Everything I'd done in my life up-to this point,

  Running away from Fibonacci,

  Fighting illegally,

  And then joining the Service.

None of it was worth it if I wouldn't truly be happy by the end of it.

And I knew that being with Donte would make me very, very happy.

He was the only man who knew how to calm me down.

How to make me feel so good about myself.

How to make me feel things that I didn't know I could feel.

A sigh escaped my lips, as I continued to stare at myself in the mirror. I folded my arms uneasily, as I contemplated the whole situation.

I wasn't ready to tell him about my involvement in the Secret Service yet, though.

How would it make him feel?

Knowing that I'd been lying about my identity.

That the reason I came to live here in the first place...

Was to put him behind bars...?

Even though that wasn't my motive anymore, now that I'd fallen for him, and 482

realized that he was innocent in all of this...

I just didn't think that he would understand.

  It would completely break him…

  Finding out about this.

  Something as big as this.

A betrayal as big as this.

I began sweating profusely, my heart hammering against my chest into a frenzy.

I'd kept him waiting in his bedroom long enough. I should go back and speak to him.

I quickly pulled my dress back on, before I flushed the toilet again for good measure, and made my way out of his en-suite. Unlocking the door, and striding back into his bedroom.

Donte was standing there with his arms folded. He had a worried expression on his face.

He looked so concerned about me.

“Are you okay, baby girl?” he asked wearily. “You were in there for quite a while.”

I drew out a deep breath.

“Yeah,” I shrugged finally. “I was just thinking about some stuff.”

  “I

  understand,”

  Donte

  nodded

  reassuringly. “Let's lay down.”

I nodded in response, feeling butterflies hammer against my chest. Knowing that now would be the time to speak to him properly, after 483

going around in circles with him for so damn long…

He took my hand in his, picking me up in his big strong arms, carrying me to the bed Bridal-style. He gently lay me down, wrapping me in a blanket, before sliding into the bed next to me. I allowed my head to rest against his chest.

  I loved this man.

I loved him so fucking much…

“I'm so sorry about your Mom,” he whispered, as he stroked my hair and kissed my forehead. “If I lost my Mom, I don't know what I'd do.” He broke off his sentence, sighing heavily as his chest heaved upwards and downwards, his breathing becoming laboured with my touch.

“But I promise you, all pain gets better with time.

It's gonna be hard, but you're a strong woman.

  You can get through anything.”

“You're so sweet, Donte,” I breathed, swallowing down a lump that had caught in my throat. Doing my best not to break down and start crying at his kindness. His compassion.

How much he fucking cared about me. “I don't know what I did to deserve you. I've been so horrible to you.” I sniffed, tears welling in my eyes. “Cutting you off, time and time again. But you still make an effort with me. You still make time for me. You still continue to chase and 484

  pursue me.”

I rubbed my eyes with my thumbs, doing my best to stop my tears from falling. Trying my best not to become a bundle of sadness. Trying my best to stay strong.

“Baby girl, don't speak like this,” Donte whispered softly, stroking my face, as he tilted my chin up to face him. Forcing me to look him in his eyes. “I'll always be here for you.” He sighed heavily. “It doesn't matter how much you try and push me away. I want to be here for you, to reassure you.”

My eyes continued to burn into his.

Seeing my future in his eyes. Seeing us growing old together. Being happy together. Not spending another day without being in each other’s arms.

  A bright future.

A future where I would be at peace with myself.

“I don't wanna talk about my Mom tonight,” I swallowed. “No amount of tears are ever gonna bring her back. It's my own fucked up past that brought me here.”

I broke off my sentence, taking my head into my hands.

“Don't you dare say that,” Donte warned.

“None of this is your fault. It doesn't matter what 485

you've been through in the past. You can't beat yourself up about this. Nobody lives forever, Sapphire…” His chest heaved. “We're all gonna face death one day.”

“You’re right…” I mumbled. “But you know what? I don't care about my past anymore.

I can't let my past keep holding a chokehold on my life.”

“Exactly,” Donte reassured, kissing my forehead. Pulling me closer to him.

I brought his face down to mine, leaving a soft kiss on his lips. Allowing myself to linger.

Knowing that I didn’t want to spend another day without this man in my life. Knowing that my heart belonged to him. He kissed me back softly, gently caressing my face, soothing me. Allowing me to grieve.

I knew that he was my world.

“So tonight, I'm going to be honest with you,” I promised him, letting out a low sigh. He continued to stare into my eyes, squeezing my hands reassuringly. “And I want to start off by saying this. I'm so sorry for pushing you away.”

Donte’s eyes flashed with sadness. I couldn’t stop now. I had to tell him how I felt.

  No more games.

  Just pure, raw emotion.

He had to know how much I’d been 486

  hurting without him.

That I hadn’t cut things off with him deliberately.

That he was all I wanted…

“I'm sorry I've constantly strung you along.” I clutched my chest exhaustedly. “I'm sorry I've made you feel like you're getting somewhere with me, and then shut you off the next day. I'm sorry for making your heart ache to the point you've had to run back to an arranged marriage. I'm sorry for everything.

“I'm sorry for getting intimate with you and then running out.

“I'm sorry for how harshly I've treated you.

“For all the bad things I've said to you.

  “At the club…

  “In your office.”

I let out a deep exhalation. I had to keep going.

“Because the truth is, Donte, I want you,”

I whispered. “I want all of you.”
