Be Your Savior: The Be Yours Trilogy #2

“Holy…” I stammered, suddenly feeling a rush of adrenaline that helped me sit up and collect my thoughts. I bit my lip hesitantly, glancing at Seth who still looked stunned. He had his hands in his lap, and he was absentmindedly twirling his wedding band and raking his lip piercing with his teeth. “Um… are you okay?” I asked, gently reaching out to touch his shoulder.

Seth imperceptibly nodded once, but his stunned expression didn’t change. Oh shit… this is not good. This is not good… this isn’t what we planned… this isn’t what he wanted…

The doctor gave me a questioning look and nodded towards him, and I shrugged. “Are you sure—I’m pregnant? Really?”

“Quite sure, Mrs. Archer,” He replied. “Since it’s slow… would you like to see it?”

  I nodded quickly.

“All right, I’ll be right back with the machine.” As the doctor left, I reached out to grab Seth’s shoulder. He jumped slightly. “Seth…?” I asked brushing the hair out of his eyes. “Look at me.”

Hesitantly, he turned his head. His breath was rapid, and he had paled severely. “Oh shit you’re mad…”

He shook his head slowly, just once. He set a hand on my leg. “Just… stunned. Give me a minute.”

I nodded slowly, and when the doctor returned with a machine with a screen and instructed me to lay back and lift up my shirt. He turned it on and it beeped and made a bunch of noises before turning fully on. He squirted my stomach with a warm gel. “Just a little bit of pressure, shouldn’t hurt.” And he moved the probe over my bare stomach in purposeful motions. Nothing appeared on the screen until…

“There.” In my upper abdomen he pressed just a bit harder, and an image on the screen, that shifted and moved slightly. “There it is.”

“It?” Seth asked suddenly, sounding alarmed.

“We don’t know yet. It will be another oh…twelve weeks before you can tell?” The doctor said. He typed a few things on the keyboard and something spat out of a printer nearby. He tore it off and handed me the smooth paper. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. The “blob” was circled, and said only “baby”…but that was enough.

“You’ll need to see a specialist, but by my calculations, looks like due date is around… April 22?” The doctor said, glancing at us both in turn. Seth still was motionless, but my lip gently trembled.

I couldn’t believe it. Here was my name…Jessalie Archer…and here was a picture of my baby.

  Our. Baby.

The doctor coughed, bringing us back to the present. “Well… if there are no questions, you’re free to leave. Please call and get yourself schedule in OB/GYN as soon as possible. From everything I can tell everything looks totally fine but they can tell you more and give you a better due date. Is…everything going to be okay, Mr. Archer?” He asked, eyeing Seth carefully.

“Huh? Oh yeah,” he replied blandly.

“Well…if you don’t have any other questions… you’re free to leave. Call us if the vomiting persists, but eat a bland diet in the meantime, it’ll help keep things settled,” he said. He turned to leave but paused, offering me a little smile. “Congrats again, Mrs. Archer. I wish you all the best.”

  “Thanks…”

  And we were left alone.

“Well,” Seth stood suddenly. “I guess we should go if you’re okay?”

“Seth…” I said, pleadingly. He took my hand to help brace me, I still felt weak, but the sudden news gave me a bit of strength to walk. At least enough to get home.

“Just…” he said shortly. “Let’s get home. And then… yeah.”

“Okay…” I nodded, and he led me out of the hospital and into the car, where we drove in absolute silence. It was fully dark now, and the shadows from the streetlights only enhanced his negative expression.

I clutched the single photo against my chest and held my eyes shut, silently praying for him to be okay. This was unexpected…what was this going to do to us? I knew he wouldn’t bail but… would he resent me? The baby? It wasn’t my fault—he heard himself it was the fault of the manufacturer—but still. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t have a ton of resentment.

“It must have happened while we were in Florida, huh?” He broke the silence as we pulled into the driveway and he put the car in park.

I considered this. “I… think so.”

“Uh-huh…” With a sigh, Seth got out of the car, waited for me to follow and we walked side by side into the house. He didn’t say anything until he went to the fridge, grabbed a pop, took a long drink and re-emerged, where I stood nervously by the sofa, trying to gauge his reaction.

His eyes tracked to my hands. “Can… I see it?”

“Of course.” I quickly thrust the little photo at him, and he took it, looking over it carefully, silently without expression before looking up at me.

“So it’s a honeymoon baby?” he said, just a hint of a smile quirking the corner of his lips.

  “I guess?”

He blew out a breath, slowly, and ran over to me, taking me in his arms for a huge hug. I felt the relief sink into my pores as he held me tightly, just swaying back and forth for a moment or two before he looked up at me with a huge grin.

“This is for real, right? This is really happening? You’re… pregnant?”

“I suppose so…” I said in a small voice, looking away. His sudden exuberance was a little… unsettling.

  “Holy shit.”

I looked up and he was grinning. Actual ear-to-ear grinning.

“You’re okay with this?” I asked, shocked.

“Okay? This is… well it’s unexpected but the best things always are, huh?” Seth cupped my face in his hands and crashed his mouth against mine, not caring that my mouth probably tasted disgusting or that I looked like shit. I melted into him, relieved.

His hand roamed down and rested on my stomach, about the spot where the probe took the photo. He blinked over and over, and I watched his eyes mist over. “Jessie…”

“You’re not mad?” I asked hesitant, and he looked blindsided.

“Mad? No, I was just processing. I could never be mad. I didn’t expect it but… hell, I didn’t expect you and look how well that turned out, huh?” He said, grinning. “I cannot believe this.”

  “Surprise?”

He laughed warmly. “Yeah I guess. So… we’re doing this?”

  “Doing what?”

  “The baby thing?”

  “Uh… don’t think there’s a choice,” I retorted, with a chuckle.

“Okay fine. I guess you’re right,” Seth said, with an awkward laugh. He raked his hand through his hair, ruffling the top of it, while he eyed the photo in this hand for a moment, and then turned back to me, beaming. “I still hope she has your eyes.”

I melted into a relieved grin and threw myself against him—probably a little too hard because he let out a surprised grunt but didn’t hesitate to hold me. “She?”

  “Or he,” he added, laughing.

“Uh-huh. I still hope he has yours,” I replied, looking up at him with reverence.

“Mine?” He frowned. “Why do you want him to have the eyes of a monster?”

“I don’t. I want him to have the eyes of the most amazing guy I’ve ever known,” I said, wrapping my hand around his neck and pulling him down for a kiss. It wasn’t hot or sultry but warm and full of emotion and when he broke it he leaned in and whispered into my ear,

“I love you so much. I’ll love both of you, I promise.”

  “I love you too.”

I didn’t know how it was possible, but Seth surprised me every day. I just hoped that whatever other surprises that lay in store for us in the future were just as wonderful as he is.

  To be continued…

  About the Author

Lizzie Fox is really the not-so-secret pen name of Sariah Skye. Why the pen name then if it’s not a big secret? Besides the fact that she’s a bit whack-a-doo, really, it was Sariah’s way of paying tribute to her best friend that passed away very suddenly in 2015. Sariah’s friend didn’t get her happy-ever-after, so this was her way of hopefully giving her many.

And in memory of the real Lizzie, any Lizzie Fox story is going to be full of heart, celebrating love in all its forms, complete with satisfying happy endings. Lizzie Fox intends to feature relationships of all types from male/female romance, male/male, female/female, reverse harem (which she already does paranormally), polyamorous, ménage—whatever her characters have her do today or tomorrow. Because whether she’s named Lizzie Fox or Sariah Skye, the author believes that LOVE IS LOVE and it is all beautiful. Lizzie Fox is contemporary romance, no fantasy elements.

Sariah lives in southern Minnesota with her patient and totally lovely husband, son, and daughter (yes she’s totally sucking up to them now) who pick up the slack when her characters yell in her head too loudly and need to be put down in writing now. She loves wine, coffee, carbohydrates of all kinds, shiny objects, Star Trek, Doctor Who and all things sarcastic. Well actually, she really hates it.

She is an outspoken advocate of the LGBTQ+ community and mental health/suicide awareness, and hopes that one day she can do so much more for people who need a voice. As a long time survivor of massive depressive disorder she understands what it’s like to feel dark and down, and hopes her stories either give people an outlet to escape, feel better, or find someone to relate to them.

You can find Lizzie/Sariah on Facebook, Twitter, or her private group, Sariah Skye’s Shenanigan Squad.
