Tempted

My feet begin moving in that direction, although I’m barely even conscious of making the decision. It’s chilly, and I shiver a little, wrapping my arms around myself. I should have brought a coat, but I don’t want to go back to my pod to get one. I want to go see him.
I went for the first time right after we arrived on Kalix. I just wanted to make sure he was being treated okay, but since then, I’ve found myself going back again and again.
It’s probably not very wise. I’m not even sure I can totally trust any of these aliens yet. Their intentions seem good, but a month ago I didn’t even know aliens existed. Now I’ve learned that there are many inhabited planets in the universe, hundreds of alien species—and that I might be stuck living here among the Kalixians for good. It’s a lot to come to terms with.
And I know that this Kalixian, most of all, is certainly dangerous. Even though I have a translator chip implanted now, like all the other rescued women, I can’t understand anything he says. They’re just grunts and growls with no discernible meaning, and the other Kalixians don’t seem to be able to interpret them either.
I don’t think he can understand any of us. Or if he can, he has no interest in communicating. His face is tattooed, and his horns have been sharpened to dangerous points.
He’s wild and primal and savage—but for some reason, I keep going back.
I can hear him as I reach the entrance of the building, a loud roar rising up as I walk inside. The two Kalixians at the door recognize me. I can tell from the bemused expressions on their faces what they think of my coming here to visit him, but they escort me down the hall to where he’s being kept anyway, keeping their opinions to themselves.
The alien is being kept in a cage in one wing of the building. It’s large and clean, with padding and bedding in one corner. I’ve been told his confinement is for his protection and everyone else’s, but I still don’t like it. He’s not an animal, and he shouldn’t be kept in a cage, no matter what.
Unfortunately, I don’t exactly get a say in this.
He’s got his back to me as I enter the part of the building where his cage is kept. I don’t say a word, biting my bottom lip as I approach with quiet footsteps. But he stiffens when I’m still several yards away, the broad muscles of his back rippling as his hands flex.
Then he swings his head around like a predator, a quick, sharp motion that makes me take a step back.
His gaze fixes on mine—feral, wild, and fierce. As I stand frozen in place looking back at him, a shiver runs down my spine.
I should look away.
I should run away.
But I don’t.

Are you dying for more of this feral Kalixian? I was too, so I decided I had to write his story! Tamed is next in the series.
He’s been honed for battle, with hard edges and dangerous instincts, but can her softness break through his gruff exterior?
