“It’s because you’re interested in her. Ask her out, what harm could it do?”

  Chapter Five

  MADISON

Nerves could not even accurately explain the absolute circus that was going on in my chest every time the thought of Will popped into my mind. I was terrified he was my new boss and was going to remember who I was and fire me on the spot. I had been having nightmares about how it would go.

He would saunter handsomely in the room, his face calm as he turned toward me. After recognition hit him he would fling a glass of wine in my face, and then everyone would laugh at me. Then, he would yell out ‘You’re Fired,’ in front of everyone watching.

The loud ring of my phone shook me from the thoughts as I continued to jog down 4th avenue admist my daydream. I shook my head trying to erase thoughts of Will from my mind. I’m not sure why a random jerk from a club was plaguging me so much so I figured a longer run this morning would help.

I decided to take the longer route this evening after work which I liked to call the scenic route that led from my apartment and down passed the firehouse and police station down the street from me towards the little forest spot on the outside of the city and past the cute little cabin before turning back around and heading back.

As I was nearing the fire station as I did when I ran every morning I noticed the placard on the outside said Fire House #14. It sounded familiar and I couldn’t quite place it until I remembered Louise stated the other day that it was the station Will worked out. He was a firefighter, she said.

“Shit.” I muttered to myself. I refused to change my route. I had been running this route for years. I was used to it and I liked it. “That’s fine, I’ll just run by and keep to myself.”

I glanced toward the open garage door of the station house as I ran by and didn’t see anyone near the trucks until I ran into a massive wall only to look up to see Will Silver standing there, blocking my path.

  “You again.”

“Yes, it’s me again.” I said brushing the dirt off my shorts as I stood up. I refused to let him get to me again. All I had to do is say hello and be on my way. No use prolonging the torture because it didn’t have to be tortourous if I didn’t let it.

“Hey, how are you?” I asked.

“Fine, how’s the new job?” he replied.

  “It’s great, I’m having a blast.”

Great. Did I just say that a little too enthusiastically?

“I’m glad. Well, I’ll let you get back to your running. I have to get these groceries into the fridge.”

“Oh, you do the shopping for the station?” I found myself asking.

“Sometimes. We take turns with kitchen duty, although some manage to weasel their way out of it.” he laughed slightly.

So he was capable of telling a joke.

“Well I ought to be going. I need to finish my run, before it gets too dark I usually run in the mornings but I wanted to run longer and can’t do that or I’ll be late to work so I’m running later today.”

“Yeah, you don’t want to be late to work. Tony can be a real slave driver sometimes.”

  Another joke. Nice.

“Thanks for the tip.” I said.

“You’re welcome. It was nice meeting you the other day at the office.”

“Oh, it was nice meeting you too.” I said, looking up at his big eyes and handsome face, forgetting for a moment who I was talking to.

“You go running every day past here?” he asked suddenly.

“Yes, I do. I’ve been running past here every day for the past few years. Do you run?”

  “Yes I do.”

“If you want, you can join me some time.”

“I’m off in a bit I just have to put these groceries away, I can join you right now.”

  “Right now?” I asked.

  “Yeah.”

  “Sure, okay.”

  Chapter Six

  WILL

As I jogged along behind Madison, I couldn’t help but catch a glance at her absolutely amazing body. She looked like she practically glided on the sidewalk with her long and slender legs, her hips moved just right.

I have got to stop thinking about her this way. If anything happened it would be temporary anyway. I didn’t need anymore complications.

I ran faster, keeping up with her pace until we ended up passing by my cabin, “This little cabin is usually where I stop and turn around and head back to my apartment.”

“I hope you don’t mind but I need to grab some water really quick. It’s been a while since I’ve gone running and I’m a little dehydrated. Do you want some water?” I asked.

“This is your cabin?” she responded, looking surprised that I lived in a cabin and not a regular apartment or house in the city.

“Yes, I love it here. It’s nice and peaceful besides the occasional runner or hiker. Do you want to come inside?”

“Sure, I could use some water.”

I opened the door for Madison and she walked around the room her her hands clasped in front of her, and her eyes scanning the large paintings on the walls.

As I went to the kitchen to grab a couple of bottles of water, I watched Madison as her curiosity took hold. She stared around the room looking at different paintings, various framed remnants from my achievements when I was younger, and stopping at the mantle where dozens of pictures of Benson and my mom sat.

Happy memories of a life lost. As she perused the framed photo albums of what I now refer to as, my past life, her shoulders grew a little tense.

“When will your wife be home?” Madison asked uncomfortably.

“Oh,” I said realizing what she thought. “I’m not married.”

“Is this your son?” she said picked up one of the picture frames of Benson.

  “Yes, that’s my son Benson.”

“Oh, where is he right now?” she asked.

“He’s with his mother. His foster mother I mean.” I said as I handed her over the bottle of water.

  “Foster mother?” she asked confused.

“When he was younger, his mother took off at a time where I was incapable of taking care of him. I had to make the tough decision of giving him up to Child Protective Services so that they could place him with a loving family that could take care of him.”

“So you haven’t seen him since?”

“I have. Fortunately his foster parents are kind enough to let me keep in contact with him because they’re hoping that one day I’ll want my son back but he could be placed with a permanent home at any point.”

“You don’t want your son back?” she asked curiously.

“It isn’t as if I don’t want him back. I’m incapable of taking him back. I’m at the station four days straight…I…”

Madison looked up at me with curiosity, interest and empathy Suddenly a warmth heated through my chest and I felt like I could no longer control my urge to press my lips against hers. I brushed the hair from her shoulder and stepped closer, both our breath’s deepening.

I took her by the shoulders, and pressed my lips hard against hers. Her shoulders tensed at the surprise and then relaxed, leaning into my body. Without parting lips, I took her bag and sat it on the chair next to us, moving her back against the wall. She whimpered as I cupped her breasts with my hands, and ran my tongue down her neck.

“So you don’t have a wife or girlfriend that lives with you?” Her breathless voice was arousing, and I nibbled on her collarbone.

“No, I’m not married and I’m not seeing anyone.” I said between brushings of her skin with my lips.

“Oh, good,” she whispered, throwing her arms around my neck and rubbing her body against mine.

As if a spell were set upon us, we ripped at each other’s clothes, trying to get them off as quickly as possible. I pulled Madison’s skirt down and tossed it across the chair before unbuttoning her blouse and roughly pulling it down over her shoulders, trapping her hands against her body.

  She playf
ully struggled as I held her still, kissing the tops of her heaving breasts. Finally, she broke free, and her hands immediately pulled on my belt, and unzipped my pants, allowing them to fall to the floor. She rubbed against my throbbing member as if she feverishly wanted more, driving me absolutely crazy.

I unclasped her bra and slid her panties down, standing back for just a moment to look at her amazing body before leaping forward and pulling one leg up and wrapping it around my waist. She tugged at my boxers as I held her back, grinding against her wet mound, listening to whispers of moans in my ear. As I moved my hand down and pushed my fingers inside of her, she clutched on to me crying out in pleasure. As I let my fingers get her closer and closer, knowing my own strength once inside of her may be minimal, I kept my eyes locked with hers.

Before I could shift positions, she put her leg down and jumped up, wrapped herself around me, and slid her hands down, grasping my rock-solid manhood. I moved forward pressing her back against the wall and slid into her. She gasped loudly as I began to thrust, gripping her butt with both hands and using the wall for leverage. She escalated closer and closer to orgasm with every thrust until suddenly, her head flew backward, and she moaned loudly. The warmth of her body and the sound of her pleasure set me off, and I began to push into her faster and faster. When I reached my peak, I pushed in hard and groaned into her neck.

I sat there for a moment, collecting my breath until finally, my legs became too weak, and I gently put her down, keeping her arms wrapped around my neck and kissing her softly.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” I whispered into her ear.

“Don't apologize. I should get back to my apartment anyway. It’s getting late.”

I got dressed quickly, leaving my jacket and tie thrown over the chair. Madison smiled as she pulled her clothes back on. It almost felt as if my moment with Madison had passed. I wanted to say something, anything, to show it was unbelievable but I didn’t know what I should say so I chose to say nothing at all.

I felt like slapping myself in the head as she opened my front door, leaving no more chances for me to make her feel comfortable about what just happened or if I would see her again.

  Chapter Seven

  MADISON

My fingers tapped nervously on the keyboard, and the backspace had become my best friend. Will should be here any minute, and my nerves were all over the place. I couldn’t help but hope he wanted to see me again, but I also knew this was a weird situation but fortunately for me he called Louise to get my office number because he wanted to see me again.

The first week on the job and I end up in bed with my boss’ friend. What was I thinking? I hope it wasn’t the kind of thing where Will told my boss that we slept together and then I’d get told that it was a conflict of interest before I got fired.

As I rested my head against the palm of my hand, I looked up to see my boss walk through the back-office door and smile at the employees around him. He looked like he was in a good mood.

I straightened up in my chair and crossed my legs, hoping to catch his attention. Any indication on whether I was fired or not.

“Madison, could you come in here,” Mr. Brighton called out from the office.

I jumped up from my chair and frantically closed my files, probably looking like a complete mad woman. I straightened my black power suit with wide legged pants and attempted to casually walk around the desk and to his door. I stood in the doorway peering in at him who was going over files.

  “Come in,” he said, waving.

“Yes, sir. I asked nervously. “How are you today?”

“Huh? Oh fine. Fine,” he said with a cold tone, brushing off my question. “Madison…”

  “Yes?” I said enthusiastically.

“Can you clean the file room out this afternoon, it’s already a mess. I know it’s out of your job description but my clerk is out sick today,” he said, pausing as he looked up at me. For a moment, I thought he was going to tell me he knew about me and Will but he didn’t.

“Sure,” I said turning and walking to the door.

“Oh, and Madison,” he called out. “Could you close the door behind you? Thanks.”

As soon as I closed his office door, I exhaled deeply. All of the tension rolled off my shoulders. He didn’t know and thankfully Will wasn’t the gossiping type. I needed some air.

When I walked into the bathroom it was empty, so I went into the last stall, closed the door, and leaned against the cold tile walls. As I stood quietly, fighting back a mixture of anger and tears, two of the associates walked in, talking loudly.

“Did you guys see that hottie today. He looked quiet chipper.” the one woman stated.

  “Which hottie?” the other asked.

“The one that visited Mr. Brighton the other day, he was here again today.”

“He was here again today? Can’t believe I missed him. I wonder what his name is. Do you suppose he’s a client?”

“No he isn’t. I grilled Louise about him and she said he’s a personal friend of Mr. Brighton’s which is probably why we don’t see him all that often. Anyway, he looked all happy.”

“He probably got laid last night, we all know how men get chipper when they get lucky.”

“According to Louise, he’s very much single and a fireman. The last girl he dated was for like a few months,” she pointed out. “Some amateur model or something. Rumor has it that he’s some big player, he only dates women for a few months before they try to get serious and then he dumps them.”

“Ooh, a fireman. Player or not, I’d still like to get a piece of that.” one of the women said as they giggled and made their way back out of the bathroom.

As if those words were echoing through the tile room, anger began to rise in my throat. This is the second time in one week I wanted to punch Will Silver in the face. I let my rage cool and straightened my dress.

“Fine, if he that’s how he was going to play the game and just use me for sex until he got tired of me enough to dump me than that’s precisely what I’ll do before he does it to me.” I muttered to myself as I put on some lip-gloss and headed to the file room where he had banished me for the day.

By the time the clock hit five, I was tossing the last of the shredded paperwork and grabbing my purse from my desk. I walked casually to the elevator not wanting to seem like I was running from the building.

I got in the elevator and just as the doors were about to close a hand stopped them. Will smiled and climbed into the elevator next to me, pressing the Lobby button. We stood silent for several floors.

“Nice to see you again,” Will said, a joking tone to his voice. “There are only so many excuses I can give Tony just so I can see you again. I don’t visit Tony that often, so he’s starting to get suspicious.”

Everything in my being wanted to collapse into his smooth little way of weaseling back into my attention, but I bit my tongue and stayed facing the elevator doors. Several seconds went by, the dinging of the passing floors echoing through the small space. When we came to a stop, I kept my face toward the opening doors.

“Yep,” I said as the doors opened. “Heading home now, goodnight.”

With those words, I didn’t wait for a response and instead walked straight out of the elevator, through the lobby, and into the crowded sidewalks. I could feel him behind me, so I kept my momentum and kept walking until I made it to my car.

As soon as I got home and into the apartment, I called Lindsey and completely spilled my guts about what happened. She listened carefully and quietly as I gave her all the gory details from the club to the jogging to the sex and then finally what I heard in the bathroom today. Lindsey took a deep breath when I was done and thought carefully about her reply.

“We both knew he was a jerk,” she responded. “Zebras don’t change their stripes.”

  “I know, but I just thought…,” I responded.

“You thought what? That some random stranger would magicall
y fall head over heels for you and become your true love? Come on girl, I’ve taught you better than that,” she said honestly. “Look. Forget about him. Use him as a life lesson, and that’s it. In fact, don’t spend another minute thinking about him. Call up that Ryan guy from the club and let a man take you to dinner.”

“You’re right,” I sighed. “I’m acting stupid. I am going to call Ryan.”

“That’s right girl,” she said in a motivating manner.

“And I’m going to let him treat me like a princess,” I continued.

“Get it, girl,” Lindsey said, continuing to empower me.

“I’ll call you later, I have a date to plan,” I said hanging up the phone, feeling powerful and strong.

And that is precisely what I did.

  Chapter Eight

  WILL

It had been weeks since Madison, and I had torn each other’s clothes off and went at it like a couple of teenagers left alone for the first time. I still couldn’t get her beautiful smile and charming sass out of mind, no matter how hard I tried. Jake took me out to another club, I drank more than my fair share of alcohol, and I tried setting my sights only on Benson, but nothing worked. Everywhere I turned I was seeing something that made me think about her.

I’ve tried reaching out to her several times and then visiting on occasion but her attitude has been cold and completely professional. Keeping with that tune, and not wanting to seem like I was chasing after her, I took it as a hint and left her alone especially after I confessed to Tony why I was visiting so much and he told me that he overheard her tell Louise that she was dating some guy named Ryan.

He said she had a coy smile that escaped her lips when she read a text and every time this Ryan guy called for her. Hearing about made me more and more irritated with things knowing that she used me. I knew I didn’t have any right to be acting this way seeing as I didn’t really know her too well and we just slept together once.
