this conversation before?” Brogan inquired, unable to recall the last few hours.

“No, you can’t turn a human into one of our kind. It’s nothing but exaggerated stories passed down over time,” replied Jolie. “Unfortunately though, we did have to bond you to us.”

“What does that mean exactly, and didn’t you refuse to do it before when I wanted to go to council with you?”

  Jolie nodded, feeling guilty.

“You will pick up some of the side benefits of being tied to vampyres,” continued Jacques for Jolie. He reassuringly took his mate’s hand in his.

“Like?” he asked, watching her face go cautiously blank. While she tried to hide everything, he could see it.

“You’ll see and hear better than a human. All your senses are going to be heightened and more like ours.”

So far, nothing was freaking him out. “Okay. I can do all that,” he answered, before pausing. “Why do I feel like there’s a longer list of bad things coming up?” he asked again, cautiously.

“It depends on your point of view, Flynn.” answered Jolie, honestly.

“Let me have them. I can take it.”

“Well, you’re going to have to feed from one of us every day,” she began, as she watched his face. “Energy and not blood,” she clarified. Immediately, he looked more relaxed, “Then, when we die every day, you’ll get weak.”

  “How weak?”

“No less than a normal human.”

“That’s fine,” he said, meeting their gaze. “Come on, guys. I know you’re waiting on the big one.”

“Flynn, we’re immortal,” she alluded, hoping he would get what she was saying, without her having to actually say the words.

When he didn't, it was time.

“And now, so are you. We now share your soul, so you can’t take it back to die when you get old. Your body will stay in this stage, unless we expire.”

He sat there for a few minutes and looked at his hands. “I’ll never get any older than this?”

  They both shook their heads.

  “You’re sharing my soul?”

“It’s fragmented into three parts, and we each have a piece of it. Normally, it would only be you and myself,” Jolie began, “but since I was already mated to Jacques, he’s gotten a pie
ce too.”

He glanced back and forth between them.

“When we’re together in close proximity, your soul believes it’s whole. If we separate, then your soul feels lost and confused. You can’t age because we hold a piece in us. When it would be your time to die, your soul can’t leave your body.”

Jacques stared into his eyes. “It’s complicated, and it’s exactly why we didn't want to do this in the first place. Unfortunately, our hand was forced. It was do it or lose you.”

“I understand. If you die, then what happens?”

“Our portions of your soul are released and will find your piece. If its three hundred years from now, then your body will age immediately to what it should have been all along.”

  “Humans can’t live that long.”

“Exactly,” said Jolie “You’ll need to be near us so that you can feed every day.”

  “That means?”

“I hope you like your quarters,” replied Jacques.

“I’m moving in? Isn’t that going to look odd?”

“No, just tell everyone that you’re my lover,” answered Jolie. “It’ll explain moving in here.”

Brogan looked like someone just sucker punched him. He wasn’t sure which was more surprising. The fact that he was now immortal or that Jolie just told him to move in and pretend that he was her lover.

  “Flynn?”

“Okay. Are you sure that I’m not a vampyre? It sounds damn near close to your existence,” he asked once more. “What if I meet a woman and want to get married?”

“You can, but you’ll still have to feed daily and will have to stop here every morning. Then, the downfall once more is that you’ll still not age. Unfortunately, she will and eventually die.”

  “Shit.”

“This is another reason why we didn’t want to bond you to us.” replied Jolie. “We didn’t wish to steal your mortality.” Jolie lowered her gaze, feeling terrible over the whole thing. It wasn’t something a vampyre did lightly. It was too much, and the tears came. “You’ll always have us, and now you’re part of our society,” she whispered softly.

Brogan watched Jolie’s tears begin to fall, and he looked helplessly at Jacques, not sure what to do.
