  Another deep, relaxing breath.

  In… out…

  Slow… steady…

  Let the excess tension go.

She had wanted to check in on Jamison personally before continuing her investigation.

  In…

  Out…

As his only parent, she owed him at least that much. If she should happen to die on this mission, she wouldn’t want to leave him without saying goodbye and telling him again how much she loved him.

  In…

  Out…

Taxis, because they often had to fight their way through snarls of backed-up traffic, were usually a chancy way to travel if you needed to be somewhere on time. They were just too slow.

But getting home faster via the subway wasn’t worth the risk of being assaulted, killed, or captured.

  In…

  Out…

They’re watching this place. Or maybe just watching me.

Whoever this is, they’ve got resources if they can afford to spend them on me.

They knew I might board the subway.

I wonder if they knew where or when.

  In…

  Out…

Have they anticipated my next move?

The sense of impending danger grew greater. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up.

Evaluating the totality of circumstances, she decided to leave the subway system as soon as she could.

  Or try to.

I’m sorry, Jamie. Mommy will see you as soon as she can.

The train shuddered to a sudden stop, and the doors hissed open.

Just then, the man slowly removed his hands from his pockets.

  His fists were clenched.

  Your Opinion

As an indie author, I depend on readers for reviews. Generally speaking, a book with many reviews will sell better than a book with few or no reviews, all else equal. I write as my livelihood, so each review, even if just a few words, means a lot to me.

If you’re willing to write a sentence or two about what you thought of this installment, please leave a review on Amazon. That helps other readers, and it helps me, too. Thank you so much!

A Sneak Peak at the Next Installment…

“This all happened overnight, right?” Beth asked.

Dr. Griswold glared at her with a pair of bleary, stressed-out eyes. “Yes,” he managed to say, barely holding himself together, “that is correct. At least, it was fine when we locked it up yesterday.”

“Was there anyone here while this happened, besides the perpetrator or perpetrators?” she asked.

He shook his head. “No. I don’t know. None of my guys were. I don’t know if any of the government’s guys were. They kept to themselves. None appear to be here now. I’m pretty sure they left for good. There was some kind of rush here yesterday afternoon, in their section of the lab. Outside, we heard them moving stuff out through the service-entrance, yelling, yelling, yelling. Sounded serious, like they were panicked and didn’t have much time. They were loading things onto some big semi-trucks that came by and carried off whatever they had kept in there.”

“Doesn’t that make you suspicious of them?” Rick asked. “It’s like they knew this was coming. They may even have done it themselves.”

The scientist’s eyeballs fluttered behind closed eyelids. “What I know is this: If you start sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong, when it concerns off-the-books government operations, you’ll probably wind up dead. Or worse.”

  About the Author

I grew up on a plot of untamed land in rural Texas in the 1980s. The environment of my childhood instilled in me a great love and respect for the natural world. I recall the hot summers with singing cicadas, the cold winters with sleet and clouds, the smell of juniper trees, and how earth-scents would fill the air right before a rainstorm. I remember the way wind would hint of its secrets and stories, especially when no one else was around (which was often). I am a Native American, and my love for the land is endless.

When I was struck with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in 2017, I could no longer work at my previous job. I refused to get on welfare. I decided instead to write stories for others’ enjoyment, as well as a means of livelihood. Due to my illness, I cannot publish full-length books as quickly as many of the other authors out there, but I do what I can.
