“Ach my, girls. I almost don’t want any of you to grow up. There are times in your life that you will never forget. What fun times you have had living here!”
“I guess,” Mandy said crossly.
“Yes, I suppose,” Debbie said, trying to be polite.
They grumbled their way up the stairs to their rooms, leaving Mam chuckling alone in her platform rocker.
Lizzie lay awake long after Debbie had drifted off to sleep. She put her hands behind her head, locked her fingers together, and stared at the ceiling, watching the pattern of shadows across it.
It was true what Mam said. Her life was carefree, filled with loving friends and family. She didn’t want to grow up, either. But she supposed slowing down time was as impossible as harnessing the tides of the sea. You could never tell what lay before you, but she wondered if happiness didn’t depend a lot on your eagerness to see what lay around the bend. She suspected the flow of her life was as inevitable as the current of the river.
With a sigh of contentment, she thought her prayer to God before her breathing became deep and even.
