Free To Love (The Connor Clan Prequel)

Robert shook his head.
She had killed him.
She hated him but hadn’t intended to kill him.
Her whole body shook as Robert hugged her. The tears came immediately, the ones she’d been holding back for so long. Tears for losing her parents. Tears for the lives both she and the boys had endured. Tears for her aunt. Her shoulders heaved as she gasped for air, but eventually, the tears stopped.
“Everything will be all right.” Robert grabbed a tablecloth to cover the body. He helped her to the main room, where she sat on the couch while he telephoned the police.
“I killed him. The police will lock me away. I’m so sorry, Robert. I never meant to bring this on your family.”
“No one is going to lock you away. It was self-defense. He would have killed us both in his rage. You did what you had to do, and I owe you my life because of it.” He held her in his arms and she never wanted him to let her go. Here she would be safe.
Two Months Later
Marie pulled into the driveway, then rushed to the front door. She couldn’t wait to tell Robert the news.
It would have to wait.
They had a visitor—Mr. Shaw, the family solicitor, was there.
“Mr. Shaw is here with some news for you and the boys.”
She didn’t like surprises even if she had a big one for Robert.
“Your late aunt and uncle’s will has been finalized, and I’ve been asked to inform you that you are the sole inheritors of the farm.”
Marie sat down, or her legs would have given out beneath her. Who could have known the future would turn out like this? Mr. Shaw talked on, but she couldn’t take it all in. She was a wealthy woman now, but she was where she wanted to be. She would ask the boys if they wanted to go back but doubted that they would.
When Mr. Shaw had left, Robert went to the drinks cabinet. “I think we should celebrate and then you can give the boys the good news.”
“I can’t.”
“Why not? Everything will be good from now on, I promise.”
Marie strolled over and placed her arms around his neck. “I know it will, but I’ll have to delay that drink. Robert, I’m pregnant.”
Robert scooped her up and whisked her around. He let her feet down carefully, then kissed her deeply. “I love you, Marie. I should have said it before. I lost someone in the past and never thought I could be happy again. Then this wonderful woman with her two brothers came into my life and look where I am today.”
Whatever the future would bring, Marie knew being part of the Connor Clan was where she wanted to be.

Australian author Maggie Mundy lives in Australia with her husband and two dogs. She has always loved reading fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary books and decided the stories in her head needed to be written—it was either that or start on medication.
She writes hot, sexy men and women who have troubled pasts and are looking for their soulmate. She may make them suffer along the way, but you always get a happy ending.
Maggie believes romance can be fun to read and write, but it’s exciting to spice it up with the uncertainty that comes with suspense where the rules can be broken.
