  GREAT TEMPLE — Temple to the Seven Gods in Tregallon. Run by one of the seven Gnositos faiths on a yearly rota.

  IRON — Slang for low denomination coinage, typically one and five pennies. Twenty-five Pennies make a Silver Quarter Mark. Four Silver Quarter Marks makes a Mark. Ten Marks makes for a Gold Crown.

  KELTA — One of various European tribes, whose descendants were in Atlantis during Transition to Sanctuary (Celtic to us remaining Earth types).

  MAGUS — Magic user of varying ability. The Citadel allocates every qualified magus to a specific specialisation council, which trains and supervises each member within an assigned guild. Every Citadel guild has their own ranks, traditions and mannerisms.

  MIND LEACH — Slang name for a telepath, or magus with mind-reading abilities.

  PROTEUS STONE — Human magical gem half the size of a man, used as a repository to store vast sorcerous energies. Used successfully to translocate man (and Atlantis) to Sanctuary, but shattered into dozens of shards during The Transition event and scattered between The Citadel and Atlantis.

  ORANGE — Common Atlantean for the acidic saltwater oceans.

  ROKJA — Card game like poker.

  SEA CRAB — Marine nickname for sailors.

  SEA ELF — Reclusive offshoot of the elven people living in the Western Ocean within their undersea city.

  SEA LEACH — Slang name for a sunjammer magus.

  SEA SERPENT — Large serpent-like aquatic creature, 10-60 feet in length. Lacking intelligence, they are ferocious ambush predators. Often act in packs around nests.

  SHEEPSHAGGER — A not uncommon nickname aimed at Kelta tribes folk.

  SKINNY — Rare, but derogatory human nickname for tall elves.

  SUNJAMMER — Specialist magus, trained in gem manipulation to use a sunjammer crystal (typically a ruby) and copper plating to move a medium/large vessel over the ocean. Qualified sunjammer magi develop red eyes within a year of using a vessel's sunjammer crystal.

  THE CITADEL — Monolithic magus tower wrenched free during The Transition to Sanctuary and (mostly) ended up half a world away. Each human state has its own subservient magus enclave. However, all magus specialisation training occurs at the Great Library within The Citadel. The Citadel remains neutral in secular affairs unless provoked, and in effect is a small city-state.

  THE SEVEN — Colloquial term for the seven Gnositos Gods.

  THE TRANSITION — The colloquial term used to describe Penric's relocation spell to move Atlantis between worlds. With significant consequences for Gods, the Proteus Stone, The Citadel and Atlantis. The reason for the partial failure remains a mystery.

  TRAFFLE — Large expanding West Spires sea market town, with a reputation of smuggling to Freeport and Atlantis. Excessive crime, corruption and pilferage commonplace.

  TREGALLON — Capital of West Spires Principality.

  T.S.E. — Ancient Atlantean (terra sancta est) for Land of Sanctuary.

  TUVULA — Underwater sea elf city.

  TUVALA SEA — Northern area of the Western Ocean.

  UNDERLANDS — Alternate Friscian term for hell.

  VEXIN — Capital of East Spires Principality.

  WABLER — Another naval nickname for a marine or foot-soldier.

  Acknowledgments

  Even a plebe has people to thank outside of family, whether it is helpful advice, saying something is utter crap, encouragement, or a fresh pair of eyes.

  What started as a 'what if' concept of fusing Archaeology & History (around 1000BC) with Civilization, AD&D and Warcraft while laid up for a week tripping on pain killers has I hope, blended into an entertaining adventure with the help of various forms of Metal and Scrivener.

  About the Author

  S.D. Howarth is a British fantasy author, living in East Yorkshire with his wife, two children and two ungrateful cats with an endless yearning for food. By day, he works as an IT Manager. By night he writes (and edits) in the attic, finally getting some use out of his degree from UCNW Bangor.

  This is his debut fantasy novel, set within ‘The World of Sanctuary’ with a further two books planned in this series.
