The Child of Auschwitz: Absolutely heartbreaking World War 2 historical fiction

Page 21

by Lily Graham

In the early period of the existence of the women’s camp, babies born there were put to death, regardless of their ethnicity, without being entered in the camp records.

Babies born to Jewish mothers in Auschwitz were put to death until November 1944, when the mass extermination of the Jews came to a halt.

Records show that at least seven hundred children were born in Auschwitz-Birkenau. To date only a handful are known to have survived.

  Acknowledgements

I couldn’t have written this novel without the guiding hand of my incredible editor, Lydia Vassar-Smith. Thank you so much for all that you’ve done in bringing this story to life, pointing me in the right direction, and always with such a kind heart. I am so incredibly fortunate to work with you.

I never meant to write a story about Auschwitz. I’d been trying desperately to make headway with the other novel I was meant to write, and encountered writer’s block for the first time, when I came across the story of a woman whose mother had been told she would never fall pregnant after being in a concentration camp. The idea of a child born out of such darkness caught hold of me and just would not let go, and every time I tried to write that other book, the words refused to come. I looked up other survivor stories, and then read biographies, and before I knew it, I realised this was the story I needed to write – and so had to write my editor a letter to that effect. Incredibly, she said yes. The only trouble was now I had to write a story that tested me beyond anything else I’d ever done before. Sh
e held my hand, even as I doubted myself and patiently coaxed me through the other side, step by step. My husband did the same.

I never meant to write this story, but I feel incredibly honoured to have done so, so that others like me may know more about the remarkable women who experienced one of the most horrific periods in history, and survived. I can only hope that you will forgive any inaccuracies that may have occurred in the process.

My deepest, heartfelt thanks to the team at Bookouture for their enormous support over the years. It takes a village to bring a book out to the world, but only one person’s name gets to be on the cover. Thank you so much to the amazing team who have helped and supported me, fixed my grammar, designed the beautiful covers, and generally made me very proud to work with them.

Thank you to my friends and family for always being there with a supportive ear and a kind word.

Last and especially not least, thank you to you, the readers and bloggers who have shared your support and kindness for my writing over the years – I couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you to all my wonderful readers who have sent me tweets and checked in on me making sure I was still alive while I was AWOL from social media, writing this novel, such as the marvellous Kathy Schaffer. I am blessed to have your support.
