“No, I don’t think people change. I think you were like this all along. You just needed the right person to come along and show you that it’s okay to open up your heart. To let you know it’s safe to share your life with someone else, someone to let you know you don’t have to be alone. You were waiting for me,” I said, rubbing my nose into her hair lovingly.

“Someone is a little full of themselves, eh?” she laughed and pulled me onto her lap facing her.

Her blue eyes sparkled in the firelight, sending shockwaves of desire down between my legs.

“How come just looking at you turns me on?” I asked Emma.

“Because you know how good I can make you feel and how much pleasure you get out of touching me,” she replied, deftly slipping her hands between my thighs and quickly slipping a finger inside of me.

I gasped at the immediate sensation of raw lust her touch created. Our lips met in a passionate brawl for dominance over each other. I moved my left leg over her hips, straddling her pushing my hand past Emma’s shorts and into her moist folds. She moaned against my mouth, urging me to curl my fingers deep inside of her as my palm rubbed her throbbing clit.

Our chests pressed against one another, and I grabbed the back of her neck with my other hand for support. My fingers found the hair at the nape of her neck, and I pulled roughly, forcing Emma to expose her neck to me. I kissed her as we both thrust our fingers in and out of each other, finding a matching rhythm. Emma pushed her hips forward each time I entered her, and I followed her lead. We both panted and moaned quietly, aware of where we were and who could possibly hear our passionate noises.

Our lips met again, and Emma’s eyes fluttered open. Her sultry gaze and the clenching of her muscles told me she was close. I added another finger inside of her, and she did the same to me.

“Oh, yes, Mia,” Emma cried out.

The erotic tone to Emma’s voice was enough to send me crashing over the edge. The first wave of my climax unfolded deliciously through my belly as I continued to fuck Emma deeper with each thrust. She bit down on the strap of my tank top, barely avoiding a scream as her velvet creases clenched and released around my fingers. My whole body tingled, and we both slowly paused our rocking motions, savoring the sensual release in each other’s arms.

Panting, we looked at one another, smiling like two drunk college girls, and immediately we began giggling uncontrollably.

“Sorry to interrupt, but can I get you ladies anything before I head off to bed?” Asked Henrietta, one of Emma’s house staff members.

Emma and I continued to laugh even harder at the narrow miss of being caught by Henrietta.

“No... thank you, Henry. Have a good sleep, my dear. See you in the morning.” Emma replied, barely able to control her laughter.

There was a buzzing noise, and Emma continued to chuckle as she reached for her phone on the table next to us but stopped laughing abruptly.

  “What’s the matter?”

“It’s Detective Nash. He emailed that he wants all of Stuart’s employee records and to interview everyone that met with Stu the day he was fired as well as the woman who lodged the first complaint against him. It looks like I’ve got a lot of arrangements to make for next week.”

“Do you need me to help?” I asked, trying to be as supportive as possible. I was the reason she was in this mess, after all.

“No. We should keep you as far away from all of this as possible. We can’t make it look like you’re involved, or Nash and Paulson are going to get even more suspicious than they already are.”

“Did you hear what he said to me when we were leaving today?” I asked.

“Which part? About the unsettling items in Stuart’s apartment, that Stuart might be capable of violence, or his last comment for you to, ‘Be safe out there?’” Emma grimaced.

“All of it. I think we need to keep an eye out for those detectives. Something tells me they’re going to be watching us,” I replied, instinctively looking around.

“I agree, but I hope not for much longer.”

I looked at Emma questioningly. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“The Company worked up a plausible backstory with one of Stuart’s old girlfriends who filed a restraining order against him a few years back. She also happens to be an addict. The Company loves dealing with addicts, as we already know. I just didn’t think it would take this long for the cops to find the planted evidence and close the case. The longer it takes, the more the cops will dig, and The Company doesn’t want that at all. I wonder what’s taking so long. Give me a few minutes.” Emma gently pushed me off of her lap and walked away with her phone to her ear, eagerly talking in hushed tones.

I was a little frustrated Emma hadn’t shared this information with me earlier, but I understood her reasons. The less I knew, the better in this particular situation. So now that I felt completely useless, I decided to clean up our mess from dinner and the smores outside. Once I finished, I put the fire out and headed to my bedroom.

I hadn’t heard from Emma in some time and figured I might as well go to bed since it was after midnight. I brushed my teeth and dressed for bed before snuggling up under the covers.

Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, there was a soft knock at the door. Emma poked her head inside, smiling.

“Sorry I left you like that. I was dealing with some things that couldn’t wait. Do you mind if I sleep in here with you tonight? I enjoyed waking up next to you this morning, and my bed feels empty without you.”

I smiled and patted the empty spot next to me. Emma crawled into bed, and we held each other until we fell asleep.

The next morning, we woke up and the sun was shining brightly. Todd, Emma, and I enjoyed breakfast outside on the patio where Todd joked that we didn’t need to go on vacation this summer, we just needed to stay at Emma’s house. Of course, Emma said we were more than welcome, but I told him we were definitely going on a vacation somewhere. I needed to get out of North Carolina for a while.

“So, I know it’s Sunday guys, but I have a lot of work I have to get done today. I’ve set you both up to spend the day on a fishing charter at Lake Norman.”

Todd smiled from ear to ear. “That sounds like so much fun, doesn’t it, Mom?”

“Yes, it does,” I smiled back at him.

Emma reached her hand out to me over the table. I looked at Todd as he continued to shovel eggs and bacon into his mouth like it was going to run away if he didn’t eat his food as quickly as possible. I played with my fingernails a little, and Emma wiggled her hand at me again, giving me a pouty look. I gave her a crooked smile and placed my hand in hers, breathing in a sigh of relief when the world didn’t come crashing down at our public display of affection. This one simple act had made it official in my mind. Emma and I were a couple.

We finished our breakfast, and everyone went their separate ways. Emma was off to work, and Todd and I got showered and dressed for our fishing trip. The car arrived to pick us up, and Todd and I were off to the lake.

The water was beautiful, and the excursion was better than I could have wished for. Todd had a great time learning to fish from the guide, and we even caught some decent sized striped bass. The two largest fish were kept for us to bring back with us. They were going to be dinner that evening. I had never experienced eating fish I had caught that day, but I didn’t doubt that it was going to be incredible.

We headed home around five, and Todd and I both agreed that a nap was well deserved. Being out in the sun all day will wipe you out. I don’t know how the fishermen do it day in and day out.

Emma woke me around six-thirty, saying that dinner was going to be served soon, so I washed up and met her and Todd outside at the table. The seafood spread was a feast, and at the center of it all was the two fish Todd and I had caught.

We ate, we laughed, and we drank. We all had a wonderful time together. I couldn’t have been happier. Before we knew it, it was already eight o’clock, and I knew I ha
d to get Todd home. He had school in the morning, and Todd was already whining that he couldn’t wait for summer to start.

“Less than two more months, buddy, and summer will be here before you know it. For now, though, we really should get going. It’s a long drive,” I said glumly, not looking forward to a four-hour car ride.

Emma jumped up from her chair, announcing, “Hold that thought. I’ll be right back.” Before rushing off into the house.

Todd and I looked at each other confused.

“What is she cooking up now?” I asked.

Todd laughed at me. “I have no idea. She’s your girlfriend, but I can’t wait to find out. Emma always has the best surprises.”

Emma came back, grinning from ear to ear. “We’ve both been drinking, so driving is out of the question, but I was thinking... we do need to make sure Todd doesn’t get airsick in the helicopter, so he doesn’t puke all over his friends in a few weeks... Todd, pack your stuff. The chopper will be here in fifteen minutes!” she exclaimed.

Todd nearly tossed his seat behind him, he jumped up so fast. “You’re the best, Emma,” he said, hugging her tightly.

Todd ran around the table, kissing me on my head quickly before darting inside to pack his things.

“You really enjoy spoiling the hell out of him, don’t you?”

“I’ll never have kids, and the look of happiness on his face each time I surprise him makes me smile. What’s having all of this money really worth if you can’t spend it on making the ones you love happy?”

I let her comment about never having kids slide. She was only thirty-four, so she still had time. That was a conversation for another day, though.

“Yeah, well, let’s make sure we don’t turn him into a spoiled little brat, okay?”

“Oh, definitely not. We’ll kick his ass before we let that happen,” Emma joked as she pulled me in for a hug and kissed my face all over.

Todd was mesmerized watching the helicopter land in the back yard. His face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning as we climbed inside. Emma handed him a vomit bag just in case, and he waved her off at first, but when his stomach dropped during takeoff, he grabbed it from her hand, making us all laugh.

An hour later, we were landing at a small airport ten minutes away from Todd’s house, where an SUV was already waiting for us. Emma explained to him this is where his friends would have to meet up on the day of his party. The two were thick as thieves as they discussed more details for his birthday bash on the quick ride to his house.

As we rounded the corner onto his street, I saw blue and red flashing lights with several police vehicles all parked in front of Todd’s house.

Todd stopped his animated discussion with Emma as he sat up and took notice of the commotion outside.

“What’s going on?” he questioned as he pulled out his phone and dialed his father. The call went right to voice mail.

I put my arm around my son. “Don’t worry, sweetie. We’ll find out. I’m sure everything is okay. Emma, can you stay with Todd in the car? I’m going to try and see what’s going on.”

  “Sure. We’ll be right here.”

I hopped out of the truck and walked down the sidewalk filled with neighbors dressed in robes and pajamas, trying to get a look at the events happening on their street. I pushed my way through the onlookers and found an officer leaning against his car, trying nonchalantly to keep the looky-loos at bay.

  “Excuse me, sir?”

“Ma’am, you’ll have to step back.”

“No, sir, you don’t understand. I need to know what’s happening. My son lives here with my ex-husband. I was dropping my son off after spending the weekend with me, so I need to know what’s going on inside.”

“Do you or your son have any identification on you?”

“I have my driver’s license if you want it, but my son is only fifteen. The only ID he has is his school ID, and that’s inside the house. Is my ex-husband, Ben, okay?” I asked, becoming concerned that I didn’t see Ben or his wife Daisy anywhere.

I handed the officer my license, and he looked it over quickly before tucking it in a strap over his chest.

“Where’s your son now, Miss. Blackburn?”

“He’s back there,” I said, pointing down the street. “The black SUV. He’s waiting with a friend of mine and our driver.”

“Okay, we can leave him there for a few minutes, but can you come with me please?”

I followed the cop closer to the house, and he handed me and my license off to another officer explaining who I was and that my son was parked down the street. I still had no clue what was going on, but there were police everywhere. I got a terrible sinking feeling that this couldn’t be for anything positive.

The second officer walked me inside, and the house was in complete shambles. Every piece of furniture was cut open and tossed around, glass was shattered across the floor, and it looked like every piece of paper Ben owned was littered over every surface.

Ben and Daisy were in the kitchen, talking with the police when I entered the room. Ben jumped up and grabbed me angrily by my arms, and the officers quickly pulled him off of me.

“What the hell did you do, Mia? What did you do?” Ben shouted as the police restrained him.

Daisy just sat at the table, crying.

“What do you mean, what did I do? What the hell happened here?” I asked, utterly confused by Ben’s unexpected hostile reaction.

“Someone broke into my home looking for something. They stole all of Daisy’s jewelry, my computers, and anything else of value they could get their grubby little hands on. But look at this place! They were searching for something specific. Who did you tell, and what did you tell them, damn it?” Ben screamed.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Who would I tell about what?” I asked as it clicked in my head. He must have been talking about his shady business.

I hadn’t told a single soul what I knew about Ben’s company. If someone found out and wanted to steal proof, or money, or something else of great value from Ben, then that was on him. I had nothing to do with this mess. I had my own problems to focus on before worrying about his shit.

“I know you had something to do with this — you or your new friend Emma Cross. It’s very convenient that Emma reached out to me asking for an unscheduled visit with Todd this weekend only to have this happen when you knew Todd would be out of the house.”

“Ben, I honestly had no idea Todd was coming to visit. It was a surprise to me too. But Emma and I had nothing to do with any of this. I’m only here to drop Todd off.”

The police watched our interaction with intense stares, soaking in the entire conversation. It was probably not a good idea for Ben to be shouting about how he knew someone was looking for something, and that this probably wasn’t just a random burglary. Now the cops were going to look into him further to try and establish a motive. I put my hands up, trying to calm him down, and it seemed to be working. “Ben, listen to me. I had nothing to do with this. I think you need to sit down and think hard about what you’re saying right now.” My words seemed to help him understand our audience better as his face changed from anger to oh shit in a fraction of a second. “Sit down and think. Who knew you were going to be out of the house tonight? Who might have had a grudge against you that’s capable of doing something like this?”

Ben sat back in his chair, and the cops let go of his arms. “You’re right, Mia. I’m sorry. I don’t know what I was saying. I’m just angry and frustrated. Now that you mention it, there have been some older kids hanging around the corner by the liquor store lately. Maybe they could have done this. They stopped me the other day and asked me to break a hundred for them. It was clearly a fake bill, so I told them to get lost. They cursed at me, but I ignored them and went inside. When I came back out, they had thrown their cigarettes all over my car and pissed on my door handles.”

One of the officers spoke up, “Did you file a report, Mr. Grimsley?”<
br />
Ben shook his head. “No. I went back inside the store, got some napkins to wipe off my door handle, and took my car to get it washed before I went home. They obviously knew my car, though. So they could have easily found out where I lived and did this.”

“It’s a possibility.” The officer responded. “We’re going to let the forensics team finish dusting for prints, and you can finish making a record of what you know was stolen tomorrow. Right now, I’d like to get you down to the station, Mr. Grimsley. I’m going to have an officer get the security footage from the liquor store so you can review it, and maybe we can pin down these suspects to track down their whereabouts this evening.”

“Excuse me? What about our son, Todd? He has school tomorrow morning, and I assume he can’t stay here, but can he grab a few things from his room that he may need and see if anything was taken from his bedroom?” I asked.

“Sure. I’ll have an officer escort you up there with him, and no, since this is an active crime scene, I don’t expect anyone will be staying here tonight.”

I redirected my questions to Ben. “Ben, is it okay if I take Todd to a nearby hotel then? I’ll make sure he gets to school tomorrow, and we can coordinate the living situation from there.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s best. Text me what hotel you’re at, and I’ll have Daisy get us a room there too. I know you have a big important job to get back to,” he quipped.

Ben, forever the asshole, even when I’m trying to help. Some things never change.

“This is our son we’re talking about. I’m worried about him, not work. I’ll text you the name of the hotel. Best of luck finding your friends on the security tape,” I replied with a twinge of resentment in my voice as I turned to leave the room.

I briefly explained what happened to Todd before we entered the house, but he was still shocked when he saw the aftermath of the home invasion. Todd hugged his father, and it was nice to see it was just me Ben was an asshole toward. Daisy couldn’t stop crying about her jewelry being taken and her clothes being destroyed, which frustrated me beyond words. I’ll never understand what Ben sees in that woman beyond her perky tits and great ass.
