Beatrice waited until Riya was almost out of the restaurant before she stood up as well.

  “Be careful,” Dorothy said.

Beatrice brushed her hand across Dorothy’s shoulders as she passed behind her, already focused on her target.

“What do you think?” Dorothy asked, once they were alone.

Trafalgar said, “I think it’s plausible. Given everything we’ve seen and experienced. She had my journal. And we can’t deny that the past few years have been, ah, odd.”

“Are you talking about the Minotaur, or the time I spent with an ancient pharaoh living in my body?”

Trafalgar smirked. “Take your choice. If she’s lying in an attempt to make us turn against magic for whatever reason, going along with her plan could be dangerous. There are portions of society which believe using magic is consorting with the Devil. She could be one of them with an unusually elaborate scheme.”

Dorothy nodded. “Or... she could be telling the truth. She did know about the Pratear, and she had your journal.”

“That device.” Trafalgar shook her head in wonder. “It was all I could do not to stab her hand with a fork and run from the room with it. 1934. Over a decade of my own writing.”

  “If it was authentic.”

  “Yes, of course. If.”

They sat silently. After a moment, Dorothy picked up her water glass and extended it toward Trafalgar.

“We’ll discuss this with the Society later. For now, let us enjoy our afternoon tea in celebration of a successful mission.”

Trafalgar tapped her glass against Dorothy’s. “Hear, hear. Besides, if what we just learned is true, time is something we have in abundance.”

“Indeed. I look forward to learning how we fill those years.”

Dorothy winked and took a sip of her water, then turned back to the menu. Beatrice would return soon, and her report would hopefully give them a better idea as to whether or not they could trust Riya Lennox. They would enjoy their tea, and eventually they would bring up the matter of time travel and overreliance on magic to the Society. But all of that was for later. She wasn’t going to rush into anything, and she wasn’t going to let a lovely afternoon go to waste on idle speculation.

For the moment, she had much more important matters on which to focus.
