ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This small book is not an academic review of the Gypsies, just a street-witness overview of their traditions, to better understand their origins in Old India. In the past, many gypsyologists felt these people had no traditions and that their origins could only be traced through their language and dialects. However, at least for me, their traditions and inherited professions have shed more light on their various origins than their language.

I am deeply indebted to those Roma, Sinti, Ashkali, and Kale with whom I’ve lived and associated with since 1963 for sharing with me their ancestral traditions. I would also like to thank Dr. Thomas Acton, O.B.E. Emeritus Professor of Romani Studies, University of Greenwich and presently curator, archive section, of the Digital Archive of the Roma, Berlin, Germany, for reading my manuscript and contributing several footnotes.
