Nora had even managed to contact every one of the women from Centered who Diana had “relocated” to Miami, and discovered that they were still, miraculously, safe. Diana had been using them for free labor at one of the many legitimate businesses she owned in Florida, and although they’d essentially been prisoners, none of them had been physically harmed.
And Diego… he’d come a long way. He now managed to actually sleep at night, instead of tossing and turning and muttering to himself, always watchful, always vigilant. She no longer woke up to an empty bed while he roamed the house haunted by what troubled him, and when she woke he was instead by her side, holding onto her as if to protect her, but deep down inside, she knew that he needed her as much as she needed him.
The crystal clear water went on as far as the eye could see, blue-tinged, reflecting the red-orange rays of the setting sun.
“White sand,” Diego had said. “I want white sand and cold drinks and a swanky hotel.”
So white sand it was, along the crescent-shaped beach lined with palm trees of Kauna’oa Bay, Hawaii. They’d arrived after a ten-hour flight the night before, and after a good night’s sleep, and a deliciously lazy morning, they were settling in for some relaxation. Nora adjusted her towel on the hot sand, leaned over, and kissed Diego’s cheek. He smiled at her briefly before scanning the beach, mere habit now, as everyone he’d been trying to bring down now stood behind bars and Diego was a free man.
“Relax, Daddy,” Nora said, “Just close your eyes and enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.”
He laid back, and she smiled to herself as he actually closed his eyes and rested.
It was the end of an era, but just the beginning of good things to come.
