I’d also like to thank all the librarians and teachers who have supported my work—and, of course, my young readers. I love hearing your questions and seeing your enthusiasm, especially for historical fiction and nonfiction (and, of course, the real Rue, Brooklyn, and Beatrix). Remember: History must be seen!

Finally, I’m grateful to my husband, Andy Thomas; my children, Rebekah and Dimitri; and my son-in-law, Eric Sawyer, for bringing me love and joy. I hope my grandson, Oliver, grows up to live in a world in which human beings work to put an end to tyranny and instead come together to solve the daunting challenges facing all living creatures and our planet in the twenty-first century.
