Crimes of Fire (Wayward Fae Paranormal Prison Book 1)

Whether on purpose or not, Viktor’s body angled closer to mine. “We will.”
The warden stepped aside to allow the guards in to retrieve Faolan. “Thank you for helping, Tristan.”
The seelie gave a quick nod. “Of course. I’d do anything for Sloane.”
A lump lodged in my throat as my lids squeezed closed. Tristan was too good for me. He deserved better. I was damaged goods. My past had fractured my soul.
Viktor understood that. We were both broken.
I tugged on Viktor’s shirt to catch his attention. When he turned, I spoke in my head. Should we be worried? I quickly pulled up short. The last time I had referred to the two of us as we, he flipped out.
Viktor stared at me for so long that a giant pit of dread formed in my gut. Thinking we were connected in this was another mistake. Once again, I was on my own.
But when I stepped away, he tugged me back. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.
I was worried though—for so many reasons that had nothing to do with the shifters.
Chapter 31
Queen Isadora’s voice came over the line, instantly enveloping my body in hot and cold flashes. “Hello, Sloane. I’m glad you survived the attack from Cortland’s petulant offspring. And my brother helped save you. Again. You two must be getting closer.”
“Yes.” My disgust for this woman ran deeper than the Mariana Trench. I hated that she had control over me through my sister, using Jilly to make me kill an innocent guy while Isadora was the real murderer.
My throat clogged thinking of Viktor. I hadn’t seen him since yesterday in Faolan’s cell, after he had to leave with the warden.
“Are you still there, Sloane?” Her regal voice interrupted my thoughts. “You haven’t gotten too close to my dear brother, have you?”
“Of course not,” I lied. That was exactly what happened. The unseelie prince had stripped away all of my armor, and I didn’t know if I could ever get it back. I wasn’t only attracted to him. I cared about him. Thinking of snuffing out his life made me sick.
“Do not forget what is at stake.” Isadora’s threat sailed over the line crystal clear. “Your sister is counting on you.”
My hands curled into tight fists. I wanted to punch through the phone and strangle the unseelie queen. “You don’t have to remind me. I’ll do it when I’ve learned how to use these powers.” She didn’t know how much control I already had over them.
“You better get control of them fast. Sweet Jilly doesn’t have forever.”
The line disconnected, leaving me with her haunting words.
I slammed the phone back on the receiver so hard that a distinct crack resonated. Isadora had me by the figurative balls. I’d made a deal with the devil, and I had to face the consequences.
A guard met me at the door and escorted me to the cafeteria for dinner. I couldn’t eat, though. Invisible hands clutched my throat so hard I might pass out. How could I kill Viktor?
As we neared the entrance, my steps faltered and a zing zipped through my blood. Air caught in my lungs. He was close.
When I crossed the threshold, a pair of silver eyes instantly ensnared me. Viktor Hale sat at his table with an emotionless mask over his face.
Sloane.
His voice filtered through my mind and sent my heart crashing into my ribcage. Sharing his blood still had a powerful hold on us. He didn’t even know I’d acquired his icy magic. Would it fade? Would more side effects develop?
Viktor didn’t break the connection, but his face gave nothing away. I had no idea whether to go to him or to run as far and as fast as I could. Now that I’d destroyed the stone and fulfilled my end of the bargain, there was no reason for our truce.
Viktor’s hatred for my race wouldn’t simply fade. Would he become my tormenter again?
Killing him would be a lot easier if he did.
To be continued…
I had one job in Wayward Fae Penitentiary. Kill the merciless unseelie prince. Instead, we’ve been bound by blood, and there’s no escaping him…
