Crushing on Best Friend's Sister: A Bad Boy Romance
Page 10
Wendy didn't say anything about the way I worked. Why would she? It wasn't her life to live and she didn't know what I was looking for. Maybe no one did. Maybe what I was looking for didn't even exist for me.
The smile on my face grew wider when I got outside with the Porsche already running for me. My gram's driver must've known that I was heading out. Sometimes it felt like the help stalked me but I didn't mind. Getting in, I whipped the car around so that I could head down the driveway. I didn't need a woman to make me feel complete. I wanted the touch of a woman to make me feel alive. There was a big difference.
I could only imagine what Wendy was thinking when I walked out the door. There was no doubt in my mind that she wanted me. Every woman wanted me. Some of them were lucky enough to grace my bed for a few hours.
I saw the dock come into view a few minutes later. I parked my car and left the key in the ignition. It wouldn't have bothered me if it got stolen. I had plenty of money to get another one if I wanted to. Money was no problem. It was time to get another car anyways.
“What are you laughing about?” Jill asked me when I reached her.
I found it amusing that anyone would want to take my car. They had no idea what I was capable of when properly motivated.
“I just had a funny thought cross my mind,” I told her, pushing her red bangs out of her face.
She looked amazing in the pale, red, bikini she was wearing. We knew there were no strings attached. It would probably be the only time that she took this adventure with me but just like me, Jill didn't care.
I helped her onto the yacht and just as it was freed to go into the water we sat down at the table before a waiter came over with his white, silk, towel that he had draped over one arm.
“Aren't you hot?” I asked him, sitting back in my chair.
“Sir?” He asked, giving me a confused look.
“Hot. It's supposed to be hot today. You're not hot in that damn suit?” I asked him, appalled he would answer my question with another one.
“No, sir. Would you like something to eat or drink?” He asked, reminding me that he was there for my needs.
“Yes, I would like a bowl of fruits and a bottle of sparkling water.” I answered without hesitation.
I had been thinking about it all morning.
“For the lady?” The waiter asked, turning to Jill this time.
“I will just have a bottle of water.” Jill turned her head, looking out over the water.
That was one thing I couldn't stand about her. She thought she was better than the help. I knew that I was better. I had the money to prove it but I wasn't arrogant like she was.
That's where we clashed. I couldn't be with someone who had their nose in the air all the time. Sometimes it was cute but very rarely had I thought about having a woman that was going to be so stuck on herself. Jill was one of those women.
If things weren't done exactly the way she liked then she would throw a fit. I, on the other hand, would get upset but not make a scene. I would raise my voice and hope that it was done right the second time around.
It was supposed to be a great day. The sun was in the sky beaming down from above. The heat was rising. The only thought that crossed my mind when I saw Jill was one word…sex. She was a good partner. That's why I had asked her to go on this day trip with me. I wanted something from her and I always got what I wanted no matter what it was. It came with the perks of having the dough. Sometimes I would have to work for it but not often. If I had to work too hard, I would just go onto the next one. All of them were hoping they could be with me. They wanted something more than I could give them, but it didn’t stop them from trying.
I blocked out Carter's mother for the most part. She had taken off on us, leaving Carter, to start a modeling career. I wasn't going to let anyone hurt me the way she had. I wasn't going to let anyone walk in and out of Carter's life. I didn't bring any women home in the unspoken fear they wouldn’t stick around.
As I thought about Carter, the smile slowly faded from my face. I was going to make sure that he didn't have to worry about anything. He didn't have to be confused. I refused to allow anyone in his life that might hurt him. He may not have remembered his mother, but I did. The way that she had abandoned him was unforgivable.
“There's something heavy on your mind.” Jill grumbled, seeing that the waiter had brought the fruit basket and the waters.
I hadn't even noticed she was there until she said something. She had been forgotten about in the thoughts that were running through my head. The moment of wanting her was gone. Now, I just wanted to be by myself but it was too late for that. I would have to make the best of it.
“There is.” I nodded, reaching out for the grapes that were hanging on the side of the bowl.
“Want to talk about it?” Jill asked, her hazel eyes softening a bit.
“No.” I scoffed, popping one of the grapes in my mouth and chewing on it thoughtfully.
I was trying to come up with the right words to leave, but I couldn’t be rude. I had a reputation for showing a girl a good time. I just didn’t feel like being sociable.
Chapter 2
Wendy
Carter and I were in the shallow end of the pool outside. It had gotten hotter and Mrs. Caldwell, his great grandmother was in the house getting away from the heat. It’s what Duncan would have been doing right now. He was so smooth and looked to be happy but he didn't say much to me. He hadn't said maybe three words to me since I started working for him.
Mrs. Caldwell interviewed me for the job. I was really nervous at the time, but she made me very comfortable. I loved Mrs. Caldwell. She was very kind. I had fallen in love with Carter when I met him on the very first day of my job.
“Like this?” Carter asked, slowly getting to the edge of the pool. Though we were in the shallow end of the pool, it was still too deep for him. I looked at him, seeing that he was crouched and hanging onto the side of the pool with both hands. I was teaching him how to kick off the side with his feet, to swim on his back and let his feet do the work. He was going to have to kick with his feet to stay afloat.
“You’ve got it.” I laughed as he brought the back of his head into the pool. He was making sure that his face stayed above the water. His brown eyes were shining with happiness as I stood behind him in my blue one-piece swimsuit. I wasn't going to let him go under the water. I could see how much he trusted me when we made eye contact.
“Father is going to be so happy to know that you're giving me swimming lessons. He's been talking about it.” Carter grinned at me. Who in the world calls their dad father? Apparently, Carter did, but I wasn’t sure I approved of the formality.
He had been doing that since I worked for them and still it sounded strange to my ears. I was waiting for the day he would call him daddy. I could only imagine the shock in Duncan’s eyes when he would hear it. It would be a priceless moment.
We tried something new every day. I wanted him to experience things and to go outside of his comfort zone. Learning to swim was important. Even though he was young, he was easy to teach. He was intelligent and a quick learner, but most of all a well-behaved beautiful kid.
“Alright, push off. Now!” I called out to him.
He did as he was told and he began to kick fast and hard. He was doing it! He was swimming on his back though it wasn't in a straight line which would come later. I moved back further, seeing that he had it under control but there in case he found himself in trouble. When I felt the wall of the pool against my back, I could see that he needed a little help to get on his feet without putting his face in the water.
“I did it!” Carter cried out, turning to me.
“Yes, you did, you're a fast learner. I knew you could do it!” I shouted gleefully, clapping my hands.
For a three-year-old, he was well educated. I guess that's what happens when you had a lot of mo
ney. He wasn't even in school yet and he could recite his ABC's and 123's to me. He could read just a little but even for a three-year-old, that was amazing. His shapes were on point as well. No one could ask for a better child than Carter. He did the backstroke most of the day and I knew that his muscles were taking a toll. I knew that he was going to want to keep going.
“Do you want a snack?” I asked, frowning slightly before he looked at me and rolled his eyes
“It should be on the table by now.” Carter grinned at me, knowing full well that I knew the routine.
“Let’s go and check.” I said reaching him and helping him to the ladder.
I let him climb up first and then I got out behind him. Entering the kitchen and going into the dining room, I saw that the table was set. The tablecloth cost more than I could ever afford. I was sure that they just had it lying around. Money made people blind to what they had. There were china plates, silver forks, and soup bowls. There were salad plates and drinking glasses that I would probably cry if one of them was to break.
“Are we having company?” Carter rolled his eyes and sighed.
“Don't sound so sad. I mean it could be fun,” I replied, seeing that the snack was at the kid's table in the corner.
“I don’t think so. I have to wear a suit.” He grumbled, shaking his head again. I covered my mouth with one hand so that he couldn't see I was amused by his reaction.
“It can't be that bad.” I told him.
It was the first time I had seen the table decorated like this. Someone important must have been coming for the dinner. They hadn't had any guests since I started working and I began to wonder if they had anyone of importance in their lives besides each other.
“It’s family from out of town visiting for a bit.” Mrs. Caldwell answered walking into the dining room with a smile on her face. I still wasn't used to her coming in and out. Sometimes she would answer if she heard me and sometimes, I would have to ask a second time.
“That's nice.” I smiled, not hearing anything about family since I arrived. I felt a little silly thinking that they didn't have other family.
“Carter’s snack is ready.” She gave me a warm smile.
“The seafood is prepared and the soup is simmering. Is there anything else?” The chef came in quickly to give Mrs. Caldwell the run down.
“The cake has to be in the oven no later than six if we're going to have it for dessert,” She informed him with a soft touch to his cheek.
“Yes, ma'am the batter is prepared and waiting to be put in.” He grinned.
“You are always one step ahead of me.” Mrs. Caldwell nodded at him, giving him a light smile of her own before he headed out of the dining room.
Carter and I turned to his snack and I could see that he needed it. His juice was in a glass and his fruit in a small dish that had designs around the edges. The family liked eating healthy. I had never heard Carter cry or whine about fruits and vegetables. Sometimes I wondered if he was allowed to even have a small bite of a candy bar.
It was something that I had yet to ask, but just thinking about it made me snicker. Get it? Snicker?
“What's so funny?” Carter asked me, grinning as he popped a strawberry into his mouth and then a few blueberries.
“It’s nothing.” I shook my head and put hands on his shoulders.
“After we eat, do you want to go for a walk?” He suggested.
“You need to get into the tub early today and you should go down for a nap if you're going to attend dinner,” I suggested, knowing I was saying the right words because Mrs. Caldwell didn't say anything to correct me.
She never corrected me when I told him things. It wasn't that I was bossy with him. It was more that I could sit there and talk to a child in a language they understood.
“Fine,” He sighed, shoving a few more blueberries into his mouth.
Before I knew it, the bowl was gone. Mrs. Caldwell didn't comment on how he had eaten. I knew by now he had table manners. I had a feeling that she allowed him to be who he wanted to be. Carter never acted out.
My mind drifted to Duncan, wondering what he was doing. He must be having fun with the woman that he had been talking about. A pang of jealousy went through me. He deserved better than fleeting moments of pleasure. There was no doubt in my mind that he had plenty of women at his beck and call. I secretly wished one of them was me. The thing that I could respect him most about was that he never brought them home.
I had to believe he was shielding his son from getting hurt. It was an admirable quality. I never heard him sneaking a woman in and out of the mansion. I was up early mornings and I was easy to wake up. I was a late sleeper and roamed the halls at odd hours of the day and night.
His love life was none of my business. I wasn't his boss. I wasn't his keeper. I kept thinking about him again and again in various stages of undress. I couldn’t get the image of his body out of my mind. He didn’t mind flaunting his good looks and muscular physique. I had to stop thinking about stupid things. I was there for Carter not to pine for something out of my reach. It was my job to focus on Carter. I just had a healthy fantasy life with Duncan as the main character in every one of them.
