However, she had to consider Andrew.
“Where are you going to take me?” she asked, her voice trembling. “And what are you going to do with me? I am prepared for anything, nothing could be worse than those vermin, but please do not harm my baby!”
“Be at ease, mistress. I said that no harm would come to you and I meant it,” he assured her. “But first, we need to deal with the bandits. Six, you say? All of them drunk? That should not take us long. These people are parasites living off the honest labor of others and I despise them!” He looked as if he could kill for a moment then he laughed sheepishly. “But where are my manners? I am Captain Ewan Mackie, commander of the garrison at Galbraith Castle.”
Hearing the name of another Scottish clan bolstered Isla. Perhaps the Galbraiths have heard of my parents before? she considered. “I am Lady Isla Balfour of the Auchterlinn estate in Aberdeen,” she answered honestly, taking a chance on these men. “My father is Laird Glenn Balfour.” She managed a smile.
At once, the captain’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. He stared at her for a moment and then helped her onto the horse in front of the other knight. Isla had no way of proving it apart from her intuition, but it seemed to her that Captain Mackie’s opinion of her had suddenly changed. She saw him talking to another rider and then he spoke to someone else as well. It looked as though they were passing a message around. None of them looked at her, however, which was even more suspicious. She started to grow nervous again and the thought crept in her mind that these men may still have bad intentions toward her.
If they won’t help me, I must escape as soon as possible.
