The Closer: A Marriage of Convenience Romantic Comedy

“He needed to see the wonderful person he was leaving behind because of anger. He needed to see his brother’s legacy.”

For the billionth time, my eyes well with tears since seeing Chris. “He begged for my forgiveness,” I tell him.

“And did you give it to him?”

I nod. “Do you think that was the wrong thing to do?” I mean a few sweet apologies don’t change a raging asshole overnight.

Cooper leans up and presses a kiss to my lips. “Life’s too short, Mac. Don’t live it with regrets.”

This man. This stinking man… “I love you,” I tell him. “Even if you’re the reason I’ll never fit into a size two pair of jeans again.”

He chuckles and it jostles Levi on his chest. “Mama?” the sleepy little boy calls out.

“Go back to sleep, baby.” I rub his back, but his little head pops up anyway as he blinks at his daddy. “Did she say yes?”

Cooper smiles, and I’m immediately on edge. “What’s he talking about, Cooper?”

“Just say yes, Mac, so we can all go to bed. My back hurts sitting in this chair.” Pops, who is now awake, aims a glare at me.

“Well, maybe I would if y’all weren’t so damn—dang sneaky tonight. What is going on?”

Levi sits up, seeming wide awake now. “Can I give it to her before she cries?”

Cooper ruffles his hair, and I don’t bother correcting Levi that I’m not about to cry, I’m about to lose my shit. “Yeah, give it to her.”

The little cupid who brought me and his daddy together crawls over to my side of the bed and reaches under my pillow, bringing out…

“Oh, no! No, Cooper. You’ll jinx it.” Now I am crying as Levi opens the black box, revealing a diamond ring.

Cooper slides Jacob up his chest. “McKinley Lexington. I did you a great dishonor by not proposing to you properly six years ago.” He rocks the little boy gently. “I still can’t properly propose, but you know what? You don’t deserve the same proposal everyone else gets. You deserve all your boys piled up in one room, witnessing me asking you to stay married to me forever by sliding the platinum ring—that will never bend or break either—over your finger while you promise me a lifetime.”

Levi takes the ring out of the box, his expression bursting with excitement. “Can I put it on her finger now?”

Cooper’s gaze never leaves mine. “Not yet. Not until she promises me forever.”

Levi’s little groan has me rolling my eyes at Cooper. He stooped really low this time involving the boys. He knew there’d be no way I would say no to that little face.

  “What if we jinx it?”

My husband pulls me closer. “Nothing will ever come between me and my love for my wife—especially superstition.”

Well, when he puts it like that, and my little prince and Pops start clapping, there’s nothing left for me to say except, “All right, Mr. Lexington. You can have my forever.”

A wise man once told me if you want to impress people, tell them of your successes. If you want to impact people, tell them of your failures.

Well, I’m here to tell you my first marriage was an absolute failure. I made mistakes out the wazoo and regretted so much. What I didn’t regret is the experience and the two wonderful little girls that came out of the deal.

But it took me a long time to realize I didn’t have to be the perfect wife or the perfect mother, all I needed to do was learn from the mistakes I made along the way. The Closer was a cleansing story for me to write. I went through the same shame and heartache, but in the end, I found a good man who loved and cherished even the bad qualities in me.

To all my readers who may find themselves in the same position I was, this book is for you. Take solace in knowing you are not a failure. You’re not alone in this journey. Blessings are right on the other side of this pain. Stay strong and believe. Good things are coming your way.

Okay, so now for the hero roll call. In no particular order, these are the people who stood beside me as I wrote this book, deleted this book, cried, laughed, threatened to quit, and encouraged me to tell this story how I wanted. I couldn’t have done it without Jaime, Becky, Sarah P, Sarah S, Aundi, Keri, Melody, Ri, Autumn, Jessica, Amy, Catherine, Rebecca, Stacey, and Letitia. Thank you all for riding this roller coaster with me.

  YOU ARE THE TRUE HEROES.
