Lucy sat again at the desk, determined to continue with the search. She wouldn’t let him down. For hours, she trawled through websites, gathered notes and made phone calls until she had enough information to start them on the road to Freddy’s identification. But what she needed now were names and dates to uncover Freddy’s family tree and trace possible living relatives. And Freddy hadn’t returned yet, so she was at a temporary standstill.

She ordered room service and made a coffee while she waited. Lying against pillows on the bed, she was finishing her toasted sandwich when Freddy reappeared beside her. She shrieked and threw her hands to her chest.

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to put the wind up ya.’

After her hammering pulse slowed, she was able to find her voice. ‘Perhaps give me some warning next time you decide to pop in out of nowhere?’

‘Right. Warnin’. So, I have to give you warnin’ before I hug ya and warnin’ before I pop in?’

  ‘Yes, please.’

He paced across the floor to the window, fidgeting. His brow was creased when he turned to face her. ‘Sorry about takin’ off as I did.’

Lucy painted a weak smile on her lips. ‘I understand this wouldn’t be easy for you.’

He nodded. ‘I’m grateful for you trying to help me. I am. I wanted to let you know that.’

‘It’s the least I can do.’
