[22] Κύριος ἔκτισέ με ἀρχὴν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ εἰς ἔργα αὐτοῦ,
[22] The Lord made me the beginning of his ways for his works.
[23] πρὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐθεμελίωσέ με ἐν ἀρχῇ, πρὸ τοῦ τὴν γῆν ποιῆσαι
[23] He established me before time was in the beginning, before he made the earth:
[24] καὶ πρὸ τοῦ τὰς ἀβύσους ποιῆσαι, πρὸ τοῦ προελθεῖν τὰς πηγὰς τῶν ὑδάτων,
[24] even before he made the depths; before the fountains of water came forth:
[25] πρὸ τοῦ ὄρη ἑδρασθῆναι, πρὸ δὲ πάντων βουνῶν γεννᾷ με.
[25] before the mountains were settled, and before all hills, he begets me.
[26] Κύριος ἐποίησε χώρας καὶ ἀοικήτους καὶ ἄκρα οἰκούμενα τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανόν.
[26] The Lord made countries and uninhabited tracks, and the highest inhabited parts of the world.
[27] ἡνίκα ἡτοίμαζε τὸν οὐρανόν, συμπαρήμην αὐτῷ, καὶ ὅτε ἀφώριζε τὸν ἑαυτοῦ θρόνον ἐπ᾿ ἀνέμων·
[27] When he prepared the heaven, I was present with him; and when he prepared his throne upon the winds:
[28] ἡνίκα ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ ἄνω νέφη, καὶ ὡς ἀσφαλεῖς ἐτίθει πηγὰς τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανὸν
[28] and when he strengthened the clouds above; and when he secured the fountains of the earth:
[29] καὶ ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς,
[29] and when he strengthened the foundations of the earth:
[30] ἤμην παρ᾿ αὐτῷ ἁρμόζουσα. ἐγὼ ἤμην ᾗ προσέχαιρε, καθ᾿ ἡμέραν δὲ εὐφραινόμην ἐν προσώπῳ αὐτοῦ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ,
[30] I was by him, suiting myself to him, I was that wherein he took delight; and daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.
[31] ὅτε ἐνευφραίνετο τὴν οἰκουμένην συντελέσας, καὶ ἐνευφραίνετο ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων.
[31] For he rejoiced when he had completed the world, and rejoiced among the children of men.
[32] νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ μακάριοι, οἳ ὁδούς μου φυλάσσοντες,
[32] Now then, hearken unto me, O my son; for blessed are they that keep my ways
[33] ἀκούσατε παιδείαν καὶ σοφίσθητε καὶ μὴ ἀποφραγῆτε.
[33] hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
[34] μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς εἰσακούεταί μου, καὶ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς τὰς ἐμὰς ὁδοὺς φυλάξει ἀγρυπνῶν ἐπ᾿ ἐμαῖς θύραις καθ᾿ ἡμέραν, τηρῶν σταθμοὺς ἐμῶν εἰσόδων·
[34] Blessed is the man that shall hear me, and the mortal that shall keep my ways; watching daily at my doors, waiting at the posts of my entrances.
[35] αἱ γὰρ ἔξοδοί μου ἔξοδοι ζωῆς, καὶ ἑτοιμάζεται θέλησις παρὰ Κυρίου.
[35] For my outgoings are the outgoings of life, and in them is prepared favour from the Lord.
[36] οἱ δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς ἐμὲ ἀσεβοῦσιν εἰς τὰ ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς, καὶ οἱ μισοῦντές με ἀγαπῶσι θάνατον.
[36] But they that sin against me act wickedly against their own souls: and they that hate me love death.
Chapter 9
Η σοφία ᾠκοδόμησεν ἑαυτῇ οἶκον καὶ ὑπήρεισε στύλους ἑπτά·
Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars.
[2] ἔσφαξε τὰ ἑαυτῆς θύματα, ἐκέρασεν εἰς κρατῆρα τὸν ἑαυτῆς οἶνον καὶ ἡτοιμάσατο τὴν ἑαυτῆς τράπεζαν·
[2] She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table.
[3] ἀπέστειλε τοὺς ἑαυτῆς δούλους συγκαλοῦσα μετὰ ὑψηλοῦ κηρύγματος ἐπὶ κρατῆρα λέγουσα·
[3] She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,
[4] ὅς ἐστιν ἄφρων, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με· καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρενῶν εἶπεν·
[4] Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that want understanding she says,
[5] ἔλθετε φάγετε τῶν ἐμῶν ἄρτων καὶ πίετε οἶνον, ὃν ἐκέρασα ὑμῖν·
[5] Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.
[6] ἀπολείπετε ἀφροσύνην, ἵνα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα βασιλεύσητε, καὶ ζητήσατε φρόνησιν, καὶ κατορθώσατε ἐν γνώσει σύνεσιν.
[6] Leave folly, that ye may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.
[7] ῾Ο παιδεύων κακοὺς λήψεται ἑαυτῷ ἀτιμίαν· ἐλέγχων δὲ τὸν ἀσεβῆ μωμήσεται ἑαυτόν.
[7] He that reproves evil men shall get dishonour to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly man shall disgrace himself.
[8] μὴ ἔλεγχε κακούς, ἵνα μὴ μισήσωσί σε· ἔλεγχε σοφόν, καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε.
[8] Rebuke not evil men, lest they should hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
[9] δίδου σοφῷ ἀφορμήν, καὶ σοφώτερος ἔσται· γνώριζε δικαίῳ, καὶ προσθήσει τοῦ δέχεσθαι.
[9] Give an opportunity to a wise man, and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more instruction.
[10] ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου, καὶ βουλὴ ἁγίων σύνεσις, τὸ δὲ γνῶναι νόμον διανοίας ἐστὶν ἀγαθῆς·
[10] The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding: for to know the law is the character of a sound mind.
[11] τούτῳ γὰρ τῷ τρόπῳ πολὺν ζήσεις χρόνον, καὶ προστεθήσεταί σοι ἔτη ζωῆς σου.
[11] For in this way thou shalt live long, and years of thy life shall be added to thee.
[12] υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὸς γένῃ σεαυτῷ, σοφὸς ἔση καὶ τοῖς πλησίον· ἐὰν δὲ κακὸς ἀποβῇς, μόνος ἂν ἀντλήσεις κακά. ὃς ἐρείδεται ἐπὶ ψεύδεσιν, οὗτος ποιμαίνει ἀνέμους, ὁ δ᾿ αὐτὸς διώξεται ὄρνεα πετόμενα· ἀπέλιπε γὰρ ὁδοὺς τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τοὺς δὲ ἄξονας τοῦ ἰδίου γεωργίου πεπλάνηται· διαπορεύεται δὲ δι᾿ ἀνύδρου ἐρήμου καὶ γῆν διατεταγμένην ἐν διψώδεσι, συνάγει δὲ χερσὶν ἀκαρπίαν.
[12] Son, if thou be wise for thyself, thou shalt also be wise for thy neighbours; and if thou shouldest prove wicked, thou alone wilt bear the evil. He that stays himself upon falsehoods, attempts to rule the winds, and the same will pursue birds in their fight: for he has forsaken the ways of his own vineyard, and he has caused the axles of his own husbandry to go astray; and he goes through a dry desert, and a land appointed to drought, and he gathers barrenness with his hands.
[13] Γυνὴ ἄφρ�
�ν καὶ θρασεῖα ἐνδεὴς ψωμοῦ γίνεται, ἣ οὐκ ἐπίσταται αἰσχύνην.
[13] A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to want a morsel.
[14] ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ θύραις τοῦ ἑαυτῆς οἴκου, ἐπὶ δίφρου ἐμφανῶς ἐν πλατείαις,
[14] She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets,
[15] προσκαλουμένη τοὺς παριόντας καὶ κατευθύνοντας ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν·
[15] calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways;
[16] ὅς ἐστιν ὑμῶν ἀφρονέστατος, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρονήσεως παρακελεύομαι λέγουσα·
[16] saying, Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that want prudence, saying,
[17] ἄρτων κρυφίων ἡδέως ἅψασθε καὶ ὕδατος κλοπῆς γλυκεροῦ.
[17] Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.
[18] ὁ δὲ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι γηγενεῖς παρ᾿ αὐτῇ ὄλλυνται, καὶ ἐπὶ πέταυρον ᾅδου συναντᾷ.
[18] But he knows that mighty men die by her, and he falls in with a snare of hell.
[18]α ἀλλὰ ἀποπήδησον, μὴ χρονίσῃς ἐν τῷ τόπῳ, μηδὲ ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτήν·
[18a] But hasten away, delay not in the place, neither fix thine eye upon her:
[18]β οὕτως γὰρ διαβήσῃ ὕδωρ ἀλλότριον καὶ ὑπερβήσῃ ποταμὸν ἀλλότριον·
[18b] for thus shalt thou go through strange water; and pass through a strange river.
[18]γ ἀπὸ δὲ ὕδατος ἀλλοτρίου ἀπόσχου καὶ ἀπὸ πηγῆς ἀλλοτρίας μὴ πίῃς,
[18c] but do thou abstain from strange water, and drink not of a strange fountain,
[18]δ ἵνα πολὺν ζήσῃς χρόνον, προστεθῇ δέ σοι ἔτη ζωῆς.
[18d] that thou mayest live long, and years of life may be added to thee.
Chapter 10
ΥΙΟΣ σοφὸς εὐφραίνει πατέρα, υἱὸς δὲ ἄφρων λύπη τῇ μητρί.
A wise son makes his father glad: but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
[2] οὐκ ὠφελήσουσι θησαυροὶ ἀνόμους, δικαιοσύνη δὲ ρύσεται ἐκ θανάτου.
[2] Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death.
[3] οὐ λιμοκτονήσει Κύριος ψυχὴν δικαίαν, ζωὴν δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀνατρέψει.
[3] The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly.
[4] πενία ἄνδρα ταπεινοῖ, χεῖρες δὲ ἀνδρείων πλουτίζουσιν.
[4] Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigorous make rich.
[4]α υἱὸς πεπαιδευμένος σοφὸς ἔσται, τῷ δὲ ἄφρονι διακόνῳ χρήσεται.
[4a] A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant.
[5] διεσώθη ἀπὸ καύματος υἱὸς νοήμων, ἀνεμόφθορος δὲ γίνεται ἐν ἀμητῷ υἱὸς παράνομος.
[5] A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest.
[6] εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καλύψει πένθος ἄωρον.
[6] The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
[7] μνήμη δικαίων μετ᾿ ἐγκωμίων, ὄνομα δὲ ἀσεβοῦς σβέννυται.
[7] The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly man is extinguished.
[8] σοφὸς καρδίᾳ δέξεται ἐντολάς, ὁ δὲ ἄστεγος χείλεσι σκολιάζων ὑποσκελισθήσεται.
[8] A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he that is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness.
[9] ὃς πορεύεται ἁπλῶς, πορεύεται πεποιθώς, ὁ δὲ διαστρέφων τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, γνωσθήσεται.
[9] He that walks simply, walks confidently; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.
[10] ὁ ἐννεύων ὀφθαλμοῖς μετὰ δόλου, συνάγει ἀνδράσι λύπας, ὁ δὲ ἐλέγχων μετὰ παρρησίας, εἰρηνοποιεῖ.
[10] He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.
[11] πηγὴ ζωῆς ἐν χειρὶ δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβοῦς καλύψει ἀπώλεια.
[11] There is a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
[12] μῖσος ἐγείρει νεῖκος, πάντας δὲ τοὺς μὴ φιλονεικοῦντας καλύπτει φιλία.
[12] Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.
[13] ὃς ἐκ χειλέων προφέρει σοφίαν, ράβδῳ τύπτει ἄνδρα ἀκάρδιον.
[13] He that brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod.
[14] σοφοὶ κρύψουσιν αἴσθησιν, στόμα δὲ προπετοῦς ἐγγίζει συντριβῇ.
[14] The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin.
[15] κτῆσις πλουσίων πόλις ὀχυρά, συντριβὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πενία.
[15] The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly.
[16] ἔργα δικαίων ζωὴν ποιεῖ, καρποὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἁμαρτίας.
[16] The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly produce sins.
[17] ὁδοὺς δικαίας ζωῆς φυλάσσει παιδεία, παιδεία δὲ ἀνεξέλεγκτος πλανᾶται.
[17] Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.
[18] καλύπτουσιν ἔχθραν χείλη δίκαια, οἱ δὲ ἐκφέροντες λοιδορίας ἀφρονέστατοί εἰσιν.
[18] Righteous lips cover enmity; but they that utter railings are most foolish.
[19] ἐκ πολυλογίας οὐκ ἐκφεύξῃ ἁμαρτίαν, φειδόμενος δὲ χειλέων νοήμων ἔσῃ.
[19] By a multitude of words thou shalt not escape sin; but if thou refrain thy lips thou wilt be prudent.
[20] ἄργυρος πεπυρωμένος γλῶσσα δικαίου, καρδία δὲ ἀσεβοῦς ἐκλείψει.
[20] The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail.
[21] χείλη δικαίων ἐπίσταται ὑψηλά, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες ἐν ἐνδείᾳ τελευτῶσιν.
[21] The lips of the righteous know sublime truths: but the foolish die in want.
[22] εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου· αὕτη πλουτίζει, καὶ οὐ μὴ προστεθῇ αὐτῇ λύπη ἐν καρδία.
[22] The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous; it enriches him, and grief of heart shall not be added to it.
[23] ἐν
γέλωτι ἄφρων πράσσει κακά, ἡ δὲ σοφία ἀνδρὶ τίκτει φρόνησιν.
[23] A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man.
[24] ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ ἀσεβὴς περιφέρεται, ἐπιθυμία δὲ δικαίου δεκτή.
[24] The ungodly is engulphed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable.
[25] παραπορευομένης καταιγίδος ἀφανίζεται ἀσεβής, δίκαιος δὲ ἐκκλίνας σώζεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
[25] When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever.
[26] ὥσπερ ὄμφαξ ὀδοῦσι βλαβερὸν καὶ καπνὸς ὄμμασιν, οὕτως παρανομία τοῖς χρωμένοις αὐτῇ.
[26] As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those that practise it.
[27] φόβος Κυρίου προστίθησιν ἡμέρας, ἔτη δὲ ἀσεβῶν ὀλιγωθήσεται.
[27] The fear of the Lord adds length of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.
[28] ἐγχρονίζει δικαίοις εὐφροσύνη, ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολεῖται.
[28] Joy rests long with the righteous: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.
[29] ὀχύρωμα ὁσίου φόβος Κυρίου, συντριβὴ δὲ τοῖς ἐργαζομένοις κακά.
[29] The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints: but ruin comes to them that work wickedness.
[30] δίκαιος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα οὐκ ἐνδώσει, ἀσεβεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἰκήσουσι γῆν.
[30] The righteous shall never fail: but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth.
[31] στόμα δικαίου ἀποστάζει σοφίαν, γλῶσσα δὲ ἀδίκου ἐξολεῖται.
[31] The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.
[32] χείλη ἀνδρῶν δικαίων ἀποστάζει χάριτας, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀποστρέφεται.
