Great Sass: Providence Family Ties Series

Still. “I’ll tell Ari you said that.”

I had planned to have the baby and go home from the second I’d started thinking about my birthing plan. I’d like to blame that on the fact that I hadn’t experienced childbirth by that point, so I was talking out of my arse.

Now that I was ‘woke’ to it, there was no way in hell I was leaving until they said I could. It felt like a bomb had exploded down south, sure, but I was more concerned with knowing that my daughter was okay before I tried to go it alone without any medical experts to hand.

I’d just spent the last ten minutes taking photos of everything. Her feet, her toes, her hands, her fingernails, her belly, her nose, her mouth… I wanted pictures of all of it. I’d even taken one of her hand on mine, and one of it on Elijah’s so that we never forgot how small she’d been at one stage in her life.

“What are we calling her?” I said quietly so that I didn’t wake her up.

“Charing, as in the station in London?” he asked with a wink, but I kind of liked it.

Then I remembered a name I’d put on my list months ago because I loved the author, and it was Mum’s middle name but had vetoed thinking it was outdated.

Now that I knew what she looked like properly, it suited her.

  “What about Bronte?”

He looked up to make sure I was serious and then back down at her. “I like it.”

Picking her up, he held her close to his chest. “Hi, Bronte, I’m your daddy. Do you recognize my voice?”

He said it softly, and in the sweetest tone I’d ever heard him use, but still, she opened her eyes, glared at him, and started screaming her head off. As she took in a deep lungful of oxygen, she released another wail that was interrupted by the loudest burp I’d ever heard come out of a baby.

“Definitely doesn’t take after me, then,” I snickered.

Sitting down next to me, he cuddled me into his side with the arm that wasn’t holding Bronte. “She’s as beautiful and precious as her mum is, and you’re both mine.”

Laughter, love, and now life. I had it all.

“It’s just a shame she’s not going to get to meet all of her uncles, isn’t it, Bronte.”

I should probably send a text to them and warn them.

Still, we had a bigger problem.

“Elijah?” I called, loving how hesitant he was to take his eyes off Bronte.

  “Mmm?”

“We have a bigger problem,” I sighed. “My nan’s arriving at Orlando airport in the morning. She’s going to be pissed she missed this.”

Judging by the worried look on his face, having already witnessed the formidable tornado that was Phyllis Hastings, I’d taken his mind off his brothers demise.

  Or, so I thought.

“Tell me which brother it was, and we’ll send him to pick her up.”

  Acknowledgments

Okay, I have to say this: the dreams, it’s a legit thing.

Last year, I came across an article that discussed patients who had interactive dreams that were based on television and movie shows. One of the top ones involved cartoons. As someone who’s had dreams like this, it was actually a relief to discover it wasn’t just my whacky mind, but reading more about it, I just knew I was going to have to use it at some point.

So, if you have dreams like that, you’re not alone. Heck, I’ve even flown an X-wing against the Rebel Alliance, so you’re definitely not alone.

To the weird dreamers in the world: thank you for showing your existence so I didn’t feel weird.

And thank you, West Wickham. For years you were the base we came back to during posts, and I miss and love you hugely. I didn’t get to spend a lot of time living there, but I have so many memories crammed into the time I did. Oh, and thank you for having some great pubs, mainly the countryside ones where the beer gardens looked over the fields. And for the amount of cow pats I was pushed into by my brother between WW and Biggin Hill on our Sunday walks.

Nate: Thank you for all of your USCG help, but mostly for talking to me about losing your friend. I know you didn’t go through exactly what Elijah did with Cooper, but the emotional fallout and a lot of the circumstances were the same. We’ve discussed this, and you know that I get it after losing Claire, but opening something like that up for a book means the world to me. Thank you for letting me do it and for entrusting me with it. And terimah kasi for reading Great Sass ahead of time.

To the wax company: It wasn’t painless.

To the people who tried it: I Sadie feels your pain, trust me.

To the people who think about trying it: Don’t make the same mistakes I Sadie did.

To my neighbors: Sorry about the noise.

To lockdown: I hold you responsible. I Sadie wouldn’t have even thought about it normally.

To the word arse: I’ve never used you, you don’t come naturally to me. I feel like Sadie when she tried to say the word veterinarian when I try. But I gave it a go, and even though I still won’t use you verbally, thank you for popping up, especially during the wax scene. I don’t think I’ll ever see another waxing ad and not think of poor me Sadie.

To my son’s nose: I apologize for shoving tampons up you every time you bleed. You’ve got to admit the handy dandy light flow tampons work a treat, though, right? I don’t care if you don’t like it, it works like a charm. *chef’s kiss*

  About the Author

I’m a British author who grew up all over the world. My parents were diplomats, so we were posted to all of the corners of the earth and it was a blast. Some wouldn’t seem so awesome if you heard about them, but my parents always made it a fun experience and it molded my brother and I into who we are today.

I live in Wiltshire in the west country of the UK. At random times of the day, I’ll hear a moo from the fields around me, or get a whiff of that…uhhh…’country air’, and I love it! I might not have grown up in the UK, but I’m a British girl to the bone (regardless of the suspicious whiffs coming in from the fields).

I’m a single mother with a son who is nearing his teenage phase. Maybe he’s reached it early? Who knows. But he’s awesome and has a personality and sense of humor that I can only attribute to my family. We’re slightly bonkers, we have a wicked sense of humor and we find the positives in every situation. I’m so proud to be his mum and to watch him grow and mature.

Writing was something that I’d always done. I had a teacher in the third grade who always set us the task of writing a story and making it into a book every weekend. After I left school, I kept this up and wrote as often as I could or just plotted out books. This evolved into me taking the plunge and publishing my first book in 2016 and I’ve been typing ever since.

I’m proud to be an Indie Author, and I absolutely love writing out my crazy Providence characters and the more complex ones in my other series’. It doesn’t matter if it’s romantic comedy or something with more suspense – so long as it has a HEA I’ll do it!

I’ve got so many more planned, so the best is yet to come.
