  Acknowledgments

I first started writing this book 15 years ago, after attending a business writing course and learning a technique that I knew would help me plan a novel. It’s been through many iterations then and a lot of people have helped coax it to a publishable state.

Rob Ashton of Emphasis was responsible for that course which was the original impetus.

Sally O-J went through a very early (and terrible) draft and gave me invaluable advice on the things I needed to do to improve it (there were plenty).

Sue Hayman MP very kindly read a later draft and highlighted inaccuracies in the Westminster setting as well as giving me suggestions for locations only MPs know about. Any errors are mine, not hers.

Members of Birmingham Writers Group gave me feedback on various drafts and excerpts and told me about an embarrassing repeated typo. Special thanks to Martin, Kirsty, Heide and Iain.

My book group were the very first people to read it all the way through and give their feedback - which I’m sure was way more glowing than it deserved at that point. Thanks to Toni, Ruth, Liz, Teresa, Louise, Jenny and Jane.

My small but perfectly formed beta team read a slightly later version and all agreed on one massive plot point that needed changing - I listened and the book is better for it. Thanks to Justin, Nicola and Pete.

My editor Dexter Petley gave me invaluable advice on letting the story breathe and improving my characterisation.

And finally thanks to my family, not least my mum Carol, whose political convictions inspired me to become involved in politics and whose unwavering encouragement was the impetus I needed to start writing a novel. I wish she could see this being published.
