Ingathering

by Zenna Henderson

Happens about three years after Cougar Canyon is abandoned. The fact that Jemmy—who would be 46 in 1961—is still active in rescue work suggests that this date may still be a bit too late. Helicopters are in fairly common use in rescue work. We also know that trips between Earth and New Home are still uncommon.

  1962 Shadow on the Moon

We know that Remy is 17 and Shadow is about 15. We also know that a very small number of probes have crashed on the Moon, but that no moon landings have taken place. More People have made the trip between Earth and New Home.

  1966 The Indelible Kind

They use the spaceship from “Shadow on the Moon” to rescue a stranded Russian cosmonaut. Jake Kroginold has an 8-year-old son and has travelled to New Home and back.

  1967 No Different Flesh

  Mark & Meris framing story

Occurs post—“Shadow on the Moon” and post—“Return” since characters tell both stories in the course of the story and the framing. Also, Debbie’s child is old enough to be away from his mother for multiple days. Dr. Hilf, an old doctor, “has been around since Territorial days,” which ended in 1912.

  1970 Katie-Mary’s Trip

Set sometime in the vaguely hippy era. From references to gymnastics, it is probably not more than a year or two following the 1968 Olympics.

  Acknowledgments

As with all NESFA Press publications, Ingathering is the product of many people’s volunteer efforts: It was edited by Mark and Priscilla Olson. We thank George Flynn, Master Proofreader, without whom the textual and typographic quality of this book would have been diminished. The dustjacket was designed by Elizabeth Rhys Finney. Merle Insinga scanned much of the material. Preliminary proofreading of the text, a necessary but tedious task, was done by Merle Insinga, Pat Vandenberg, Ann Crimmins, Ann Broomhead, Claire Anderson, Deb Geisler, Lois Mangan, Paula Lieberman, Sue Kahn, Elisabeth Carey, and Rick Katze. George Flynn provided useful comments on the chronology. We thank you all!
