Worst Friends Forever… Five years ago…

Camarih and Isis danced their asses off as “Energy” by Drake blared over the club.

The place was live, as the two ladies rapped along with Drake word for word, while moving their svelte frames to the beat. It was their first time in an actual club now that they were of age, and it wasn’t a hole in the wall this time. Grown ass men with real money had been eyeing them and asking for their numbers, buying them drinks, and begging for dances that they found joy in declining. It was a new and euphoric feeling that the alcohol only heightened.

“Shit, I’m gonna go to the bathroom!” Camarih hollered at her best friend, wearing a big smile.

She was twisted, they both were, and she was excited to be out with her homegirl. It was a little getaway for her from her normal life. The only time she was truly happy was with Isis or her man, Driz.

Isis stared at her best friend, cheesing at how beautiful she was when she was happy, that deep dimple sitting in her cheek. She, too, felt good, especially thinking about her man, hoping to see him after.

“Okay, hurry back!” Isis tossed her hair behind her shoulder because she was burning up.

She continued to dance, feeling the liquor flow through her, and making her unusually happy.

“’Sup, boo.” A deep voice blared in her ear from behind, as some long arms encased her body. Knowing it was another thirsty ass man in his late thirties probably, she rolled her eyes.

Isis was two seconds from going off, but when the familiar cologne scent danced up her nose, a wide grin spread across her pretty, delicate face.

“Baby!” She screeched, turning in Prince’s arms to kiss him. “When did you get here?” She admired his handsome looks and cocky smile that both complemented his beautiful singing voice well.

Isis was beyond smitten and wished she could shout her newfound relationship from the rooftops, but he wouldn’t have it.

Prince let her know he was private, and Isis believed anything that came from his mouth. As long as they could spend time together and she got some of that good dick on the regular, she didn’t too much mind being low-key. Plus, she knew down the line he would eventually allow her to tell everyone she knew about them.

“You look good.” Prince complimented Isis, buttering her up just the way she liked.

He smiled down at his sex buddy, reeling her in every second, which unbeknownst to her, was working in his favor. He knew very well how into him Isis was, even though he’d only been fucking her for about six months.

Initially, he liked her; she was very pretty, with a nice body, smile, and good head on her shoulders. However, in his opinion, he’d chosen too soon, because immediately after laying eyes on her best friend, Camarih, Prince felt it in his soul that she was the woman destined to be on his arm.

He had to tread lightly though because if he fucked Isis over before she was inexplicably attached to him, she may ruin his chances with Camarih. He needed to get in her head first, mind control her young ass.

“Thank you. You know you look good too.” Isis blushed like a middle school child.

“Where she go?” Prince asked, sliding his hands down Isis’s back and squeezing her ass.

He made sure to show her attention, while getting to the root of the reason he’d even approached. Had he not seen Camarih with her right now, he would’ve laid low and waited until Isis left so he could leave with one of the other women here.

  “Who?”

Isis laughed off his question, even though she already knew who he was referring to: Camarih.

Ever since he’d seen her a month ago, she was all Prince wanted to talk about, and it hurt Isis. She was too afraid to ask him why he was so curious, in fear of him being honest with her. She was falling head over heels for this man and didn’t want to face the fact that he was more interested in her best friend.

She didn’t even understand why. Yes, Camarih was a pretty girl, but so was she, and had a better personality in her opinion. She was way more outgoing and willing to do whatever to make Prince happy, yet he wanted her innocent and naive best friend. Isis didn’t understand why hood niggas liked girls such as Camarih. Yes, she would drop a bitch in a second, but she was too nice. Hood niggas liked hood bitches, and Camarih wasn’t that. Yet she had Driz on her bumper and now Isis’s man.

“Come here.” Prince let Isis’s body go, taking her hand and leading her off to the side of the club that was calmer.

Isis periodically checked over her shoulder as she was escorted away, making sure Camarih hadn’t returned yet. She didn’t want her to think she’d left her. Most importantly though, she didn’t want Prince meeting Camarih, because she knew, deep down, he would leave her in a heartbeat. The only hope she had was in Camarih’s love for her longtime boyfriend Driz. Camarih wouldn’t dare cheat on him, and Isis knew that.

“What’s up?” Isis asked, tone full of worry.

“I just wanna know where yo’ homegirl went?” Prince reiterated, getting anxious.

He’d never been so obsessed with a female in his life. Camarih was the prettiest one he’d ever seen, to the point where he didn’t even feel confident enough to approach her just yet. He needed Isis to do some of the work so he could easily swoop in and make her his girl.

Prince was a good-looking guy and sang like an angel but lacked any kind of swag or game. Many women his age had no interest in him, so he always looked to younger women who he knew would idolize anything he did. He knew this would all change once he got a recording contract, but even then, he wanted something solid waiting for him at home and for that to be Camarih Marlon.

“She went to the bathroom. Why, Phillip?”

  “Where y’all going after this?”

“Most likely home.” Isis moved closer to him, smirking. “Or I can come to your house.”

  “She ever mention me?”

Isis’s seductive grin immediately dissipated as she stared up into her man’s eyes. Here she was, throwing herself at him, and he was still up Camarih’s ass, someone he didn’t even know.

“You know what, never mind.” Isis started off, but Prince grabbed
her, quickly remembering that she was a huge part of his plan to bag her friend.

“My bad, baby. You know I just like to have information on yo’ people. Bitches be grimy.” Prince gave her his famous half smile.

Isis returned the gesture, even though her gut told her differently.

“Yeah,” was all she could say for the moment. “I have to get back before she realizes I’m gone.”

“Aye, wait. Make sure you come through for the night.”

“Mhm.” Isis attempted to walk off again, not feeling her love interest’s interest in Camarih. It seemed to get worse every time they hung out, and she couldn’t stand it.

Seeing that he’d gone a bit too far and possibly turned Isis off, Prince knew he needed to go into overdrive.

Grabbing Isis’s tiny wrist, he made her look his way before saying, “You know I love you, girl; quit tripping.”

The light beaming from behind Isis’s already light skin made it obvious Prince’s small, devious effort had worked. With those three small words, he’d uplifted her mood and changed her mind about him altogether. Prince saw that, adding a wink as the cherry on top, making Isis blush. Shit like this didn’t work on the women his age, but young, simple, think they’re grown girls fell for it easily.

“I love you too. I will call when I get to your place.” Isis rushed off to meet Camarih in the middle of the dance floor with a flushed face.

“What are you smiling for? And where did you go?” Camarih shouted over the music once she’d spotted her friend.

“Some guy spit a little game to me.” Isis rolled her eyes playfully, and Camarih followed suit.

The two girls stayed at the club for about forty-five minutes more before leaving together. Once Isis was home, she crept inside to get her mom’s car keys.

She drank a couple glasses of water, thinking it would kill off her buzz, and then hurried out before her mother woke up.

Not like she could do anything anyway, because she was extremely sick with lung cancer and due to go into hospice fairly soon. Isis was sad about it, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t feel a sense of relief knowing she no longer had to care for her mama like an infant.

Flooring it to Prince’s apartment in Gardena, she made it there in twenty minutes since it was so late. This was about one of the only times LA traffic wasn’t thick as grits.

Prince was from Calabasa but living in Gardena, and even though Isis was from Watts, they’d met one day at her local liquor store. He was visiting a friend and couldn’t help but to approach the young, pretty girl.

Declining to call Prince once she’d arrived, Isis rushed up to his apartment door, banging on it like the police.

“Hey—Ah!” She hollered when Prince yanked her into the dark apartment, slamming her into the portion of the wall next to the door.

“Why the fuck you ain’t tell me Camarih had a man?” His eyes were dark, and for a moment, Isis didn’t recognize him.

Prince was heated upon finding out through a friend that Camarih was very much taken and by one of the most respected hustlers in Watts. As stated prior, Prince was not the ballsy type, so he surely wasn’t about to step on the toes of someone the likes of Driz.

His friend had already schooled him on how it was nothing for Driz to pull his heat out on a nigga or downright whoop their ass. Prince wasn’t with all that. He was a pretty boy with a pretty ass voice, who wanted to get rich and famous enough for bitches to fall at his feet. He had no interest in being a gangster in real life.

“I thought I—I did!” Isis stammered.

Prince’s reaction to such news was hard to ignore. This wasn’t something she could pretend didn’t exist; it was obvious Camarih was who he wanted.

“Nah, you fucking didn’t!” He stepped back away from her, so angry he wanted to strangle her ass, but he needed her. “And since you didn’t, you gon’ help me get rid of him.”

“What? What the fuck are you talking about? Why do you need to get rid of him? I thought you loved me!”

“I do. I do, baby, but look… She umm…” Prince chuckled, not even able to come up with a lie. “I like her too, and I need you to do this for me.”

Tears immediately filled Isis’s eyes as Prince finally admitted what she never wanted to hear. In her mind, Prince was the man she was going to grow old with. This was not how her love story was supposed to go. Did God hate her? Why would he take the man she loved and give him to Camarih, when Camarih already had a good man? This wasn’t fair.

“I can’t help you.” Isis got ready to leave, but Prince slammed the door back, locking it.

Her not helping him wasn’t an option, and if he had to knock her brain loose to make her see that, then he would.

“Yes you can. This is for us.” Prince had to think quickly.

“Us? How is me helping you get rid of Driz gonna help us? All you’re gonna do is leave me for her!”

“No, baby.” He gripped both sides of Isis’s grown but childlike face, pecking her lips. “When he’s out of the way, I’m gon’ fuck her one time, get her out of my system. But the longer I go without getting some from her, the more I’m gon’ be on her ass. Do this for me, let me get her out of my head, and then I can focus on you.”

Had this been any other man, Isis would’ve slapped fire from him, but this was Prince. She loved him, and despite his actions, she knew he loved her too. Did she really want to start over again?

And no man would amount to Prince; handsome, soon to be famous, and rich? She’d have a better chance at Obama than finding another man like Prince who’d be interested.

“Just once?” She sniffled, looking up into his eyes as he kept her small head locked between his large palms.

“Just once. I’ll be done with her and all about you, baby. And you know I’m gon’ get this record deal soon. It’s gon’ be me and you, balling out of fucking control.” Prince gave her a broad grin, and like always, Isis returned the gesture.

“What all do I have to do?”

“Something very small, I swear. I love you, so I wouldn’t have you too involved. I don’t want anything happening to you.” He laid it on thicker than usual, making Isis feel all warm inside.

She felt even better for agreeing to assist him now. She was sure he loved her and couldn’t wait to be on his arm at all those events when he got popping.

  “I love you too, Phillip.”

  Dooms Day…

Isis was jittery as ever as she paced her bedroom, mulling over the plan for the night. Initially, she was afraid, never having been a part of something like this, but now she felt gangsta. She was doing some wild shit for her man; riding for him like she should have.

A simple smile appeared on her face as she thought back to how happy Prince was when he explained the details to her and two men she’d never met before. All she knew of them was that they’d been paid $1,500 a piece to handle tonight’s events. She didn’t say a word the whole time, only made sure Camarih would come out unscathed. She didn’t even have to do that though, because Prince had already instilled it in the men that Camarih had better not have one scratch or they weren’t getting the remaining 50 percent of their fee.

Prince had gon’ through a lot to find some men who would even agree to murk Driz. Most of the hood niggas he knew through his friend let him know that Driz was off limits. They had too much respect for dude to take him out. Prince had to find some niggas that were foreign to the area, bloodthirsty, and money hungry, which he had.

“Oh shit.” Isis checked the time and saw she was a minute late.

Camarih had already let her know, in passing conversation, that she was going to get tacos with Driz. Isis had alerted her love, Prince, immediately, who’d then passed on the message for his killers to get ready. Isis had long ago supplied Camarih’s address, even describing the surroundings of the unit in the Nickerson Gardens projects she resided in, so they were sure to get the right person.

  Isis: Hey where are you?
<
br />   Cam: On the way home, why?

Isis: Wanted to talk, but it’s fine. I will just come over tomorrow.

Isis smirked, quickly backing out of the conversation to let Prince know her best friend was on the way home.

Prince: Thanks baby and I promise this is gonna be worth it.

  Prince: Delete these texts ASAP.

Prince wanted no evidence of what he had done, not because he could end up in jail, but he didn’t want Isis trying to ruin what he’d soon be building with Camarih. He was sure once she realized he’d played her ass into thinking he just wanted to hit and quit her best friend, she would spill the beans and show proof. But without those messages, she had nothing and would only appear to be a hating ass bitch.

Once this shit was over with, he could act like he never knew Isis’s ass. He’d planned this perfectly so that no one important knew about them, and there was no true evidence of their courtship. He grinned evilly at the thought as he deleted the conversation himself.

Erasing the text thread as directed, Isis fell back onto her bed with a warm smile. So far, the price she had to pay for love had been very small.

  Years later…

“Hello, Miss Coleman, are you ready for dinner?” My nurse entered my hospital room.

I’d just given birth to my son; my son with Prince, and I had to do it alone. Camarih was my only friend, but that shit fizzled, and the father of my child wanted nothing to do with me now that our secret affair had come out.

Prince and I hadn’t been the same since the night I helped with killing Driz. Yeah, he fucked me, and a lot when Camarih moved to Leimert Park, but he still pined over her, watching her from afar and still always asking about her. I was a major key in him keeping tabs on her.
