Matt
The town was exactly as I left it. Down to the locally owned shops.
And yet, it all felt different.
I couldn’t explain it at first, as I walked down the paved streets, I could have done it with my eyes closed.
Each little quirky side road, the store owners that waved hello to each other as they opened for business. Flipping over closed signs to open.
I felt welcome like I hadn’t ever left. Especially by a group of attractive women that walked past, who smiled at me in that way that said exactly what you supposed it meant.
I wondered if they went to the local high school at the same time I did. There was a reunion in a few days, maybe they’d be there.
That's when it hit me. That's what was different.
I was a scrawny little kid when I left. Barely pushing 5 ft 5, you could see right to my bones. I wrote baggy clothes to try and hide my skinniness, but it only accentuated it.
But now I’m back? 6 ft 5, and those baggy t-shirts would hug my muscles tight. I did hit the gym, but I hardly needed to at the farm. They worked me hard, it turned me into a man.
I remember my first day there, using those tools, my arms ached, muscles burning with a use they had never felt before.
But after a week. It was easy.
After a month I had started to show some definition, and I was more sure on my feet. Confident.
And after a year I was unrecognizable. Flirting with the local girls like it was no different from joking around with the other guy at the farm.
The farm I eventually grew up to own, once pa kicked it.
But that was all over now, instead of a farm I had a large check given by a faceless cooperation that wanted the land for their own use.
With pa gone, the farm was a hub of heartbreak, so I took the money and came back home. Searching for some kind of meaning.
Would I find it? Knowing that the boy that grew up here was not the same as the man that returned?
I didn’t even know what I was looking for.
Well, that was a lie, right now I was looking for somewhere with a table, where I could sit and open my laptop.
What did people usually do, they went to a coffee shop right?
Not my local scene I thought. As I adjusted the laptop bag under my shoulder.
But neither was sitting alone in the home I had brought.
The home that had far too many rooms, the silence of each one felt almost deafening.
Why did I need to buy such a large house? Just because it was so cheap, and with my big payout I could afford it, didn't mean I needed it.
Those big empty rooms reminded me a little too much of the farmhouse, pa was such a big personality he seemed to fill all of them with his big booming voice.
Did I say he was my pa? That’s just what I grew to call him over time, we weren't related, but by the end of it, all that soil we dug, it was thicker than blood.
I would've been fine with a small apartment.
Maybe it was a mistake coming back here.

Izzy
“Pass the chocolate Sally!”
“Here ya go.”
Sally chucked me the chocolate powder, which I caught, but the lid wasn't on properly. So my face was suddenly completely covered with chocolate powder. I blew my lips like a horse and some of the dust came out.
“I’m sorry Izzy!”
I sighed, and that adorable look of worry on her face melted me. I couldn’t be mad at her, she was a good kid.
But she had also never had a job before and was prone to doing silly stuff like that.
I shouldn’t have hired her really, there were far more people qualified for the job, and in a small town like this, work was hard to come by. Even a coffee shop job was sought after.
But that's why she melted my heart, knowing that she might not be able to get a job elsewhere. And if I could train her to be a little more responsible, and experienced, then she’d have more opportunities elsewhere, if she ever wanted to up and leave this town.
Like I never had the chance to, not that I ever really wanted to. I was deeply rooted here and loved every second of it, but that wasn’t to say she might not want to.
She should have the choice at least.
I sighed and turned around to look at myself in the mirror, my mood instantly changed.
I burst out laughing. “Don’t throw any more stuff at me ok! We pass things like civilized adults. take over the till would ya, I’m going to wash this off.”
“Sorry again Izzy!”
Just as I was about to go to the backroom to wash up, the bell above the door rang and the specimen that opened it had to kneel down to enter the doorway.
“Holy balls,” I said out loud, and then covered my mouth. Tasting the chocolate.
He walked forward with a grin on his face. “You’ve got a little something on you,” he said, clearly trying not to laugh, out of politeness.
“Oh, that was just my clumsy assistant chucking stuff at me.”
“It looks good on you, probably started a trend. I bet all the girls will be walking around with that over their faces now.” He said. I knew he was joking, but it was friendly.
There was something else about him that was a little familiar. But I would remember someone like him, that was for sure.
It actually hurt my neck to look up at him, so when I looked down I saw that chiseled chest, fighting to get out of that shirt. I did a double-take at first, how the hell could you be that ripped and handsome at the same time? He was like a walking magazine cover. Usually people seemed to be one or the other, never both, not in this town.
They didn't make ‘em like him in this town.
“I need to clean this off, please leave your order with her, she’ll get it to you pronto,” I said in a singsong polite voice, trying to hide how I had instantly started crushing on him, the mysterious stranger.
“Alright, just as long as she doesn’t throw my coffee at me.”
I left the front of my cafe to the back room, where I rested my back against the door and mouthed ‘oh my god’.
Who the hell was that, and what was he doing in my shop?
I closed my eyes and pictured him, what color were his eyes, blue? green? I made a note to check. I was too focused on his entire being.
And he was flirting with me too, wasn't he?
Probably just messing around, being polite to the owner of the shop. He was new in town so he wanted to be nice, I bet he wouldn't look twice at me usually.
Especially now, as I went to the sink, and started washing the powder off my face, I looked like I had just dropped face-first into a pile of dirt.
I licked my cheek, at least it tasted nice.
When I was done, I found my heart beating unusually fast, but I ignored it and pushed the door open to be greeted to the gentle pop music playing in the background of my cafe. I stood next to Izzy, who was freely staring at him.

br /> I joined her and we stood there, shamelessly staring at the hunk.
“Where’d he come from?” she said. “Heaven?”
I pinched her arm.
“Owe! What was that for?”
“He’s far too old for you. Can you go and empty the dishwasher?”
“Yea alright.” she rubbed her arm. I felt bad for pinching it, but I wanted to be here if he wanted to order something else.
There was something about him, I couldn’t place. He was so familiar.
My head was tilted a bit, staring at him. As he glanced up, and then looked again, when he saw I was staring at him.
I quickly looked down and found something to do with my hands. Which was picking up some random bits of bric-a-brac on the counter and putting it down again. Like an idiot.
I heard him stifle a little laugh. And that made me go bright red.
“New in town?” I squeaked, a barely audible noise that was unheard over the music coming out of the speakers.
“Sorry, what did you say?” he raised his eyebrow at me.
I coughed, and then said rather too deeply. “New in town?”
“Yea.” he smiled, and went back to his laptop. It was funny seeing such a huge guy, relaxed over a laptop, he was like a subdued bull in a china shop. Ready to run wild at a moment's notice. I couldn't let him leave without finding more about him.
I needed an excuse to go up and talk to him, and I knew what to do! I could bring him over a complimentary muffin. Everyone knows about the kindness of small towns, he wouldn’t think anything of it. And my muffins were to die for.
I picked a particularly juicy looking one from under the glass and placed it on a cute little plate, whilst I took over.
When he looked at me walking, I noticed that his eyes looked up and down my body, slow measured looks, taking all of me in.
I felt my whole body tingle, a shiver coming over me. He was checking me out!
It was one thing to friendly flirt, but checking out my body. My curvy body. That really did something to me.
And something told me I'd be thinking about him tonight, when I was at home alone.
‘Here you go, on the house.”
“And what about you?”
My eyes widened and I stood there gormlessly, did he just ask if I was on the house too?
“W-what?” I stuttered.
“Are you from here?” he looked at me confused.
Oh, he was just asking if I was from around here.
“Born and raised.’ I said, proudly.
“Looks like I did the right thing coming here, if they make them like you.”
My mouth opened, speechless, so I went back to behind the counter, which felt like a kind of protective force field against the growing warmth between my legs. As if he could see it, which of course was ridiculous.
But my god could I feel it.
“Smooth,” Izzy said sympathetically.
“About as smooth as dirt,” I said. Sighing.
I glanced over one more time, but he seemed too focused on whatever he was doing on his laptop.
I was just a little bit of fun for him, before he moved on with something more important.

Matt
I was only ever good at two things. Farming and flirting.
It was good to see I hadn't lost the latter when I lost the former. It certainly seemed to work on the cute cafe owner, who’s cheeks had gone bright red right. I glanced up at her one last time and grinned. But I felt a little guilty too, why?
Was it because I thought she was drop-dead gorgeous, and had this funny, sweet personality too? I flirted with everyone, often it meant nothing, and was that why I felt guilty? Because I wanted it to mean something with her. There was no reason why it couldn’t.
But there was something else too.
I recognized her. Who was she? If only she was wearing a name tag, then that would jog my memory.
She seemed far too busy to bother now, serving the slew of new customers that were coming in, as it was approaching lunchtime. What's more, I thought I had tortured her enough, I would be lying if I said I didn't know the effect I had on women. So I decided to go back to my laptop and focus on the real reason I had come out here.
Funnily enough, my laptop was far less interesting than her gorgeous curves. But I had something important to focus on.
The money I had been given for the farm, was such a large amount I felt guilty about having it. I thought I could give some of it back to a charity. And that meant researching for one that did good and didn't take a huge cut of the donations and put it right back into the pocket of executives, like those that had bought the farm off me.
And how the hell was I supposed to find that out? I wasn’t a techno whizz, put me in front of a tractor and I could fix the engine. But all this computer stuff, I had missed the whole boat. I needed someone to help me.
I sighed, and closed the laptop. Slipping it back into the bag.
What a useless endeavor today was, I hadn’t found anything. I thought it’d be easier to go on the laptop in public, but it was only more difficult, especially with the gorgeous cafe owner.
God, what was wrong with me? I usually wouldn’t have given her a second thought, but she seemed to keep popping back into my mind.
I looked up at her, studying her. God damn, she was sexy. I could tell she was trying to avoid my gaze, moving around and making coffees. But the way she moved.
I pictured putting my hands on those hips. Holding her.
And I felt a throbbing between my pants that was very real and not something I was picturing.
I think it was time to go, I wasn’t going to get anything done here.
I stood up and covered my throbbing with the laptop bag, whilst I casually waved to her.
“Thanks for the coffee.” That was when I realized I hadn’t had a chance to eat the muffin yet, I picked it up. “I’ll eat this on my walk home. How much do I owe you?”
“On the house!” she squeaked. And I felt even more guilty now, I shouldn’t have flirted with her so heavily. I should make it up to her.
I decided to make this my regular morning coffee spot. It was only a short walk from my house, and supporting a local business was the least I could do, to ingratiate myself back into the community.
“Thanks! I’ll see ya ‘round.” I made sure not to act flirty this time. I didn't want to give her the wrong impression. But what impression was that exactly?
I walked out of the coffee shop, standing just in front of the door, confused.
I think she had much more of an effect on me than I realized. It was like a high school crush, I hadn’t felt like that in a very long time.
I took a casual bite of the muffin. “Holy shit!” I said, with a mouth full of it. It was the most delicious, chocolatey taste I had ever had. This was nothing like you’d buy in a store. It was the real deal.
I had to tell her.
I gulped a bite down and opened the door. “Hey, this muffin is delicious! I’ll be back for another one of these.”
She had the biggest grin on her face at my complimenting her baking. “Thank you! It's my home recipe.”
“Well, you should be selling these all over the world. It’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted.”
“Oh thank you, that's so kind of you to say!”
I left, realizing I had a bit of the muffin across my cheek, wiping it off and felt a bit embarrassed.
Well, she had chocolate powder on her face when I walked in, so I guess now we were even.
Why the hell should I have cared what she thought anyway? I usually gave no thought to being self-conscious.
But god damn, I wanted to look good in front of her.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining as I ate the muffin, and made my way back to my house.
I still had a few things to unpack, so I guessed I could spend the rest of the day there doing that.
I entered the house, saying. “Hon
ey, I’m home.” To no one in particular, at least it gave me a chuckle, and I ignored that it felt a little sad to be alone in such a big house.
I went upstairs, to my bedroom, there were a few boxes left there to unpack.
Inside, I saw one of them. ‘Memories.’ was scrawled across the box in black pen.
“Better time than any to go through this.”
I knew exactly what would be in it. Memories of this town. I have kept a lot of things from my last year here. I wasn’t the most sentimental person, but I knew I should keep some stuff from the first part of my life, especially after I had changed so much, it seemed right.
There was one particular thing I wanted to find though. As the tape ripped off with a satisfying noise.
I opened it up and pulled out my high school yearbook. It had every member of my highschool in it from the year it was published. And there was only one high school here.
I thought she must have been around my age, because I recognized her. I couldn’t place her but I knew I knew her somehow, so this seemed like the best way to find her.
I opened it up and was flooded by familiar memories. But there was one, in particular, I was looking for.
And I found it, pretty damn quickly.
There she was.
Izzy.
Fucking Izzy.
That bitch.
I can’t believe that girl in the cafe was Izzy!
All feelings of her being gorgeous went out the window as if they never existed. I would never have feelings for my high school bully.

“You know, I think the customers find it unnerving when you’re staring at the door all wistful-like and they enter the store.” Sally patted me on the back sympathetically.
