"Very well," She grinned wide enough to show all of her hideous, pointed teeth and stepped in front of him, blocking the King from my view. "Lady Eden, of the Coven, you are not eligible to wed his Majesty, as you did not win the Devotion Trials."
"What are you talking about?" I spat, my heart began to race. "You were bested, making me the last one standing. Well, sort of standing. Who are you to determine--"
Nija held up a hand to stop me and kept the wicked grin on her face as she lifted the other. My heart sank at the sight of what hung from her hand. The crystal flashed under the sun's beam, the silver chain sparkling as it swayed.
"How did you get that?"
With a sharp finger, she pointed behind me. I spun on my heel, my heart hammering in my chest as I observed Scott, who was advancing from behind. His blue gaze was locked onto mine, his head dropped, somewhat. Nija clutched my shoulder and whirled me around to face her again. Her face was so close to mine that I thought about spitting in it. Another head shake from beside me told me that would be a bad idea. I was at the mercy of the Demon.
"He can explain in further detail if he so chooses." She said, tilting her head. "You see, Eden, deception in the Trials is prohibited. You wore additional protection and, as I'm sure you know, that is against the rules of the game." Her voice was just above a whisper.
"And what of your cheating, Nija?" I snapped and took a step away from her, knowing that if I stayed that close, I would end up finishing what we had started in the colosseum. With a shrug, she twisted around and stepped back to the throne's side, allowing Rowan to look at me. A flash of light shimmered through his pale eyes. Why was he so quiet? "Rowan--King Rowan, that is--please, speak to me. What is she saying, exactly?"
"She has demanded a retrial, Eden. There is nothing I can say against it as the pair of you violated the law." He replied softly, turning around to retreat to his chair. I noticed his hands were tightly balled into fists as he left me standing there like an idiot, with my mouth hanging slightly agape. I glanced between the two, unsure of what was coming next.
"A retrial meaning--" I paused and struggled not to slap Scott across his face as he settled at my side. Rowan's eyes bore into the man like he still wanted to rip him to shreds. I took a step to the side, putting some distance between us. How could he have told Nija? It wasn't even my idea to wear the stupid charm. Traitor. Swine. I wished that Scott possessed Azrael's ability to read thoughts. I was more than prepared to give him a vigorous mental lashing.
"Exactly as it sounds, pretty little thing," One of the massive Demons chimed in, stepping behind Nija and placing his hand on her shoulder. I sized the man up from head to toe. He looked like a male version of Nija but sporting a bit more clothing that happened to be the same color of dark, blood-red. "You will be obligated to, once again, prove your worth to ascend in the Royal food chain. A new set of Trials will begin promptly. This time, with proper precautions set in place."
"Yes," Nija chimed in when he had finished. "Your beloved King has agreed to our terms. In full, this time," She ran a fingernail across Rowan's shoulder, and I swear that I saw him shiver. Sinking onto the arm of the throne, she brought her pouty lips right next to his pointed ear. "Isn't that correct, lover?"
I looked at Rowan with eyes that I'm sure exposed the hurt burning within me at Nija's use of the word.
He was a fucking King, for the love of Pete.
Why didn't he just find a scepter to slam against that pretty little throne of his and put a stop to the Demons and their nonsense? His eyes locked onto mine, and he gave me a twisted grin before looking up at his so-called lover.
"Not all of them, Nija," He said, regaining his tone of authority. "Not all of them."
