  “The next time you attack Nyana, I’m gonna do more than drown you.” I pushed her face in one last time. After twenty long seconds I let go and stood. Her mother was at the door with her mouthed covered. She pushed past me and grabbed Robin out the water.

  About an hour later, in walked Jai and Kenji. Rodney was washing Sade’s hair and I was under the dryer.

  “They can do all that later.” He stood and stared down at me.

  “Let me find out Kenji over Robin.” Some chick said.

  “He’s not. They’re getting married.” All of us turned our head and saw Mrs. Smith come from the back.

  “Mother, what did I tell you about coming in through the back? You’re a customer.” He rolled his eyes.

  “Hush Rodney. I couldn’t find parking.” She sat in one of the chairs by his station. I pulled the dryer down to avoid any eye contact. We’ll be done soon and hopefully she won’t say a word.

  “How much longer sweetie? Your dad needs me home soon.” Rodney sucked his teeth.

  “Ma, I’m not about to push you in front of the customers who were here first.” He was scrubbing Sade’s hair under the sink.

  “I’ll fix that.” She grabbed the wallet out her purse.

  “Who’s here for Rodney?” Four people raised their hands.

  “Here’s $100. Do you mind if he gives me a quick blowout?” All of them said no once she passed each one the money.

  “Spoiled bitch.” I whispered or I thought I did, and she swung around.

  “Excuse me.” She lifted the dryer.

  “Don’t even entertain her Ny.” Rodney yelled from across the room.

  “Aren’t you the same girl who works with the catering company I hire to give back to?” She had an evil look on her face.

  “Yup and no disrespect, but you don’t give back to shit.” She smirked.

  “Actually, I do. If it weren’t for my money and the contacts
I send there, your friend wouldn’t have a business.” I stood and snatched the cape from around my neck.

  “Oh shit.” I heard Rodney’s voice but he continued washing Sade’s hair.

  “Let’s be clear Mrs. Smith. My sister’s business was doing very well before you came along.”

  “I beg to differ.” She scoffed up.

  “Well you shouldn’t because in order for her to get you to hire her, you had to hear about how good her food was. Correct?” She didn’t say anything.

  “None of us may be rich and snooty like you but one thing we don’t do, is look down on other black folk.” She sucked her teeth and tried to walk away.

  “Throwing your money in people face to get what you want. Then bad mouthing them behind their backs. Wait, you do say it in some faces but only when you know they won’t react.” I took my earrings off.

  “I’m not at work now boo. Pop that shit you were talking about me being poor, from the hood and all the other shit.”

  “Oh no she didn’t.” One of the women said.

  “Rodney you need to control your customers.” She walked to his chair.

  “Sade sit under the dryer, Ny, let me make sure the middle dry and mother get your punk ass to the sink.” The entire shop started laughing.

  “Rodney, you know I’d never disrespect your mother but...”

  “But she deserved it. Wait til I tell Kenji. He’s gonna be mad I didn’t record it.”

  “Rodney. Let’s go. I have to meet your father.” He rolled his eyes and walked over to her.

  “Remind me to tell Tashi because if she hires her again, I’m not fucking working.” I sat down next to Sade and finished waiting.

  “Who is this bitch you’re supposed to be fucking?” Gina barged in my office and slammed her stuff on my desk.

  I literally just walked in from the shop. Nyana text Kenji about her showing up and the two of us went there. She was gone by the time we arrived, but Sade was there and I must say, she put a smile on my face.

  I didn’t have her number to text or find out how she was doing, and I wanted to every day since she left my moms crib. I did send the photos to my phone and for some reason I deleted the number. Its probably because Gina was calling me from various numbers, and I didn’t want any of them in my phone.

  I did call the precinct she worked at and they said she took a leave of absence. It made me nervous because I wasn’t sure if he beat on her more or what?

  I could’ve gotten it at the club but totally forgot when the shit kicked off with Kenji and the other woman, who tried her hardest to get him to take her home.

  Anyway, I asked my boy to get Ny to bring her out tonight so we could get to know one another on a different level.   “What bitch?” I threw her purse on the floor and opened my door. People were in the gym and kids were playing basketball. I needed to hear everything going on.

  “Nah we good. Bye Gina.” I looked him up and down and went back in my office.

  “I don’t give a fuck what it looks like.” I barked and looked at my ex.

  “Gina stop causing a scene at my place of business. We’re no longer together and it’s been that way for a minute now. Don’t make this worse.”

  “Whoa. Sir, you can’t be making threats in front of me.” I chuckled.

  “That’s not a threat but this is.” I stood toe to toe with him.

  “Jai, I’ll leave. I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Gina pushed me in the office and closed the door.

  I could hear her thanking the guy and leaving. He stared in the glass window of my office as he walked away. I called my manager in and told him I was leaving. If I didn’t, my ass would most likely be in jail before the end of the night.

  “You look very nice.” I told Sade when she walked out the house. We picked Ny up first and assumed Sade would be there, but she wanted to get dressed at home.

  “Thank you. Where are we going?” I took her hand and helped her down the stairs. Tashi lived in a big house and I didn’t want her to fall down because it was raining and mad steps.

  “Out for a night on the town. You ready?” She smiled and got on the passenger side.

  Kenji pulled off in front of us and the whole ride all we did was smile and take peeks at each other. We did make small conversation here and there, but we listened to music most of the way.

  After about forty minutes of driving, we finally arrived at the restaurant. It’s was on a lake and you had to walk down a pier to get in. It was nice as hell and so were the yachts lit up in the water. I didn’t even know they were allowed but I guess when you have money, you can do whatever you want.

  “Smith, for four.” Kenji told the hostess who walked us to a corner spot.

  “Wow babe. This is really nice.” Nyana said and Sade agreed.

  “Can I start everyone off with something to drink?” The waitress put the silverware down wrapped in napkins and the little coasters for the drinks. We all gave our order and looked over the menu when she walked away.

  “Can you two wait til later?” Sade said to Kenji and Nyana who were acting like newlyweds.

  “My bad sis. So Jai, what made you open a community center?” Ny asked and it seemed like the conversation flowed after.

  We all talked about any and everything. Once the liquor kicked in, Kenji said it was time to go. Talking about he loves having drunk sex with her.

  “It’s a long drive back. You ok to drive?” I laughed and closed the passenger side door.

  “It is a long drive, which is why we’re staying close.” I expected her to object but not one word left her lips.
