It wasn’t her fault that I was completely and utterly terrified of relationships, but I still couldn’t help but get irritated. As I rode into work, looking at the holiday decorations growing in size, I decided that maybe I should take a chance and ask her to have lunch with me today.
I gave myself a much-needed pep talk while I rode the elevator to the office, my nerves started to bubble up in my stomach. I had it all planned out. It was right before noon, I was going to casually walk up to Madison’s desk and ask her to grab some food with me over at the firehouse kitchen.
Then, when I had gotten her alone and away from all of the guys, I would confront her and find out what’s going on and why she used me. Geez, I sound like a girl.
As I stepped out of the elevator and walked towards the suite where Tony’s office was, I stopped, watching as Madison stood up with her purse giving some guy a peck on the lips.
That was it, from that moment on I needed to completely forget about this girl. I sighed and headed back to the elevators knowing that it wasn’t going to fix the problem. I needed to get me back. However, as the days wore on and I watched Madison jog past the fire station every morning, I lost that cool and calm energy I had acquired just an hour before.
“Madison,” I yelled text day she jogged past. “Can I talk to you for a second, please?”
“Yes?” she said as she stopped jogging, a surprised look on her face.
“Do you think it’s really professional to have your little boyfriend coming in and out at that new job of yours?” I asked the question before I could even think about whether I should or not.
“Excuse me?” Her eyes got big, and her hands flew up to her hips. “What I do on my own time is none of your business. Just like how I wish everyone would stop talking about your harem, because frankly, I am tired of hearing it.”
“Oh yeah?” I said shouting.
“Yeah,” she replied. “What is your problem?”
“Just forget it,” I said, lowering my voice as guilt flooded over me. “Just go home.”
I watched as hurt flew over her face, quickly replaced by anger. She dropped her hands to her side in defeat and started to jog away, completely ignoring the crowd of people walking past her. I looked up as Jake stepped to the side, letting Madison storm past him as he got out of his sports car. He looked over at me with raised eyebrows.
“What was that all about?” Jake said.
“Nothing,” I said walking away. “I just need to get away from the station. Life is getting to me man.”
“You mean Madison is getting to you,” Jake said smirking. “What happened between you two?”
“You know, the normal,” I said throwing my hands up in the air.
“Dude, you banged her and then acted like an ass, didn’t you?” Jake asked, shaking his head. “I just don’t get you, bro.”
“What don’t you get?” I shouted after Jake, stopping him in the doorway.
“You finally find a chick that you really like compared to the women you dated who you had no feelings for. A girl that brings out that fire and passion in you, and you just throw it away before you even got to know her,” he said before heading upstairs.
I sighed, running my hands through my hair. Jake was right. Absolutely one hundred percent on point. I had done what I had done to so many women before but, the difference being, I couldn’t get this girl out of my mind. But now, now I had really done it. I had put the nail in the coffin and might as well throw in the towel because Madison was going to have none of it.
Chapter Nine
MADISON
I walked in the apartment after a nice dinner with Ryan and threw my bag on the chair. It had been several months since Will’s explosion front of the fire station, and though I only see him on occasion as I pass by the fire station on my run and talk to one of his colleagues, Jake, things were still icy cold between us.
After he had blown up on me, I decided to put him out of mind and try to focus on Ryan. He was such a sweet guy and really tried to make me smile every time he had the chance. But, no matter how hard I tried there was still a small part of me that thought about Will.
Halloween had gone off with a bang, and I decided to skip the office party, not wanting to get wasted and flirting with one of the guys from the office. Instead, I invited Ryan to my apartment for the first time ever, and we watched scary movies until I passed out. Everything was going okay, not exceptional, not explosive, but okay and at this point, I was good with that.
I stood up and walked into the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge and taking a swig. As I swallowed my phone began to ring, and I looked down at my watch. It was only ten, so it must be Lindsey. I picked it up and froze as Will’s name flashed across the screen.
“Hello,” I said warily, half expecting to get an angry or drunk Will on the other line.
“Madison, thank God,” he said breathlessly. “I need your help.”
“What’s wrong,” I asked, panic flooding me.
“Benson is sick. I was spending the weekend with him for the first time and he has a 102 fever, and I don’t know what to do,” Will explained in a panic.
“Take him to the hospital, Will,” I said, trying to cut through his panic.
“Can you come over? Please? They don’t exactly give you a manual for the asshole father that gives his son away, and I just don’t know what to do,” Will said, rambling with his nerves. I stopped, running the words asshole father who gives his son away over in my brain.
“Okay, okay. Put Benson in the car and come get me,” I said, thinking about how scared Benson must be. “We will go to the hospital from here. And please stay calm, Benson needs you to be calm.”
“Thank you so much, we’ll be on our way in ten minutes,” he said, hanging up the phone.
After asking my neighbor to watch over Billy, I paced around the apartment while I waited for Will to arrive. Guilt quickly spread over me for the way I had been acting, though his actions were not necessarily warranted either. After about a half an hour I heard a honk outside and grabbed my purse, jogging through the hallway and down the stairs. I ran through the torrential downpour that was happening outside and jumped into the back seat.
Benson was curled up in the back, a soft yellow blanket wrapped around him. He was sleeping at the moment, but just one look at him and you could tell the kid was sick. I smiled comfortingly at Will as we took off toward the hospital trying to show him I was there and present.
When we pulled up, we ran Benson inside, and the nurse took one look at Benson’s pale face and mild response and took us straight back. We stood out in the hall as a team of doctors came in, moving stethoscopes over him, pushing on his toes and fingers, and talking amongst themselves. They took blood, x-rays, and hooked an IV of fluid up to his little arm.
As we waited for the tests to come back, I sat in the chair next to the bed, and Will sat in the bed cradling his son. Benson’s color seemed to be improving with every drop of the IV, which calmed my nerves. It was definitely scary watching an entire team of doctors’ rush into a room and frantically test a child’s response so I can only imagine what Will must have been feeling.
We sat in the room for about an hour, listening to the heart monitors beep, and the nurses’ race by to other rooms. Finally, the doctor came back in and smiled at us as he shut the door behind him. Will laid Benson down and covered him with the blanket.
“Hi, folks, I’m Doctor Torres,” the tall, stout man said as he shook Will’s hand. “It seems he just caught a nasty bug and he was really dehydrated. Kids tend to run higher fevers than adults, but you definitely did the right thing bringing him in.”
“Thank you,” Will said exhaling. “What do we do now?”
“Well, I’m going to have a nurse come in and take out the IV, give him some Tylenol for the fever, and write you a prescription for an antibiotic. Then, you are ready to go back home. Just watch his temperature and come back if it gets to be over 102,
Doctor Torres explained, glancing over at me from time to time as he talked.
By the time the nurses got in there, we had stopped for the prescription and headed to Will’s house, it was the middle of the night. It was still pouring outside, so I helped get Benson in the house and tucked comfortably in his bed. He was exhausted, but his cheeks were rosy red again, and he drank some water before falling back to sleep. Will’s face was rattled, and he walked downstairs and plopped down on his couch. He patted the couch next to him, and I cautiously walked over and sat down.
“Thank you so much for coming,” Will said. “I didn’t want to bother you but his foster parents were out of town so there was no way they would be able to get here in time and I just didn’t know what to do.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” I said reassuringly. “I’m glad I picked up the phone.”
“Me too,” he replied, smiling kindly at me. “I get so scared when anyone gets sick anymore. My mom past away when I was in college from a big storm that hit. Anything that happens to anyone and it has me thinking the worst.”
“I’m sorry about your mom,” I said comfortingly. “I had no idea.”
“I should have told you,” he said, turning toward me. “I should have said a lot of things. I’m sorry for the way I acted, Madison. Ever since my mom died, I’ve stayed at arm's length with all of my relationships. You took me by surprise, and instead of handling it with my heart, I didn’t handle it at all.”
“I appreciate that apology,” I said smiling. “And I’m sorry for being so spiteful.”
“I should have known after that first night in the club you were going to be a handful,” he said laughing.
“Wait, you remembered me this whole time? I was terrified you were going to have an epiphany and get me fired,” I said slapping him on the arm.
He laughed and caught my hand before it hit his shoulder. He loosened his grip and ran his finger over my skin. I knew I should pull away, but I didn’t want to.
“I know you’re seeing someone,” Will began, shyly. “But if I can be honest, I wish it was me.”
“If I can be honest?” I said, looking down at his hand. “I want it to be you.”
Will leaned forward and pressed his lips gently against mine. Fireworks erupted inside of me as his hand grazed my cheek. He reached forward and pulled me by the waist, wrapping me in his arms. I ran my hands down his chest, stopping at each button and undoing it until his wet warm skin was pressed against my hands. He stood me up and walked me up the stairs and to his bedroom. His eyes glimmered in the reflection from the street lights outside, and I could see a different man than the one that had ripped my clothes off before.
Slowly he undressed me, pulling my wet top over my head and kissing my shoulders. He dropped my pants to the floor and slowly slid my panties down, waiting at the bottom for me to step out of them. He stood back up and tossed his shirt on the chair behind him, moving in close and holding my face in his hands as he kissed me seductively. Without thought my fingers trickled over his skin, taking off his pants and running down the sides of his legs. I could feel the goosebumps rise on his arms and his hardened member press against me.
We slowly backed up until I was on the bed, pulling myself up toward the pillows. He climbed toward me, kissing me from foot to head. Carefully he slid himself in, filling me completely. I grabbed on to his hand and gasped as we rhythmically moved in motion with the rain. Our bodies slid over each other, and his hands were tangled in my hair as we swayed in our own passions. He closed his eyes and breathed heavily next to my mouth, the small sounds of pleasure bouncing off my skin. I put my arms up over my head as his hands ran down me, tucking underneath my waist. I arched my back and moved my hips in sync with his thrusts, pushing me closer and closer to the explosion.
As our breathing intensified, and our hearts began to race, I could no longer hold back, and my body shook as I climaxed. I could feel his muscles tense as I let go into a world of ecstasy and he joined me, orgasming in unison to the sound of the storm outside of the window. He pressed his mouth hard against mine moaning as his muscles, one by one, began to release. We laid still for several moments as he ran his fingers through my tangled hair and I rubbed my legs up and down his.
“You’re the girl I want to be with, Madison,” he whispered into my ear. “No more games. No more lies. Just me, you, and Benson, if you’ll have us.”
“Don’t forget Billy.”
“Billy? Are you seeing two men?”
“No, silly. Billy is my son, I’d like to introduce you to him if you’re ready for that.”
“Of course I am.”
My heart fluttered in my chest as he spoke the words I thought I would never hear. I kissed him softly on his lips and ran my fingers down his back, noticing the reaction of his body. I smiled slightly as he was already ready to go, after only a few minutes of rest.
“That sounds like the perfect deal to me,” I replied, rolling him over and sitting up on top of him and sinking myself down on his lap. “Better than any deal you could ever offer.” and the rest was blissful history.
