The bullet had only grazed Garth’s side and wasn’t very deep. They had ridden for a half hour before finding a place to hide out. Garth hadn’t lost much blood for it had crusted over, It did, however, need cleaning out and bandaging. He would also need a new shirt. For that matter, all of the boys needed one, and among them, the Wildcats were able to outfit them with something that they could make do with.

They had found themselves a good hiding spot in a grove of trees. So far they had not seen any sign of Peso Martin or his men.

“What do you think, Garth?” Kitty said. “Think You can ride?”

“Sure, it was just a scratch. Nothing to keep me down. What do we do now?”

“You boys can ride and get out of here, now,” Kitty said. “I suggest you get as far away as you can, where Simon Price can’t ever find you again.”

  “What are you gonna do?”

“We’ve still got business with Price to take care of.”

“Well, so have we,” Garth said. “Don’t we fellas?’

“Darn right,” Frankie said. “Besides we owe you,” He glanced from Kitty to Cyclone and the rest.

“You boys don’t owe us a durn thing, but to keep yourselves outta trouble and stay alive,” Cyclone said. “I kinda gotta admit that none of you is worth two hoots and a holler, but you got a way of havin’ got under our skin a mite. So go on and git outta here.”

“You’ve saved our hides twice now,” Frankie said. “And you made me see the error of my ways about that punk Frankie the Kid stuff and I went back to being just plain Francis. But now I want to be Frankie the Kid for real and for the first time. I want to do it right. I want Simon Price to know it too. If you’ll let us, we want to ride with you awhile. At least this one time. Please.”

“You could all get killed,” Kitty said.

“We know that,” Frankie said. “Don’t we, guys?”

  The others all agreed.
