Vanessa didn’t stop kissing him as she unbuttoned his shirt, except once to complain how well-dressed he always was.

“I’ll strive for more nudity in the future, my dear,” he replied.

She pinched him, then pulled his shirt back, and began kissing and nibbling along his neck. He shuddered and moved his hands down to unbutton his pants. In a moment, he was naked, and she stood back, taking him in gratefully.

“Your turn,” he said. “Are you still on the pill?”

Vanessa nodded. She smiled and pulled her shirt over her head. She gave a little swivel of her hips as she unbuttoned her pants and stepped toward him as she let them drop. His eyes raked up and down her form as she stretched, wearing only her bra and panties, teasing him. He gave himself a few strokes to bring his half-hard member to full attention. Vanessa smiled and pressed herself flush against him. He buried his face in her neck as he unfastened her bra and her panties hit the floor.

Several minutes passed as they kissed, each gasp full of need and passion but exercising a restraint to make this moment last. When James finally moved her to the bed, Vanessa felt the throb between her legs demanding his attention. Her back arched almost unconsciously, and he stroked her sides, smiling as he moved his hands down towards that needful throbbing. As he began to massage just above it, gently, Vanessa let out a moan, grateful for the thicker walls in this apartment.

The pleasure rose inside of her. His fingers danced up and down, and when he moved them away, she gasped in protest. But soon his full length was pushing inside her, stretching her, filling her, and she was so excited already that the added pressure was almost too much. As he began to roll his hips back and forth, she grasped up for him with one hand, and he came down to her, murmuring how much he loved her. They moved together, panting and sweating, and then, clenching and crying out. Heat welled up and bloomed, pleasure radiating through Vanessa’s body until she was sated and boneless.

James pulled out, then lay beside her for a moment, breathing heavily and stroking her hair. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I like this bed just fine.”

“Then you won’t mind sleeping here.”

“Not at all.” He kissed her forehead.

James had changed. Again, he’d changed. It was almost imperceptible, but Vanessa could sense it. In their years apart, he’d matured, and in this month apart, something else had shifted. He’d become stronger and more determined. She knew that she had changed, too. First, she’d gradually come to terms with raising Jonah alone, and then she’d realized she could have more and not lose everything. Somehow, they’d managed to grow, and grow together, in a way that made them more determined than ever to never be apart again.

  Epilogue

  Four Years Later

Vanessa could hear James and Jonah playing on the other side of the deck. They had been on the boat for a few hours now, and it was almost time for lunch. The sun shone brightly above them, and the sea air filled her lungs. Just a month ago, that scent might have made her sick, but today she felt ravenous for every sensation her senses could take in. The breeze teased her long hair and the edges of her sundress. She’d never thought she could get used to sailing, but apparently, there wasn’t much she couldn’t get used to.

Over the past few years, Vanessa had spent more of her life traveling than she’d thought possible. While the shop back home blossomed, she and Jonah went with James around Europe, learning and experiencing everything they could, and occasionally going back to New York or Rusteria between trips. She’d put this knowledge to use creating new recipes for the shop, having the time and the mental energy to work creatively in ways she hadn’t been able to do before. It was something she didn’t even know she was missing until she’d finally had the space to explore it. All of this had culminated in an expansion of the shop, and for her, a book.

She was working on another now, but it had taken a bit of a backseat for the time being. Vanessa and James had decided they should be unshackled from their duties for this vacation, and if he could do it, she could as well. Besides, the doctor had essentially ordered her to take it easy, and who was she to complain about that?

One hand moving over her swollen belly, Vanessa went over to the picnic basket she’d prepared for the day and began to set out plates. Even though they had help when they were at the palace, Vanessa still enjoyed cooking, and she enjoyed even more introducing Jonah to new foods as he got older and more adventurous.

“Darling,” James protested. He rushed over from where he and Jonah had been jousting with pool noodles to help her. “You don’t have to do that yourself.”

“I packed it. I can unpack it.”

  Jonah came over. “Lunch! Yes!”

“Yep. Definitely time for some food,” Vanessa said. She took a seat as James took over setting out their meal. “Did you win? Or whatever? I don’t know how you score points by beating each other with foam noodles.”

“You get points by having fun,” Jonah said. “And I won.”

James winked at her and handed her a plate. “He did. He’s absolutely deadly with a noodle.”

“He ought to be. I’ve fed him enough noodles in his life,” Vanessa joked.

James came over and placed both hands on the sides of her round belly. At just over five months, she was beginning to feel like an ever-expanding balloon. He kissed just above her navel.

“How are the girls today?” he asked. “Do they like the sea?”

“She definitely does,” Vanessa pointed to her left side, where one baby girl had been kicking her most of the morning. Then she pointed to the upper right. “She couldn’t care less. She’s sleeping, I think.”

“We get one of each.” James turned back to Jonah, who had taken the initiative to prepare his own plate and his father’s. “Oh, thank you.”

“No big.” Jonah sat and began to dig in.

Their lives were about to change again, in a big way, but Vanessa felt confident that they would be able to handle it. They’d never spent too much time in Rusteria, a few months at most, so being rooted in one place again might not be too bad. Vanessa doubted she would notice much, being busy with the twins, but Jonah could get to know his cousins better, and James was on much better terms with his family.

Vanessa really couldn’t wait to see what came next for them.
