Nadia's Salvation

by K. A Knight

We clean up quickly and fix my hair before opening the door to see a little old lady there with a stick, a smile on her face as she winks at us knowingly. “Good wedding?” she asks, and I bite down on my lip to stop my laughter.

“Yes, ma’am,” I reply, as Keanu twines our hands and pulls us away. Once she closes the door, we both lean against the wall, laughing.

“Oh God, Brat, you dirty girl getting us in trouble with a little old lady,” he teases, before kissing me softly. “We better get back, the speeches are starting, but I love you.”

“I love you too,” I whisper.

Listening to the speeches, I turn to Keanu to see his eyes already on me. For the past year, I’ve been learning about guns, fighting, computers, you name it. He never pushed what I wanted to do, just lets me explore, but he doesn’t know I had a plan. I know he wonders where I belong in his life...where we’re going.

It’s certainly not back to civilian life, could you imagine me in a nine to five job? No, my place is at his side, partners. Donald agreed a long time ago, Keanu is the only one who doesn’t know yet.

“Spidey?” I murmur and he grins at me, so lovingly and hungrily that my breath catches. “I want to be your partner.”

His brows furrow in confusion and I grin. “Donald already agreed. Like I said, you aren’t getting rid of me. Looks like I’m an official spy now, so what do you think? You and me, taking down the bad guys?” I ask nervously, searching his face.

I shouldn’t have been worried, he breaks into a wide grin. “Are you sure that’s what you want? It’s not an easy life or job, it takes its toll...”

“But it comes with one hell of a view.” I wink at him, then get serious. “I’m sure, you and me, Spidey. Partners, you watch my back, I watch yours.”

“I couldn’t think of anything better, Brat,” he says seriously.

Laughing, I lean forward and kiss him.

Partners. Oh, this is going to be one hell of an adventure...

  Nadia

Bullets whiz by as I duck behind the barrel, the shooter up high on the metal bridge. “Two of them, automatics,” I pant, looking over at Keanu who grins at me, his own gun in hand. We usually work the...darker jobs. Behind the scenes, I call it, the computer and investigative work, and leave this type of job to the other agents, but it’s our anniversary and we wanted to do something special, so of course taking down a drug lord seemed like a good idea.

We were supposed to sneak in and go all badass on them, but someone—not looking at any man in particular—got all handsy in the woods and stumbled into a tripwire. Men, I swear.

“Okay, I’ll take them down, watch my back.” He grins, his eyes smouldering as he looks at me. “Happy anniversary, Brat.” He pulls a box from his pocket and I squeak, the bullets still hitting our defence, but I don’t care.

Yanking the box from him, I open it to see a small handgun bedazzled with “Brat” along the edge, making me laugh. “Spidey.” I shake my head. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Brat, more than the world itself, now let’s take these fuckers down so I can rip those sexy as fuck leather pants away and show you how much.” He winks and ducks around the barrel, only firing twice, but the gunfire stops instantly. This man.

We work together to clean up the compound. Over the last few years, my fighting and gun work has gotten better until even Keanu said I’m almost as good as he is. I’ll never be as good at the computer work, but that’s okay, I’m better with the people side of the operation and working on the surveillance, including cameras...guess the degree I never finished came in useful after all.

We drop by to see Scarlett and Max a lot, their new home is beautiful...well, not exactly new, since they have been in it for a year now. All happily married...with a baby on the way, not that he knows yet. I can’t wait to see his reaction when she tells him tomorrow at the party.

When we’re finished, we grin at each other across the space, bodies spread between us, open crates lining the warehouse filled with bagged white drugs. “Good job, Spidey,” I tease, and he narrows his eyes on me.

“Better run, Mrs. Grey.” I widen my eyes in fake horror.

“God, no, I’m keeping my last name. Fuck, yours sounds like a dirty book,” I taunt, the ring he gave me flashing on my left hand. It’s bigger than my new fucking gun, the guy loves to spoil me, finally throwing himself into this ‘love business,’ as he calls it. Plus, it works as a tracking chip and to deter other men—his words, not mine.

  Men.

We only have four weeks until the wedding, one that Scarlett mostly planned while I was working. She’s been experiencing bad morning sickness and finding it hard to work. I’m surprised Max hasn’t noticed yet, men are really clueless though.

I can’t wait to say “I do” in front of all our friends and claim this man as mine forever. Who knew our hate would turn into such love? I wonder if Donald and Amelia will be there. Who knows what’s going on with those two. After everything went down, I figured they would have sorted it out, hell, maybe they have? That man is full of secrets and she’s a force to be reckoned with, even I wouldn’t mess with her, though I’m happy to call her my friend now. But that’s not my story to tell...

“Ready to become mine?” I goad, as he draws near and scoops me up, kissing me hard.

  “I always was.”
