  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The locations chosen for this novel center around the northern New Mexico towns on and around the Navajo Reservation of Nenahnezad, Kirtland, and Upper and Lower Fruitland, as well as the sixty-five-million-year-old formations of the Angel Peak Badlands and the towering rock of the Kirtland Formation from the late cretaceous period known as Flat Iron Rock. While many of the locations in this novel actually exist, a few are fictitious out of necessity. I would like to thank my friends Bettina Costagno, Bobby Mason, and Arnold Clifford—the encyclopedia of the Four Corners and well-known botanist and geologist who I was fortunate to meet—for breathing life into the area that I love so much and telling me of its rich history. Arnold, I hope to learn a great deal more from you in the future. I also wish to thank Maria Rose Biye, Lydia Fasthorse, Rochelle MacArthur, and Delane Atcitty for sharing their knowledge with me. As always, I would like to thank my agent, Richard Curtis, for his constant support and friendship and my editor, Peggy Hageman, for her nurturing guidance.
